  Clint Eastwood (making his very assured directorial debut) is a poetry-spouting stud-muffin DJ stalked by a maniacally amorous fan after a misguided one-night stand in this enjoyably schlocky, undeniably effective film about good intentions gone murderously wacky. Although many of the very 1970s trappings presented here may ultimately be too dated to be taken seriously (including a highly self-indulgent jazz number and a hilariously gooey seduction number between Eastwood and Donna Mills), the core premise of infatuation taken out of bounds remains uncomfortably plausible--and was influential enough to be appropriated by one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. (Here's a hint--it starred Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and a very unfortunate bunny rabbit.) A well-staged and occasionally very frightening thriller worth watching for Jessica Walter's peerlessly unhinged performance alone. Frequent Eastwood collaborator Don Siegel (director of Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff and The Beguiled, to name but a few) has a nice cameo as Murphy, the moustachioed, chess-playing bartender. --Andrew Wright, Amazon.com

  John Ford's 1948 classic stars John Wayne as a cavalry officer used to doing things a certain way out West at Fort Apache. Along comes a rigid, new commanding officer (Henry Fonda) who insists that everything on his watch be done by the book, including dealings with local Indians. The results are mixed: greater discipline at the fort, but increased hostilities with the natives. Ford deliberately leaves judgements about the wisdom of these changes ambiguous, but he also allows plenty of room in this wonderful film for the fullness of life among the soldiers and their families--community rituals, new romances--to blossom. Fonda, in an unusual role for him, is stern and formal as the new man in charge; Wayne is heroic as the rebellious second; Victor McLaglen provides comic relief; and Ward Bond is a paragon of sturdy and sentimental masculinity.   The final section of the late Krzysztof Kieslowski's acclaimed Three Colours trilogy (preceded by Blue and White) is the least likely of the three to stand alone and indeed benefits from a little familiarity with the first two parts. Nevertheless it's a strong unique piece that reflects upon the ubiquity of images in the modern world and the parallel subjugation of meaningful communication. Irène Jacob plays a fashion model whose lovely face is hugely enlarged on a red banner no one in Geneva Switzerland can possibly miss seeing. Striking up a relationship with an embittered former judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who secretly scans his neighbours' conversations through electronic surveillance Jacob's character becomes an aural witness to the secret lives of those we think we know. Kieslowski cleverly wraps up the trilogy with a device that brings together the principals of all three films. - Tom Keogh

  Time does odd things to some films. In 1966, Morgan--A Suitable Case for Treatment was hailed as a touching black comedy about the destruction of a free spirit by an uncaring bourgeois world. Playwright David Mercer's screenplay is full of his standard obsessions of the time--Trotskyism and RD Laing's perception of the mad as truly sane--and Karel Reisz's direction effectively balances Morgan's failing real-world life with a fantasy life of gorillas, King Kong and sinister partisans emerging from a crisply photographed Battersea Power Station. David Warner's Morgan is far more like his student rebel Hamlet of the same year than the B-Movie villains for which he has been more famous for ever since; it is a sentimentalised performance, but only because of the deep sentimentality of the film. A cast that includes Robert Stephens, Irene Handl and Bernard Bresslaw give us some effective social satire and low comedy. The trouble is that Morgan's pursuit and near-rape of his ex-wife, and his trashing of her society wedding, now look more like the behaviour of a stalker than an act of bohemian rebellion; it is significant that the film treats Vanessa Redgrave as a treacherous bimbo with nothing much to do except smile wistfully. Morgan may have been one of the trendiest films of its Swinging London epoch but it has not aged well. On the DVD: the DVD is presented with Dolby Digital sound that makes the most of John Danworth's jazz score in a 2:1 full frame visual aspect. The clean print makes the most of the mono photography. --Roz Kaveney
