Richard Basehart Simone Simon George Baker Sid James and Joan Hickson are among the stars of this engaging 'portmanteau' feature that takes a comical look at the usually obscure but oddly complicated lives of a group of film extras. Also featuring pop sensation Dennis Lotis and singer (and future Oliver! Star) Shani Wallis in a very early film role The Extra Day is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. At the end of the final day of filming one of the studio drivers loses the last can of film. The producer orders his assistant Joe Blake to track down all five extras involved in the last scene ensuring they are available the following morning for retakes. Joe knows them all: Steven Marlow ex-Commando officer; Barney West a broken-down prize fighter; Mr and Mrs Bliss now retiring after 40 years in the profession; and Toni Howard a Society girl bored with Society. Visiting each in turn he has a glimpse into their various private lives and fines comedy drama and tragedy. At the height of the stand-up comedy boom of the 1980s, Punchline offered the revelation that many comedians were, in fact, rather psychologically unstable individuals for whom performing was an outlet for hostility and aggression. Wow--who would have guessed? This film focuses on two who meet and forge an unlikely friendship: Tom Hanks plays a caustic, self-destructive comic looking for his big break and Sally Field plays a more Roseanne-like comedian who begins neglecting her husband (John Goodman) and children because she gets such a kick out of performing. The offstage stuff is strictly soap opera, but Hanks and Field both develop solid comedic rhythms once they get behind a microphone. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

They could fuck the human race out of existence!" warns Michael Madsen in this inevitable--and inevitably contrived--sequel to 1995's surprise sci-fi hit. He's referring to a celebrated astronaut (Justin Lazard) infected with alien DNA from his history-making Mars landing, and the half-alien Eve (Natasha Henstridge), who was created from alien-human embryo splicing by biochemist Dr Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) in an effort to discover the alien species' vulnerabilities on Earth. While the astronaut sows his gruesomely wild oats with doomed women (resulting in a bevy of creepy kids in alien cocoons), Eve goes into heat until she and the astronaut can consummate their procreative lust. Sex and death are served up like money-shots in a porno flick, with an emphasis on gory flesh-regeneration, explosive pregnancies and slimy-tentacled intercourse. All of which makes this is the kind of derivative schlock that only a true fan could love, but it's boosted to a tolerable level of entertainment by the returning cast (Madsen, Henstridge and Helgenberger) from the previous film. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
