  • Ocean's Trilogy 4-Disc Box SetOcean's Trilogy 4-Disc Box Set | DVD | (05/11/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £33.99

The Ocean's Trilogy, a brand new four-disc set, brings together Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen in one box, delivering some of the finest old-style caper entertainment seen on the big screen in years. Ocean's Eleven is the best of the trilogy, and also superior to the original Rat Pack film that it's a remake of. Here, we're introduced for the first time to Daniel Ocean (George Clooney, who effortlessly charms his way through all three films with real style) and his group of fellow cons (including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon) as they try and pull off a daring casino heist. It's a thrilling, immaculately packaged slice of Hollywood entertainment, and easily stands up to repeated viewings. The first sequel, Ocean's Twelve, is a mess though. The first half sets things up nicely, introducing further themes of competition and revenge, but it then pulls a blistering stupid plot device around half way through and never recovers. There's still plenty to enjoy, but it's a real missed opportunity. Ocean's Thirteen finds the gang in much finer form though, and the addition of Al Pacino to the roster as the new villain of the piece does it no harm whatsoever. The focus is back onto a single job, and while it's light on twists, it's still a breezy caper that's hard not to warm to. Packed with big name stars, and directed on the whole with real skill by Steven Soderbergh, the Ocean's Trilogy is--the middle film excepted--testament to just how much fun watching movie stars doing their thing can be. A boxset well worth investing in. --Simon Brew

CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITIES... From the hugely talented actor, writer and director Paul Mazursky (The Tempest, Harry and Tonto) comes Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, a classic comedy that hilariously probes the complicated relationship dynamics of the sexually liberated 1960s. Mazursky's sharp satire tells of Bob (Columbo regular Robert Culp) and Carol (Natalie Wood: West Side Story, Brainstorm), an affluent and hip Californian couple who return from a free-thinking, free-love retreat, intent on having an open relationship. The more conservative Ted (Elliot Gould: MASH, The Long Goodbye) and Alice (Dyan Cannon, Heaven Can Wait) enjoy hearing about their friends amorous adventures, but the cat is set amongst the pigeons when they are invited to join-in... in bed! A film that truly evokes the spirit of its age, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice was a huge hit with audiences and critics alike upon its original theatrical release. Benefitting from superb ensemble acting from its main players and a sublime score courtesy of Quincy Jones, it is no wonder that Mazursky s film was nominated for four Academy Awards. Raymond Chandler's cynically idealistic hero of The Long Goodbye, Philip Marlowe, has been played by everyone from Humphrey Bogart to James Garner--but no one gives him the kind of weirdly affect-less spin that Elliott Gould does in this terrific Robert Altman reimagining of Chandler's penultimate novel. Altman recasts Marlowe as an early 70s Los Angeles habitué, who gets involved in a couple of cases at once. The most interesting involves a suicidal writer (Sterling Hayden in a larger-than-life performance) whom Marlowe is supposed to keep away from malevolent New-Ageish guru Henry Gibson. A variety of wonderfully odd characters pop up, played by everyone from model Nina Van Pallandt to director Mark Rydell to ex-baseballer Jim Bouton. And yes, that is Arnold Schwarzenegger (in only his second movie) popping up as (what else?) a muscleman. Listen for the title song: it shows up in the strangest places. --Marshall Fine
