  The eighth season of Friends picks up just moments after Monica and Chandler said "I do". The only thing to have changed (once again) is Mathew Perry's weight, otherwise all is very much business as usual: Phoebe makes Rachel's secret pregnancy more complicated; Ross manages to look totally uncool in front of someone he fancies; Joey will do anything for an acting gig; and Chandler blames his two left feet on a new pair of shoes. All of which was so much fluff to set up the year's primary concern: Rachel's baby. Everyone starts speculating on the identity of the father during "The One With the Red Sweater", which is an incriminating clue from a one-night stand. Meanwhile, David Schwimmer gives one of his best performances from behind the camera, directing himself and Chandler attempting to take fresh wedding photos--at someone else's ceremony! We're not kept in suspense long though. "The One Where Rachel Tells..." teases with the possibility of resurrecting the long-time on/off Ross and Rachel relationship. Naturally that goes pear-shaped thanks to "The One with the Videotape", in which they vainly attempt to determine who came on to whom. Highlights of this volume include the before and after jealousies of Monica and Chandler's honeymoon, Joey's surprise gallantry toward Rachel and the gas leak lie. --Paul Tonks

  Anyone who's watched just about any teenage film such as American Pie knows that the greatest evil in this world isn't chemical warfare, ethnic cleansing, or even the nuclear bomb. The worst crime known to man is in fact virginity and while many of these films have given the topic a bad name, American Pie quietly sweeps in and gives sex some of its dignity back. The plot may be typical, with four high-school friends swearing to "score" before the prom, yet the film rises above the muck with its superior cast, successful and sweet humour and some actually rather retro values about the meaning and importance of sex. The comedic timing hits the mark and lessons are learned in this genuinely funny film, which will probably please the adult crowd even more than it will the teenage one. --Jenny Brown, Amazon.com To the horror of prudes everywhere, American Pie 2 is even funnier than its popular predecessor. You'll either be appalled or surprised by its defiant celebration of the young adult male libido. Females will be equally shocked or delighted, because like American Pie this appealing, character-based comedy puts the women in control while offering a front-row view of horny guys in all their dubious glory. The gags are almost non-stop and director JB Rogers (recovering from his debut debacle Say It Isn't So) handles them with laudable precision, allowing his young cast (particularly Biggs, who epitomises comedic good sportsmanship) to run with lines that most people wouldn't dare utter aloud.   In The Square Peg Norman Wisdom plays one of a pair of council workmen who, while repairing the road outside an army base, come to illustrate the oxymoronic nature of the phrase "military intelligence". Finding themselves drafted, the workmen are sent to repair the roads ahead of the Allied advance through war-torn Europe by the sergeant they previously embarrassed. Norman finds himself behind the German lines, joins up with French Resistance, gets captured then sets out to rescue British prisoners from a German military HQ by impersonating General Schreiber. Of course Wisdom plays Schreiber too. The Square Peg is the film that introduced Norman Wisdom's famous catch-phrase, "Mr. Grimsdale!". Also here Hattie Jacques gets to sing a remarkable duet with Wisdom, and a pre-Goldfinger Honor Blackman provides the love interest. Following his rising star was just what Norman Wisdom's audience had been doing all through the 1950s and, by 1959, and after six films with director John Paddy Carstairs, it was time for a change. Hence Robert Asher made his directorial debut with Follow a Star. The plot is a comedy version of A Star is Born (1954), with Norman yet again playing a dreaming shop worker, this time aspiring to singing stardom. Vernon Carew (played by Wisdom regular Jerry Desmonde) is the fading singer who schemes to use Wisdom's talent to sustain his own rapidly failing career, while the girl is overlooked starlette June Laverick.
