Please note the reported sound issues are not repeated on the DVD as the correct balance has been applied. The new hauntingly powerful BBC adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's gothic romance novel Jamaica Inn starring Jessica Brown Findlay and Matthew McNulty. From the BAFTA winning director Phillipa Lowthorpe (Call The Midwife) and written by Golden Globe nominated Emma Frost (The White Queen Shameless) comes this exhilarating dramatic adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's classic iconic book Jamaica Inn. Set in 1821 against the forbidding backdrop of windswept Cornish moors the story follows the journey of spirited Mary (Brown Findlay) who is forced to live with her Aunt Patience (Joanne Whalley) after the death of her mother. Mary arrives at the isolated Jamaica Inn to discover her Aunt is a shell of the carefree woman she remembers from her childhood and instead finds a drudge who is firmly under the spell of her domineering husband Joss (Sean Harris). The Inn has no guests - the rooms are locked and kept for storage - but it soon becomes clear that it's a cover as Joss is the leader of a smuggling ring and Jamaica Inn the hub of his free trade. As Mary gets drawn into the dangerous world of smuggling she finds herself attracted to Jem Merlyn (McNulty) Joss's roughly handsome younger brother. But he stands for everything that Mary despises and worse she fears that he's involved in Joss's gang. Mary's morals and loyalties become deeply conflicted. Who can she trust? Can she even trust herself? Seeking guidance Mary visits the parish vicar Francis Davey (Ben Daniels) and his sister Hannah (Shirley Henderson). But can they help her to navigate this dangerous new world and do the right thing or will she lose herself in everybody else's criminality? When Mary finds herself in peril for her own life she is tested to the core and she's forced to find out what she's really made of.

  • The Graduate [1967]The Graduate | DVD | (26/03/2001) from £6.00   |  Saving you £11.99 (199.83%)   |  RRP £17.99

Few films have defined a generation as much as The Graduate did. The alienation, the nonconformity, the intergenerational romance, the blissful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack--they all served to lob a cultural grenade smack into the middle of 1967 America, ultimately making the film the third most profitable up to that time. Seen from a later perspective, its radical chic has dimmed a bit, yet it's still a joy to see Dustin Hoffman's bemused Benjamin and Anne Bancroft's deliciously decadent, sardonic Mrs Robinson. The script by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham is still offbeat and dryly funny and Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for his direction, has just the right, light touch. --Anne Hurley, Amazon.com

  • Blind Date [1987]Blind Date | DVD | (08/03/2004) from £7.94   |  Saving you £-1.95 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Bruce Willis’ first starring vehicle was 1987’s Blind Date, a Blake Edwards comedy in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succession of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basinger, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hot-headed former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis’ evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION BRAND NEW RESTORATION A complete sensation on its original release in 1967, THE GRADUATE was a one-of-a-kind cinematic portrait of America which captured the mood of disaffected youth seething beneath the laid-back exterior of 1960s California. It earned Mike Nichols a Best Director Oscar, introduced the music of Simon & Garfunkel to a wider audience and featured one of the most famous seductions in movie history and a truly iconic final scene. THE GRADUATE also introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman, perfectly cast as the jaw-droppingly naïve Benjamin. Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion as he wonders what to do with his life. He returns to his parents' luxurious Beverly Hills home, where he idles away the summer floating in the pool and brooding in silence. He is rescued from the boredom when he is seduced into a clandestine affair with a middle-aged married friend of his parents, Mrs Robinson (Anne Bancroft). That liaison is soon complicated by Benjamin's infatuation with her college-age daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted, with a witty, endlessly quotable script by Calder Willingham and Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb), with a supporting cast that includes William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Walter Brooke and Elizabeth Wilson, THE GRADUATE had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation.
