An overlooked classic from an action master! Made by John Woo just before the game-changing A Better Tomorrow, Sunset Warriors was hacked about by the studio and eventually released as Heroes Shed No Tears. For years, Woo's original cut has been a holy grail for action fans. Now finally you can see it for yourself. An explosive story of mercenaries battling drug lords, Sunset Warriors is a war movie such as only John Woo could make. Now restored to the director's original vision, it can stand alongside The Killer and Bullet in the Head as one of his essential films. 88 Films are thrilled to present the UK blu-ray premier of a resurrected masterpiece!
2007's largest grossing film at the Hong Kong box office - the smash-hit Mad Detective - is one of the freshest and most satisfying films from that country in a decade. The traditional Hong Kong police film is turned on its head: the imaginative twist being our hero - Detective Bun (a role created for Lau Ching Wan) - who has the ability to 'see' people's inner personalities or hidden ghosts. Breaking new ground and establishing new cinematic rules, Johnnie To's latest giddily entertaining collaboration with Wai Ka Fai radically raises the level of storytelling in modern film. This ingenious realisation of a supernaturally gifted copper is fast-paced and furious, yet also complex and disturbingly funny.Detective Bun (Lau Ching Wan) was recognised as a talented criminal profiler until he sliced off his right ear to offer as a gift at his chief's farewell party. Branded as 'mad' and discharged from the force, he has lived in seclusion with his beloved wife May (Kelly Lin) ever since. Strangely, Bun has the ability to 'see' a person's inner personality, their subconscious desires, emotions, and mental state. When a missing police gun is linked to several heists and murders, hotshot Inspector Ho (Andy On) calls on the valuable skills of his former mentor Bun to help unlock the killer's identity. However, Bun's unorthodox methods point to a fellow detective and take a schizophrenic turn for the worse...

The Evil Cult (aka "Lord of the Wu Tang") is a wildly and wacky supernatural epic in which Jet Li masquerades as Mo-kei, a weakling warrior orphaned as a child when his parents are killed by two evil Jinx warlords. Chased out of the Wu Tang compound by a leader who considers him a liability, Mo-kei (and his female protectress) find themselves trapped in a dark abyss where they stumble upon a "cooking monk" trapped in a massive boulder who holds the secret to a lost form of Shaolin kung fu. They trick him into teaching Mo-kei the secret of his "solar stance". Newly empowered, Mo-kei sets off to find his maternal grandfather, King of the Gold Lion (de facto leader of the Evil Cult), to rally his clan with the Wu Tang in order to defeat the stifling government forces and exact revenge on the terrible Jinxes. Martial Law's Sammo Hung appears as Chang San Fung, Tai Chi Master of the Wu Tang clan (Hung also choreographed the action sequences for this film). Director Wong Jing (who also helmed the God of Gamblers series, Hard Boiled 2, and Return to a Better Tomorrow) just about keeps a handle on the plot and ably directs the stunning action sequences, some of which occur on battlefields swarming with soldiers. On the DVD: the main feature is presented in letterboxed format with original Cantonese dialogue and English subtitles. The print is generally of good quality but afflicted with blemishes and white flecks throughout. The subtitles are clear but their awkward translation and speed of transition serve at times to make an already convoluted plot harder to understand. It's a shame that an option to listen to a dubbed soundtrack wasn't added as the dubbed theatrical trailer (included here) enhances the daffiness of the movie. Other extras include comprehensive cast and crew filmographies and a small selection of stills. --Chris Campion

Long before South Korea became a pop culture phenomenon the country still possessed a fascinating pool of filmmaking talent and few were more prolific than the late Shin Sang-ok. Creating several genius genre efforts, such as the early K-horror creeper THE SNAKE WOMAN (1969), the director helmed one of his most famous and acclaimed creep-shows with THE GHOST LOVERS (1974). Made in Hong Kong for the Shaw Brothers, this ghoulishly effective supernatural horror classic has a beautiful babe from beyond-the-grave reach out to her beau... but, unfortunately for our feisty femme fatale, the struggles and shocks of a romance that includes outer-body terror and spirited surprises is difficult to contain! Both deceivingly romantic and eerily effective, this five star spine-tingler has been remastered for BluRay by the Asian cinema junkies at 88 Films. THE GHOST LOVERS has returned to British shelves in colourful and creepy HD condition to once again steal your soul!!!
Two decidedly disparate groups the Shaolin and the Wu Tang sects must unite to fight with all their deadly skills for a common cause...
Jet Li can always be relied upon when it comes to action movies, and Meltdown is no exception. No surprises with the story line: Kit Li witnesses his wife blown up in a gangster attack masterminded by the nefarious Doctor, only to be confronted by the same "no risk, no reward" gangster two years later, now aiming to steal the Russian crown jewels from a hotel complex. The shadow of Die Hard falls heavily across the action, with its skyscraper stunts and marauding helicopter, given an appropriate twist by the high-velocity martial-arts sequences and director Wong Jing's stylish take on the high-tech metropolis that is Hong Kong. Jackie Cheung adds a comic element as Frankie Lane, the action-movie star seemingly past his sell-by date, and Kwan Sau Mei's Doctor is the epitome of suave nastiness. On the DVD: Meltdown on disc has a 1.85:1 widescreen picture that reproduces the plethora of monochrome conference rooms and exploding glass panels with dizzying clarity. This release comes ready dubbed into English--don't check the synchronisation too often and you'll hardly notice--with subtitles in 12 languages. The photo gallery is enlivened with Jet Li trivia, while the filmographies are unusually frank about the commercial nature of the Hong Kong film industry in general and Wong Jing's contribution in particular. But done with this degree of panache, films such as Meltdown are never less than 110# entertainment. --Richard Whitehouse

The King Of The Kickboxers (1991): The murder of his brother has left Jake moody and frustrated. Chang a Kung Fu expert becomes the sheriff of a town ruled by bandits. His prime target is to wipe these bandits out. With the help of seven serving prisoners picked from his jail he begins his mission. Will they succeed or will the price of victory be too high?An action packed film filled with drama suspense and humanity. It's certainly one of Bruce Li's greatest starring roles.
Jackie Chan heads an all-star cast in this outrageous crime-caper! Two Hong Kong cops are sent to Tokyo to apprehend an ex-colleague and recover a fortune in stolen diamonds. When one is captured by the Yakuza gang protecting the rogue cop the other enlists the services of his shady orphanage buddies including the irrepressible 'Fastbuck' (Sammo Hung) to help break the case. Not surprisingly all hell breaks loose as the craziest assortment of degenerate misfits ever assembled
Originally made in 1983, Shaolin vs Lama is an example of the kung fu movie at its most cultish. The story is largely unimportant but concerns Yu Ting and his search for a kung fu master, a search that leads him into conflict with the Flying Eagle gang and their leader, Golden Wheel Lama. This is as far as it goes plotwise, not that that really matters. The focus of the film is, of course, the fight sequences and breathtaking they are too, though the whole film is given unmistakable aura of campness by its comical English dubbing. Still, it would be churlish to argue with the glowing recommendation of the Wu Tang Clan's Rza (a man who knows his kung fu stuff) of Shaolin vs Lama as one of the giants of the genre. On the DVD: filmed in a rather basic manner, Shaolin vs Lama is a colourful visual experience but not one that particularly shines on DVD. The 2.0 Dolby Digital sound gives the fight sequences an added bite but, as is so often the case, the potential of the format is frustratingly underused. There is no attempt to provide any sort of background to the film or the kung fu genre in general, instead leaving us with scene selection and the original theatrical trailer. --Phil Udell
