  • Carry On At Your Convenience [1971]Carry On At Your Convenience | DVD | (07/07/2003) from £9.49   |  Saving you £3.50 (36.88%)   |  RRP £12.99

In 1971 when Carry On at Your Convenience hit our screens, the series had long since become part of the fabric of British popular entertainment. Never mind the situation, the characters were essentially the same, film after film. The jokes were all as old as the hills, but nobody cared, they were still funny. But it's just too easy to treat them as a job lot of postcard humour and music hall innuendo. This tale of revolt at a sanitary ware factory--Boggs and Son, what else?--certainly chimed in with the state of the nation in the early 1970s when strikes were called at the drop of a hat. Here, tea urns, demarcation and the company's decision to branch out into bidets all wreak havoc. Kenneth Williams as the company's besieged managing director, Sidney James and Joan Sims give their all as usual, but it's the lesser roles that really add some lustre. Hattie Jacques as Sid's budgerigar-obsessed, sluggish put-upon wife and Renee Houston as a superbly domineering battleaxe with a penchant for strip poker remind us that in the hands of fine actors, even the laziest of caricatures become real human beings. --Piers Ford

TAKE THE PERFECT ROAD TRIP... THEN DOUBLE IT. Back in the day, when Jeremy and Richard embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage from Monza to Monaco in Perfect Road Trip 1, with 20 cars, 2 boats, one motorbike and a dream, they never imagined they'd have to do it a second time, let alone top it. The main aim for their second 'perfect' Road Trip was to not get arrested and banned from driving in France again. Tough challenge. So the boys headed to the sun-drenched Mediterranean, home to the most glorious roads and stunning scenery, where they unleashed all the power they could muster to undertake some truly ridiculous challenges and hilarious stunts; all culminating in a strangely literal car race on the magical island of Capri. Even The Stig makes an appearance to create havoc for the haphazard pair. A Perfect Road Trip wouldn't be complete without some perfect machinery. Here's a selection of cars that feature: the Bugatti Veyron, Pagani Huayra, Lamborghini Aventador Roadster, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Mercedes SLS AMG Black, Jaguar F-Type R, Porsche Cayman S, Model T Ford, Aston Martin Vanquish, Bentley Continental GTC V8, Rolls Royce Phantom coupe, BAC Mono, Lamborghini Huracan, 900bhp hybrid McLaren P1, plus 2 classic 1960s Alfa Romeos and 2 Ford Capris. When you think of Clarkson and Hammond, the word 'perfect' doesn't exactly come to mind. Until now... Perfect escape. Perfect entertainment. The perfect pair in perfect cars on two perfect trips.

  • Carry On Matron [1972]Carry On Matron | DVD | (07/07/2003) from £8.22   |  Saving you £4.77 (58.03%)   |  RRP £12.99

Hattie Jacques finally got to the play the title role in 1972 when Carry On Matron immortalised the character she had developed during several previous outings, most notably in Carry On Doctor. And she seized it with gusto. This is no one-dimensional performance, but a very human portrait of a woman doing her best to retain her authority in the face of mounting chaos--a raid planned by Sid James to steal the hospital's supply of contraceptive pills. Certainly, she's obsessed with regular bowel movements--this wouldn't be a Carry On film otherwise--but she remains a majestic figure of dignity with a touch of human warmth. Occasionally, too, a real hint of irony peeks through the slapstick and the innuendo. Surely scriptwriter Talbot Rothwell had his tongue lodged firmly in his cheek when he gave Barbara Windsor--then married to Ronnie Knight--the line, "I don't fancy being a gangster's moll!" Terry Scott makes a guest appearance and Sid James is at his most conniving and lecherous. Theatre impresario Bill Kenwright has a cameo role and there's an early appearance from Wendy Richard as a prototype Pauline Fowler. But it's the female stalwarts who shine. Joan Sims and Hattie Jacques were truly comic actresses of the highest order. --Piers Ford

James May explores the big ideas from the last century and reveals how they shaped the times we live in now Top Gear presenter James May takes a tour of the 20th century- trying out for himself some of the most surprising and influential technological advances of the past hundred years - looking at advances in aviation warfare and medicine. For example: Jay Kay (Jamiroquai) lends James his replica Lunar Rover to test drive. NASA built four to take to the moon in the 1970s and at $38 million they were the most expensive fleet cars ever built / James has his brain photographed while he's looking at his favourite cars to see how he reacts to pleasure and speed.

DVD Contains: Botswana Special The starting point is a little village on the border between Zimbabwe and Botswana. James was the first to arrive in his 1985 Mercedes 230E. Next up was Jeremy with a 1981 Lancia Beta Coupe. Finally Richard turned up in an Opel Kadet made in 1963 which he immediately bonded with and named Oliver. To reach their destination on the Namibian border the boys had to negotiate the vast openness and primordial sludge of the Makgadikgadi salt pans the choking dust of the Kalahari Desert not to mention the treacherous rivers and hungry wildlife of the Okavango Delta. Along the way they encountered more or less every dangerous animal known to man including hippos elephants and the apparently testicle-crazed honey badger - as well as petrol shortages flying vice-presidents and the Stig's African cousin. Incredibly the cars survived everything Africa could throw at them - including being dismantled crashed drowned and shot. Of course the presenters were well motivated to keep their cars moving: anyone who broke down irreparably would be forced to complete the journey in the spare car - an irritatingly unstoppable Volkswagen Beetle. Vietnam Special: Jeremy Clarkson Richard Hammond and James May go to Vietnam and are told to travel the entire length of the country in just eight days thereby achieving what the American military failed to do in ten years. First they must each buy some suitable transport for the trip but the several million dong they have in their pockets prove to be rather less money than they thought especially in one of the most expensive car markets in the world. Nonetheless the boys are resourceful and with the wheels eventually sorted they set off on one of the most spectacular and incredible road trips Top Gear has ever attempted.

On the DVD: Presented like most of the other Carry On DVD releases in 4:3 picture format and mono soundtrack, this release has all the comfy quality of a lazy Saturday afternoon in front of the television. But where are the extras? It's one thing to launch a highly popular series of films as classic entertainment, but they deserve more than the budget treatment. As always, a cast list, some sort of documentary extra and biographies of at least the key players would really do them justice. --Piers Ford

Don't let the cheesy title put you off, because Jammin' with the Blues Greats, essentially a roadshow headed up by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, is quality stuff, managing to convey all the virtues of the music without sacrificing one ounce of the atmosphere of what must have been an extraordinary gig. It's pretty much impossible to identify any one contributor as outshining the others, given that there are as many takes on the music here as there are practitioners, but it's worth noting Mayall's ongoing commitment to the form as the Bluesbreakers deliver "An Eye for an Eye", "Room to Move" and several other tunes. Buddy Guy and Junior Wells get a couple of numbers ("Messin' with the Kid" is wonderful), BB King gets three and Etta James just one. However, despite everyone getting the opportunity to cut loose on the finale ("CC Rider Jam"), the whole circus is totally upstaged by the 83-year-old Sippie Wallace, who is gently led onstage, leans on the piano and sings "Shorty George" with the kind of conviction that makes everyone else look like upstarts. On the DVD: Jammin' with the Blues Greats is presented in 4:3 aspect ratio and has only one extra feature, a John Mayall discography. --Roger Thomas

Can a combine harvester be turned into a snow plough? What happens if you ski-jump a rocket-powered Mini? Does a Jaguar estate make a good ski lift? This collection sees Jeremy, James and Richard a trio well versed in treading on thin ice answering these vital questions, and more besides. Uniting, for the first time, some of the best Top Gear winter adventures, it's a snowy, slippery celebration of all things sub-zero. When the temperature plummets, the fun begins
