Pop stars and movies don't normally make the best combinations; despite featuring three musicians trying their hands at the acting game On the Line is a delightful movie. The biggest draw will undoubtedly be Lance Bass and Joey Fatone of US boy band N*SYNC and while many critics may be ready with their pot shots the pair not only bring a surprisingly deft acting ability to the screen but a chemistry clearly borne of years together in a band. The film bravely refuses to play the predictable teen comedy card, opting instead for a more mature tale of romance. On the Line succeeds not only thanks to the performances but because its theme of lost opportunities is a universal one. Certainly not a film without its faults (Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora's cameo is simply dreadful), On the Line has the courage of its convictions and at least tries to do something other than the expected. The result is an enjoyable effort and one that suggests Bass and Fatone may well have a prosperous future ahead of them when that Justin Timberlake fellow inevitably dumps them to go solo. On the DVD: On the Line is certainly a diverting if not startling DVD package. The commentary from director Eric Bross and the excellent Emmanuelle Chriqui is lively and informative. There is a selection of deleted and alternative scenes as well as outtakes. The HBO special is fine, if essentially one long advert for the movie. Unsurprisingly, the film enjoys a high-profile soundtrack (unwisely including the odd N*SYNC tune, rather blurring the edges of credibility) and the audio quality is suitably superb. --Phil Udell

Thanks to ultracrisp Technirama photography of great mountainside and river gorge locations in Colorado, Night Passage is often terrific to look at; you can almost feel the autumn sun and brisk air. This should have been another classic Western pairing James Stewart with director Anthony Mann. But after choosing the locations, cast, and crew, and directing the precredit sequence, Mann abruptly resigned. He found Borden Chase's screenplay an "incoherent" rehash of relationships and setups from their previous films, nor was he encouraged by Stewart's determination to play the accordion and sing. Stewart's an ex-railroad cop who became a pariah by letting a prisoner--Audie Murphy's "The Utica Kid"--escape. The two cross paths again in a ghost town where Dan Duryea, doing a zany version of his loony outlaw from Winchester '73, has holed up with his gang. Replacement director James Neilson, a newcomer destined for bland Disney servitude, fosters a lot of flatfooted standing-around.

With or Without You works as an above-average television drama; but that's about the height of its ambition. It's strange that Michael Winterbottom, director of the hard-edged, bitter Welcome to Sarajevo (1997) and the grandiose snowy western The Claim (2000) should have bothered with anything as routine and undemanding. Perhaps its greatest distinction is that it's set in present-day Belfast without so much as a mention of the Troubles. The plot is a bog-standard romantic triangle. Rosie and Vincent, who have been married five years or so, want a baby, but nothing's happening. It doesn't help that Rosie's older sister has sprogs burgeoning like mushrooms wherever you look. Then up pops a figure from Rosie's past--BenoƮt, her pen-pal from before she met Vincent. And being French, he's naturally charming, witty, romantic and everything poor old Vincent isn't. Think you can guess what's coming? Well, most likely you can--right down to the all-too-pat happy ending. Still, the actors (Christopher Ecclestone, Dervla Kirwan and Yvan Attal are the leads) are accomplished and watchable, the dialogue stays the right side of banal and it's refreshing to see Belfast shown as a civilised, cultured place to live. With or Without You passes an hour and a half pleasantly enough and may even raise the odd chuckle, but it covers well-trodden territory without much new to say. On the DVD: aptly routine stuff--the theatrical trailer, a bland "making of" featurette and some interviews with the three principal players. Widescreen (16:9 anamorphic) and Dolby Surround Sound give the material the best possible showcase. --Philip Kemp
