Young Black Stallion: Created as an IMAX movie based on the novel by father/son team Walter and Steven Farley Disney's Young Black Stallion tells the story of a wild colt who befriends a young girl in the Arabian desert eventually becoming her equine soul mate and champion racehorse. Set in 1946 North Africa the story begins as Neera gets separated from her desert caravan by an ambush of soldiers. Alone and lost she discovers a colt among the drifts and in time they forge a friendship of interdependence. The spirited horse and child ride like the wind yet when they arrive home the colt bolts leaving Neera to convince her grandfather that the legendary stallion is more than a mirage. Ultimately she proves this in a climatic action sequence brimming with girl power. The cinematography dazzles with its large-format visuals and sweeping panoramas yet the 50-minute length truncates the story into a seemingly abridged version. An extra hour of plot and character development would have allowed it to venture closer to the magnificence of the original Stallion installment. Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken: The true story of heroine Sonora Webster a determined young rebel who leaves her backwoods home in Georgia and finds work with horses at a travelling stunt show. Her greatest wish is to become a 'diving girl' but a twist of fate threatens to destroy her dream...

  • Desert Heat [1999]Desert Heat | DVD | (20/03/2000) from £10.87   |  Saving you £-4.88 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Versatility, thy name is Van Damme! So Arnold cries in End of Days? Hah! In this relentless revenge actioner, Jean-Claude not only cries, but has a drunk scene, suffers suicidal despair, does a little slapstick, and still manages to flash his ubiquitous butt. Which, of course, is what his legion of fans want to see him kick plenty of (other people's butts, that is; not his own). Van Damme may no longer generate any box-office heat (like 1998's Legionnaire, this bypassed cinemas to go straight to video), but he at least gives his fans what they want. Originally titled Coyote Moon, Desert Heat recalls that guilty pleasure Road House, as Eddie Lomax (Van Damme) comes to the rescue of a gallery of colourful characters terrorised by slobbering, drug-dealing bikers and rednecks in a dilapidated desert town. And this time, it's personal. As one denizen ominously observes, "There's trouble on the hoof and it's coming this way" for the three ill-fated bullies who beat up and shot Eddie and left him for dead. Despite its desert setting, Heat is an oasis for great character actors who pick up Van Damme's considerable slack. They include Danny Trejo (Con Air) as Eddie's Native American friend Johnny Sixtoes, Pat Morita (The Karate Kid), Larry Drake (Darkman), Vincent Schiavelli (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Ghost), Bill Erwin (Candy Stripe Nurses), and luscious Jaime Preslly as Dottie the waitress. The director is credited as Danny Mulroon, a pseudonym for John Avildsen, the Academy Award-winning director of Rocky. His career, too, seems to be on the ropes, but he keeps punching with some welcome eccentric touches. At one point Johnny gives the recuperating Eddie a foot massage (didn't he see Pulp Fiction?). And the script offers such goodies as a lovelorn bus driver (Tom's brother, Jim Hanks) inviting Dottie to see Yojimbo, and one biker's plea for mercy from a local tough: "Jessie, we were in high school together. I signed your yearbook". --Donald Liebenson, Amazon.com

  • Humperdinck: Hansel und GretelHumperdinck: Hansel und Gretel | DVD | (03/12/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

Hailed by Richard Strauss as "a masterpiece of the highest quality", Humperdinck's debut opera Hänsel und Gretel has remained a firm favourite since its 1893 première. The seed was planted when the composer's sister, Adelheid Wette, asked for some songs for a children's play she had adapted from the folk-tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. The resulting opera is filled with high spirits, fairytale fantasy and genial comedy, which in this production is presented against marvellous sets by Maurice--Where the Wild Things Are--Sendak (the witch's cottage is a particularly colourful and elaborate delight).Sent into the woods to gather strawberries by their mother, brother and sister, Hänsel and Gretel are enchanted by the Sandman (Martina Jankova), woken by the Dew Fairy (Milena Jotowa), watched over by angels, and narrowly avoid being turned into gingerbread children. This is an energetic, joyful production. Malin Hartelius makes a delightful, irrepressible Gretel whether dancing, teasing her brother, or outsmarting the witch, who is characterised in classic pantomime form by tenor Volker Vogel. Mezzo-soprano Liliana Nikiteanu makes a good, slightly sulky Hänsel, while Alfred Muff, as the children's father, Peter, is so heartily charismatic as to illuminate every scene in which he appears. This melodic treat is a fine way to introduce Harry Potter-loving children to the pleasures of the opera. On the DVD: the image is an anamorphic 1.77:1 ratio, and given the limitations of filming live opera is generally very good. There is a considerable amount of detail and the various lighting effects are well captured, though a handful of shots are not focused accurately. Sound options are PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS. The stereo mix by default sends the main front image to the rear speakers as a Prologic soundtrack, and so needs to have the effects setting switched out on the amplifier. Rather than being locked accurately to the screen the two multi-channel soundtracks leave the voices sounding as if they are coming from everywhere and nowhere, making the stereo soundtrack the preferred choice. Hearing parts of the orchestra come from behind the stage creates a very unnatural impression. Subtitles are available in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, though the documentary mentioned on the back cover is not on the disc. --Gary S Dalkin
