Remarkably, the Johnny Mortimer-scripted series Never the Twain ran to over 50 episodes between 1981 and 1984 on ITV. It starred Donald Sinden as Simon Peel, a stuffy, upper-middle class antiques dealer who lives next door to Oliver Smallbridge (Windsor Davies of It Aint Half Hot, Mum fame), a working-class lad made good, also in the antiques trade. As the first series establishes, theirs is a prickly relationship, not just because theyre rivals in trade but also rivals for the affections of the middle-aged, comely Veronica. They are aghast when they discover their respective son and daughter plan to marry, coming on like the Capulets and Montagues of Middle England. Never the Twain is a pleasantly predictable antique of the sitcom variety, redeemed by Sinden and Davies gruff, blustery and persistent antagonism. It depicts a cosy, never-never world of "dirty weekends", huge suburban houses, borderline homophobic mirth and reliable puns on "genes" and "jeans"--the sort of series in which characters greet surprising news by spraying a mouthful of tea halfway across the room. Some will find it barely endurable, others a welcome reminder of a bygone televisual era before alternative comedy became the ubiquitous norm. Progheads who have seen Gentle Giant on a live stage can say that they have witnessed an important part of progressive rock music history. This band mixed all kinds of styles in their music which was certainly unique in the seventies. And still is. Several bands nowadays are influenced by them and try to copy their typical sound. Gentle Giants first official DVD ""Giant On The Box"" is a two hour long DVD and is a perfect addition to any collection. The largest part on this disc is the concert the band gave in a Brussels film studio in 1974. It was broadcasted on German TV as ""Sunday Concert"". Fifty minutes long progheaven. Most important is that it shows how awesome the band played their material live on a stage. A lot different from the way they did it on their records. The musicians invented a lot of extra's tunes which were well integrated. It showed how great the musicians were on their instruments. Instruments which were not that often used in rock music such as violins recorders saxophones vibraphones and cellos. Enjoy their famous percussion extravaganza. All members are involved and it is certainly a visual highlight. Also their playing on the recorders is something we hardly can see nowadays. This DVD also contains some new music written and performed by Kerry Minnear himself. Great stuff that sounds a lot like the band that made history with their unique sound. A sound that always will be remembered as their sound. As an extra bonus DVD features a CD with the soundtrack taken from the ""Sunday Concert"". The whole package is certainly a must for all fans. Most of all those of you who never could see them perform live. This document is a real treasure which brought the golden age of progressive rock music one more time to live. Sometimes dismissed as a pale descendant of a great original, The New Avengers deserves a second look and is perhaps best considered as a largely successful attempt to re-imagine its predecessor for 1970s audiences. Patrick McNee was never the most convincing of action heroes, and the decision to make his John Steed the supervisor and mentor of two younger agents was a sensible one--Steed's virtues are style, wisdom and fortitude rather than physical prowess. Gareth Hunt's Gambit has an unattractively smug side, but has also a louche charm. Joanna Lumley's Purdey is one of the most attractive heroines of genre television, astonishingly leggy and beautiful. Those who only know her later incarnation as Patsy in Absolutely Fabulous will understand now why such a fuss is made over her. The script team overlaps heavily with that of the original series; the new show has the same quirkiness, only occasionally varying it with a rather darker leCarrésque complexity or sudden outbreaks of Hammer Horror. If it lacks some of the sheer style of the original, that is a reflection of its period--the 1970s were less visually imaginative than the 60s. Tightly plotted, imaginatively cast with interesting guest stars, it is only with The Avengers that The New Avengers suffers by comparison. --Roz Kaveney
This jazzy black and white film portrait catches the imaginative energies lyrical and comical of a young Leonard Cohen the quicksilver poet novelist and songwriter. Arguably the first and last post war romantic writer - as the voice of the questing hedonistic pre-feminist sixties.

Stepping into the role of Leslie Charteris' "modern-day Robin Hood" Simon Templar (formerly played in films by smoothies like George Sanders), Roger Moore swiftly struck the right poses, adding a raised eyebrow to the character's established trademarks--a stick figure with halo, a whistled theme (co-composed by Charteris himself) and a quixotic commitment to adventure rather than decency. More clean-cut than the vigilante of the novels, Moore's Templar is a reformed thief (with an accent on reformed) whose adventures invariably involve a beautiful girl in trouble, an exotic locale established by stock shots and pantomime-level barroom sets with revolving fans on the ceiling, and "foreign" villains, played by familiar British character actors in false moustaches. The Saint ran from 1962 to 1969. Connoisseurs reckon the earlier, black and white shows are superior to the later colour seasons. From 1979 to 1980, there was a follow-up, The Return of the Saint, in which sufficiently ironic Ian Ogilvy donned Templar's polo neck, but the format seemed outmoded in comparison with The Sweeney and The Professionals. Volume One contains: "The Talented Husband" in which a playwright is found dead in suspicious circumstances, with guest star Shirley (Goldfinger) Eaton; and "The Latin Touch" which concerns a kidnapping in Rome, with Suzan Farmer and Warren (Alf Garnett) Mitchell. --Kim Newman
