  Chaplin, Sir Richard Attenborough's biographical film of the life and times of the famous comic, is a little thin as a narrative, but it is so charmingly creative and ultimately moving that it's hard to worry about the deficits. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job re-creating Chaplin's graceful slapstick and getting inside the silent-film superstar's head over the years of triumph, defeat, scandal, official persecution, exile and inner peace. A huge cast portray the allies, friends, lovers and enemies in Chaplin's life, including Moira Kelly as his final, long-time wife Oona, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Geraldine Chaplin as Charlie's mother and James Woods as a prosecutor working hard to nail Chaplin for anti-American sentiments. Attenborough declines to tell the story in a flat, linear way, employing such clever techniques as detailing one chapter in Chaplin's life as a silent comedy.   Even though Transformers--Generation 2 was released after Transformers Volume 1, it shouldn’t be confused with Transformers--Volume 2. Got that? Good, because Transformers--Generation 2 is a collection that is best left to the completists and die-hard collectors. There’s no denying that the five episodes here ("More Than Meets the Eye Parts One – Three", "SOS Dinobots" and "Heavy Metal War") are all classics. It’s just unfortunate that the versions on offer are from the later Generation 2 series. See, after the Transformers franchise had all but sunk into obscurity, the toys were relaunched and given a new shot at life as Generation 2. And just as the old toys were given new paint jobs, the old episodes were updated and enhanced by the best technology a relatively low-budget production could buy. What this translates into is lots of annoying computer graphics (called the "Cybernet Space Cube") popping up at random intervals to denote a new scene, or even just a change in camera angle or character perspective. The results would test the limits of even the shortest attention spans. So while Transformers--Generation 2 does collect some of the finest episodes of the Transformers cartoon, telling the origin of the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons and how they came to earth, as well as introducing the popular Dinobots and Constructicons, it’s ultimately a frustrating experience. Fortunately, there are better Transformers DVDs out there. --Robert Burrow

  The BBC, sceptical about the British appetite for extended documentary programmes, edited Ken Burns' epic 17-hour history Jazz back to around 12 hours. That's what's presented in this box set of the series, and while the flow of the original is preserved, so are its idiosyncrasies. The film dwells at length on early jazz, particularly on its origins in New Orleans, and there's a good deal of absorbing history here. On the other hand, in suggesting that the important work of jazz was done by 1975, Burns gives us cause to question how much of his earlier research is awry too. There isn't much here to reflect the brimming vitality of post-1960s jazz, and many listeners and musicians have been enraged by Burns' neglect of such pivotal figures as Joe Zawinul, Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny and Michael Brecker--all players whose work responds vigorously to the question that Burns thinks nobody can answer: "Where are the modern equivalents of Armstrong, Ellington, Parker and Coltrane?" Armstrong and Ellington are the touchstones of Burns' film, providing the narrative thread around which the stories of other major figures turn, among them Bechet, Basie, Goodman, Parker, Miles Davis and Coltrane. Burns also finds populist mileage in the politicisation of jazz, making dramatic capital out of racial divides that most jazz players, black and white, have ignored. The fact is that almost all jazz players, regardless of race, have felt like outsiders. Despite such distractions, Jazz is the longest jazz documentary yet produced, and it's rich in musical examples and classic, rare and unseen footage. Even when working with simple stills, Burns uses seductive camera work and Keith David's epigrammatic narration to maximum effect. There's plenty to enjoy here, but viewers should be aware, as Joshua Redman points out in Musicians' Views in our Ken Burns' Jazz shop, that Burns' film is an often compelling perspective on jazz, not a definitive study. --Mark Gilbert

  A brazen mixture of stand-up comedy, political commentary, CEO confrontations, and shenanigans with Random House tour escorts, Michael Moore's The Big One follows his Midwest book tour to promote Downsize This. One of his Milwaukee tour escorts explains that medium-sized cities in the Midwest tend not to attract tours by the self-important celebrities of the coasts; instead, they attract "more thoughtful authors like Michael". His kind of thoughtfulness evokes both laughter at, and disgust with, corporate America. To be sure, there is a certain naiveté in Moore's pro-worker take on corporate and political America--his half-serious plan for a Nike shoe factory in Flint, Michigan, makes as much business sense as coal mining on Maui--but he gives voice to well-reasoned arguments that would otherwise have been lost amid Clinton-era corporate downsizing and reliance on "temporary" employees. In cities such as Des Moines, Minneapolis, St Louis and Portland, The Big One juxtaposes both Moore's lighthearted-sounding but deeply biting humour when speaking before bookstore patrons, and painful-to-watch confrontations with security personnel at companies such as Procter & Gamble and PayDay. (Future targets of Moore's style of journalism could take note of Nike CEO Phil Knight's fairly effective approach as Moore calls him to task on Nike's Indonesian labour.) Moore speaks clandestinely with Borders employees organising a union; a woman laid off from Ford attends Moore's Rockford, Illinois bookstore visit the same day. Though slow in spots and frustrating, if not depressing, in others, this follow up to Roger and Me is intensely funny most of the time. --Erik Macki
