  • The Criminal [2001] [2000]The Criminal | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £5.54   |  Saving you £17.44 (683.92%)   |  RRP £19.99

Despite being overshadowed by the welter of inferior, identikit cockney gangster movies, The Criminal is an invigorating and sophisticated crime thriller; deftly handling its theme of conspiracy, tinged with subtle comic moments, yet rife with tension and paranoia. In an assured performance of complexity, Steven Mackintosh plays J, a musician whose chance meeting with a beautiful blonde (Natasha Little in perfect femme-fatale form) brings some adventure in to his uneventful life. When she is brutally murdered, the unsuspecting and confused J is thrust in to a nightmare of corruption and conspiracy, doggedly pursued by two police officers (the superbly foul-mouthed Bernard Hill and Holly Aird) as well as a shadowy criminal elite (watch for a wonderful cameo from comedian Eddie Izzard as a shady informant). A thoroughly impressive debut from director Julian Simpson, the film maintains an uneasy, claustrophobic atmosphere, bolstered by Simpson's ear for decent dialogue (particularly the innovative opening), storytelling prowess and visual flair. Fresh, imaginative and enthralling, The Criminal is a gem waiting to be discovered and a perfect antidote to lazy gangster cash-ins. On The DVD: director Simpson offers an informative and chatty commentary that provides excellent insight into how such a visually stylish film was made so economically. The cast and crew also offer interview soundbites, as well as biographies and a trailer. --Danny Graydon

The Rolling Stones 1978 tour of the USA in support of that year’s “Some Girls” album is considered by fans to be one of their very best. The tour followed immediately on the release of the “Some Girls” album and by the time the band arrived in Texas in mid-July the album had hit the No.1 spot on the US charts. The tour took a “back to basics” approach, with the band and their music very much at the forefront and little or no elaborate staging. Filmed at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on 18 July 1978, this concert is typical of the tour with the Rolling Stones delivering a raw, energetic performance in front of a crowd who are clearly loving the show. Many of the tracks from “Some Girls” are included in the live set with a sprinkling of Stones classics from earlier albums. Originally shot on 16mm film, the footage has been carefully restored and the sound remixed and remastered by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack tapes. This is undeniably the Rolling Stones at the peak of their form. In 1937's Good Morning Boys Will Hay plays the pompous but ill-qualified headmaster of St Michael's, Dr Benjamin Twist, who befuddles his class with meaningless mathematical equations while they set their wits to constructing booby traps for him. However, when his boys pass an inter-schools examination, having seen the French paper in advance, they're invited by the French educational authorities to Paris and become involved in a plot to steal the Mona Lisa. Although it is at times too silly plot-wise even for those with a high endurance for farce, Good Morning, Boys is another fine showcase for Hay to display his well-honed repertoire of tics, double-takes and blathering half-sense. In Hey! Hey! USA!, a 1938 comedy intended to boost Hay's stock in America, he again plays Dr Twist who becomes tutor to millionaire's son Bernie Schulz aboard an Atlantic liner. Predictably the boy knows more about all aspects of history than Hay, having to remind him that Britain lost in the War of Independence against America. "Yes, but we sent our second eleven," Hay reminds him, "And we were playing away." Further capers ensue when two rival gangs attempt to capture the precocious lad, with his parents dispatching Hay to pass on the ransom money. Hey! Hey! USA!has its moments, but despite the presence of old Laurel and Hardy sidekicks Edgar Kennedy (as a dim-witted gangster) and Charlie Hall, this was too leaky a comedic vessel to transport Hay's peculiarly British UK success across the Atlantic. On the DVD: Good Morning Boys and Hey! Hey! USA! are presented on disc well restored from their original 1930s film stock, give or take the odd crackle. There are no extras except scene index. --David Stubbs
