On June 3rd 1989 the Alice Tully Hall at New York's Lincoln Center was the venue for the world premiere performance of Charles Mingus' masterpiece Epitaph. Conductor Gunther Schuller directed 30 musicians in what the New York Times described as One of the most memorable jazz events of the decade. The piece had been discovered after Mingus' death in 1979 and painstakingly restored and copied. Charles Mingus showcases three exceptional concerts performed in April 1964 featuring his most celebrated lineup - Jaki Byard (piano), Dannie Richmond (drums), Johnny Coles (trumpet), Clifford Jordan (tenor sax) and the great Eric Dolphy (alto sax, flute and bass clarinet). Recorded with an eight-day span, less than three months before Dolphy's death, the three concerts showcase Mingus's visionary leadership and the band's incredible depth and diversity with unique performances and arrangements of classics including So Long Eric and the groundbreaking Meditations On Integration.
Charles Mingus was one of the greatest bassists and composers of jazz. His music incorporated many influences including gospel blues classical latin and many styles of jazz. He pioneered melodic bass playing in jazz. Early in his career Mingus wrote in classical notation but by the mid-1950's dictated parts to his musicians verbally or played them on the bass or piano giving them the freedom to express their own musical personality.
