The Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds live concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert DVD is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn't attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)'s performance of Rock Star, and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it's back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts' special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots of shots of the enthusiastic, mostly female, 'tween audiences. The sound is adequate, but fails to replicate the live concert experience (the plus side is that your ears won't be ringing for hours after the performance). Hannah Montana's performance includes Rock Star, Life's What You Make It, Just Like You, Nobody's Perfect, and We Got the Party. The Jonas Brothers perform When You Look Me In the Eyes and Year 3000, and then Miley hits the stage with Start All Over, I Got Nerve, I Miss You (which Miley wrote for her Granddad), Going Away, GNO: Girl's Night Out, and The Best of Both Worlds. This concert presentation truly is the "best of both worlds", with easy availability and minimal expense. Better yet is the message that girls can do anything they want if they put their minds and hearts to it. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

  • DumboDumbo | DVD | (11/04/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

Mike & Molly is a love story. It's about two people, ordinary yet extraordinary, who have always protected themselves and relied on their ability to laugh through life. Now, with the help of each other -- and the Overeaters Anonymous meeting where they met -- they are learning to open up and trust one another. But falling in love is no easy task, especially when surrounded by friends and family who are just a little too close -- and a little too opinionated. From the hilarious minds of Two and a Half Men's Mark Roberts and Chuck Lorre, this multi-camera romantic comedy gets down to the nitty gritty of what it means for Mike, an affable police officer, and Molly, a smart and cheerful teacher, to start a relationship amongst all the disruptions and chaos that befall two good-natured people just trying to find a little slice of happiness.

  • Analyze This [1999]Analyze This | DVD | (03/04/2000) from £4.55   |  Saving you £9.44 (207.47%)   |  RRP £13.99

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs, mugging gleefully through Analyze This, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, naturally) suffering from panic attacks who makes a shrink (Crystal, naturally) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series The Sopranos not underscored how thin and formulaic director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in cinemas (and De Niro's biggest film ever)--would seem more fresh. De Niro is definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in Grosse Pointe Blank). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, Analyze This is breezy fun. --David Kronke

The early 1970s saw the development of harder-edged television dramas aimed specifically at teenagers and young adults. One of ATV's contributions to this genre was the edgily subversive The Siege of Golden Hill, a series which powerfully reflects the social concerns that loomed large at the time (and which still resonate today): poverty and the new affluence; the problems of age and youth; education and dead-end jobs; corruption, extortion, violence and vandalism. On the outskirts of a large Midlands city, a teenage gang is on the rampage while a vulnerable old man, Tom, is threatened with eviction from his lifelong home. Nobody wants to help him except his grandson Billy, who is a member of the gang. But what can a disaffected 15-year-old do when he is up against the authorities?SPECIAL FEATURE: the surviving episode of sequel series Golden Hill

  • Billy Joel - The Ultimate CollectionBilly Joel - The Ultimate Collection | DVD | (19/11/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £7.99

The visual companion to his compilation album, The Ultimate Collection provides an exhaustive view of Billy Joel's video output to date. Rather frustratingly compiled with little or no reference to chronology, the collection is still a fine overview of this underrated, US songwriter. His material from the 1970s may be represented by some now-dated visuals (far too many moustaches and skinny ties) but still ranks as some of the best of his career. Be aware, however, that "Leave a Tender Moment Alone", "New York State of Mind" and the classic "Piano Man" are all live versions, with the latter especially replacing the subtlety of the original with a stadium-friendly, slow-motion rock treatment. All was to change in 1983 with the mildly annoying "Uptown Girl": the budgets got bigger as the records sold more, yet the frequent attempts to present the less-than photogenic Joel in a pop-star light are not that successful. Musically, however, he was still able to produce the goods, especially on the likes of "All About Soul", "The River of Dreams" and the infectious "Tell Her About It". And with "Allentown" and "Goodnight Saigon" he proved himself to be a chronicler of blue-collar America more than capable of matching the Springsteens and Mellancamps. On the DVD: Picture and sound quality is excellent, the latter available in PCM stereo or sumptuous Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. Extras include an audio enhanced discography and a biographical timeline, enabling the viewer to pinpoint how Joel made the transition from the decidedly dodgy rock of the Hassles to the elegant AOR of later years.--Phil Udell
