Brian Henson directs his late father's creations in the Charles Dickens classic, the best known (and most oft-filmed) Christmas story of all time. Michael Caine plays the old miser Scrooge with Kermit as his long-suffering but ever-hopeful employee Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Cratchit's wife, and a host of Muppets (including the Great Gonzo as an unlikely Charles Dickens) taking other primary roles in this bright, playful adaptation of the sombre tale. Or at least it starts brightly enough--the anarchic humour soon settles into mirthful memories and a sense of melancholy as the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future take Scrooge on a journey of his lonely, wasted life. Michael Caine makes a wonderful Scrooge, delightfully rediscovering the meaning of life as fantastic creations from Henson's Creature Shop (developed specially for this film) take the reins as the three ghosts. While the odd mix of offbeat humour and sombre drama undercuts the power of Dickens's drama, this kid-friendly retelling makes an excellent family drama that adults and children alike can enjoy. --Sean Axmaker

The 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival was Emerson Lake & Palmer's first proper live concert their only previous gig having been a warm up in Plymouth the previous night. Playing in front of 600 000 people at what remains the biggest festival in rock history they became overnight stars with the press raving about their virtuosity and daring. They would go on from here to become multi-million selling artists but this unique film is there right at the beginning. Directed by Oscar winning film maker Murray Lerner the film intercuts live footage from the performance with brand new interviews with Keith Emerson Greg Lake and Carl Palmer to create a vivid portrait of the birth of a band.
An adaptation of the José Luis Borges short story, Death and the Compass is a baroque murder mystery with a comic touch. Plagued by his involvement in a prior investigation, weary and embittered Police Commissioner Treviranus (played by Cox regular Miguel Sandoval, Straight to Hell, Three Businessmen) attempts to set a peculiar history straight. When his star detective Lonnrot (Peter Boyle), an intuitive, blue-suited Buddhist, is stumped as to the motive behind a series of unsolved psycho-geographical murders with Kabbalistic overtones, Treviranus suspects master criminal Scharlach (Christopher Eccleston), at large in the city. But Lonnrot rejects this thesis and, with the aide of enthusiastic, atheist journalist, Zunz (Chistopher Eccleston), he is lead to believe that the crimes are allied to points on the compass. Drawn fatefully to where he believes a final crime will be committed, Lonnrot and Zunz search for the solution within a mysterious deserted mansion to the South of the city. Shot with a comic book sensibility (like a 1930s movie serial) on richly coloured modernist sets with futurist flourishes, Cox's film looks sumptuous and follows the style of Borges' labryinthine scenario to the letter without losing the plot. The three leads all acquit themselves admirably. Boyle's mystical detective is awkward and aloof in contrast to Sandoval's cunning, career-minded police inspector, while Ecceleston shape-shifts between three roles with alarming ease. On the DVD: An audio commentary by Alex Cox and composer Dan Wool of Pray for Rain (who also scored Cox's Straight to Hell and Three Businessmen) primarily examines the relationship between sound and setting. Paul Miller's "Spiderweb", the featurette advertised on the sleeve and liner notes, does not appear on this disc. --Chris Campion

The gates of Troy are open again after a ten-year siege. The Greek troops appear to have departed the battlefield - their fleet of ships having disappeared over the horizon. Rejoicing at such an unexpected victory the Trojen citizens pour out of their city to take a look at what the Greeks appear to have left behind: a giant wooden horse which they take to be an offering to pallas Athene. The only one among them not to be lulled into the general festive spirit is Cassandra who has seen Hector's ghost wandering the city ramparts with a look of foreboding about him - she senses impending disaster. Nobody pays any heed to her warnings however least of all her suitor Coroebus who tries in vain to soothe her with a tender serenade. In the presence of King Priam and Hecuba his queen the Trojens thank the gods for their safe release. But a shadow is cast over the festivities with the appearance of Hector's widow Andromache and their son Astyanax her silent mourning a memorial to those sacrificed in the long years of fighting.
Filmed at London’s Hammersmith Odeon in early 1982, this concert showcases the late Teddy Pendergrass at the peak of his powers only a short time before the tragic road accident in March 1982 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. The show is a classic Pendergrass blend of energetic soul floor fillers and steamy, sensuous ballads all delivered in his inimitable growling baritone. Having first come to fame with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in the early seventies, Pendergrass went solo in 1976 and enjoyed a string of multi-platinum albums and hit singles, many of which are included here. Teddy Pendergrass died in January 2010 but this DVD serves as a reminder of what a hugely talented singer and performer he was.
