But from such small everyday incidents, Royle Family creators Caroline Aherne and Dave Best (who play young couple Denise and Dave) have crafted one of the most successful shows on British television: a comedy about the joys and frustrations of family life that's warm, honest and very, very funny--Britain's answer to The Simpsons, whose success the show rivalled when it started broadcasting on BBC2 (the programme jumped channels to BBC1 for its second series).The Royle Family marked an on-screen reunion for Brookside-actors Ricky Tomlinson (who plays bearded, big-hearted, banjo-playing Jim Royle) and Sue Johnston as his wife Barbara, the driving force behind the Royle household. It is smart casting because The Royle Family is as much a soap opera as a situation comedy. Now in its third series, The Royle Family has seen its characters develop like real folk. Denise and Dave got married and now have a little sprog; Barbara starts menopause (how many sitcoms are brave enough to use that for laughs?) and Denise's kid brother Anthony shakes off his surly adolescence when he turned 18 in series two. Unlike Oasis, who provide the shows theme song "Halfway Round the World", this programme just keeps getting better.But no soap--not even Brookside in its dafter moments--has one-liners as brilliantly crafted as The Royle Family. (The scripts from the series are available to buy.) Slouched in his armchair, Jim's dour running commentary on the TV shows that are on at the time are particularly priceless: Changing Rooms, for instance, boils down to "a Cockney knocking nails into plywood... Is this what its come to?" Not quite: because as long as the Royle Family are around, there is something worthwhile to watch. --Edward Lawrenson

  The immensely versatile Pete Postlethwaite stars in The Sins, a seven-part serio-comic drama set amongst London's criminal fraternity, with each episode taking as its loose theme one of the seven deadly sins. Postlethwaite, who seems able to shine in anything from Hollywood blockbusters to low-budget Brit flicks, stars as Len Green, an ex-con getaway driver who shocks his friends and family when, on release from a four-year stretch, he denounces his former life of crime in favour of more cultured endeavours. Whilst this decision, and the effects it has on those close to him, forms the story arc, the real meat of the series is to be found in his relationships with his wife (played by the perennially excellent and hugely underrated Geraldine James), his daughters--Faith, Hope, Charity and Chastity--his surrogate son, Carl and, perhaps, most importantly, his uncle and mentor, Irwin (Frank Finlay). Each case of temptation and sin is examined in turn (all handled by different directors but remaining part of a cohesive whole), as Len's rose-tinted view of his family life is gradually shattered by a series of harsh home truths. There's plenty of comedy throughout, much of it stemming from Len's new career as an undertaker, but it takes actors of Postlethwaite, Finlay and James' stature to handle the often abrupt shifts from light to shade as the series progresses into a darker place. Perfectly rounded (no chance of a second series, given the nature of the denouement), the extended format enables Postlethwaite to develop and enhance his character in a way that no two-hour film could ever offer. The producers even had the good taste to include a Tindersticks song as the theme. --Phil Udell

  Frederick Forsyth wrote both the novel and screenplay of The Fourth Protocol, a story about a plot to stage an enormous nuclear accident in England, a catastrophe so large that its source can never be identified but will lead to assumptions that America is behind it. Michael Caine plays an ageing intelligence agent who picks up clues that the ingredients for such an apocalypse are being smuggled piece-by-piece into the UK--but he cannot seem to get his superiors to care. Caine is outstanding in a role that seems tailor-made for him and Pierce Brosnan is very good as the Russian agent working undercover in England to effect the planned tragedy. The film perfectly captures a spreading suspicion and resentment toward superpower adventurism, even though such sentiments are in fact being exploited by the bad guys. Caine, as always, suggests a man walking a narrow line through a gauntlet of moral compromises. --Tom Keogh
