This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it's unlikely that we'll see such forceful narrative in a kids' cartoon ever again. Disney's treatment of Collodi's story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie's success is derived from its liberal use of the kind of imagery no children's film-maker would even attempt to get past the storyboard stage today--a mysterious island where children smoke cigars, get drunk and turn into donkeys, a monstrous, malicious sea-creature which is devoid of any trace of cuddliness and a pair of villains who routinely abduct children, to give just a few examples--the characters are depicted with the finest attention to detail, most of the songs have become classics in their own right ("When You Wish Upon a Star" being only one of many) and the graceful, stylised animation positively glows with fine detail. Essential family viewing. --Roger Thomas
The Outlaw is a fascinating Western with a determindly off-beat story about Doc Holliday Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid coming to conflict over Holliday's stolen horse and the voluptuous halfbreed played by Jane Russell. The script is often disarmingly tongue in cheek and there is a weird eroticism to the film.
After their isolated house is destroyed by a wildfire, John (Paul Higgins) and Karen (Kate Dickie) take refuge in the nearby forest and eke out a feral existence, staying away from the villagers in the valley below. As the couple's backstory unfolds, the reasons for their self-imposed isolation and their deep grief become apparent. When an overly concerned local farmer Andre (Jérôme Kircher) tries to help them, the couple's relationship becomes ever more fragile and unstable leading to a violent and emotional climax. Set Comprises: Montana (1950): The star who brought frontier justice to Dodge City and San Antonio heads for the wide-open spaces of Montana in this adventure saga about a bitter range war. Errol Flynn plays an Australian transplant looking to buy grazing land. But the cattle-raising locals won''t sell to interlopers especially one they consider the most contemptible excuse for a human being ever to cross the Great Plains: a sheep rancher. Flynn''s San Antonio co-star Alexis Smith is a flame-haired beauty with an eye for the newcomer... until she learns his occupation. In time she''ll put aside her disdain for the handsome stranger. So will all the others. Or else. Rocky Mountain (1950): Errol Flynn saddles up for his final Western to play Barstow in a brawny tale directed by William Keighley (co-director of Flynn''s The Adventures of Robin Hood) and filmed wholly in the rugged environs of Gallup New Mexico. Co-star Patrice Wymore became Mrs. Flynn weeks before the film''s release. And drawling character actor Slim Pickens (Blazing Saddles) makes his debut as one of Barstow''s Johnny Rebs. San Antonio (1945): Despite his Tasmanian roots and elegant British diction Flynn made an ideal all-American cowboy. With his steely gaze lean frame and understated humor he tamed the West in eight thrilling sagebrush sagas. San Antonio features blazing action (a ripsnorting saloon gunfight) suspense (a tense showdown in the granddaddy of Texas monuments the Alamo) and a beautiful girl (Alexis Smith as a sultry songbird) to add romantic luster to the heroics. Welcome to San Antonio where excitement is as big as Texas!

The publicity campaign surrounding The Outlaw's release was a masterpiece. Armed with stills of 19-year-old Jane Russell revealing a remarkable dcolletage (while stopping to pick up a pair of milk pails!) Producer/Director Howard Hughes spent tens of thousands of dollars purposely to agitate the censors and arouse public indignation. He released the film independently in San Francisco in 1943 after United Artists refused to distribute it; it was quickly closed down by civic groups.
Jane Russell plays a busty siren who steals the heart of Billy the Kid in this Howard Hughes directed story which centres on the rivalrous tentative friendships between Billy Doc Holiday and Pat Garrett.THIS VERSION CONTAINS EROTIC SCENES BANNED IN 1941.
