A harsh, cutting, and wickedly funny look into the darker side of show business, Swimming with Sharks tells the story of a naive and eager assistant (Frank Whaley) and his slide into the cut-throat world of Hollywood power struggles. Whaley goes to work for a top movie executive (Kevin Spacey) who almost immediately begins to wear down his new assistant's exuberance with his whining, egomaniacal tantrums and relentless verbal abuse, even as he promises his young charge a chance to move up the ladder. Culminating in a violent and ultimately ironic confrontation between mentor and protégé, this brutal 1994 black comedy benefits from some razor-sharp writing and terrific comic turns from both Whaley (Hoffa) as one whose idealism is irrevocably shattered, and Spacey (Seven, L.A. Confidential), deliciously funny as a caustic, belligerent, and ultimately sad figure. A savage indictment of both the movie business and the price of ambition, Swimming with Sharks is one of the best black comedies in recent years. --Robert Lane
Pop stars and movies don't normally make the best combinations; despite featuring three musicians trying their hands at the acting game On the Line is a delightful movie. The biggest draw will undoubtedly be Lance Bass and Joey Fatone of US boy band N*SYNC and while many critics may be ready with their pot shots the pair not only bring a surprisingly deft acting ability to the screen but a chemistry clearly borne of years together in a band. The film bravely refuses to play the predictable teen comedy card, opting instead for a more mature tale of romance. On the Line succeeds not only thanks to the performances but because its theme of lost opportunities is a universal one. Certainly not a film without its faults (Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora's cameo is simply dreadful), On the Line has the courage of its convictions and at least tries to do something other than the expected. The result is an enjoyable effort and one that suggests Bass and Fatone may well have a prosperous future ahead of them when that Justin Timberlake fellow inevitably dumps them to go solo. On the DVD: On the Line is certainly a diverting if not startling DVD package. The commentary from director Eric Bross and the excellent Emmanuelle Chriqui is lively and informative. There is a selection of deleted and alternative scenes as well as outtakes. The HBO special is fine, if essentially one long advert for the movie. Unsurprisingly, the film enjoys a high-profile soundtrack (unwisely including the odd N*SYNC tune, rather blurring the edges of credibility) and the audio quality is suitably superb. --Phil Udell

Norman Wisdom reprises his best-loved character, the comically inept Pitkin, in 1965's The Early Bird, ably supported once again by Edward Chapman in his final appearance as Mr Grimsdale. This time around Wisdom is the only milkman working for Grimsdale's Dairy, a small business threatened by a menacing large corporation in the shape of Consolidated Dairies and their electric milk floats. Grimsdale and Pitkin must evoke the Dunkirk spirit to save their family firm from the grasp of the faceless giant. Of course, the wafer-thin plot is the merest excuse for a series of calamitous set pieces in which Wisdom wreaks havoc in his trademark bumbling manner. The best bits involve a disastrous game of golf, the usual shenanigans with a fire hose and a virtuoso tour de force opening sequence as the household struggles to wake up in the morning, all set to Ron Goodwin's tongue-in-cheek music score. --Mark Walker In Press for Time Norman Wisdom offered his version of the crusading reporter movie, though by 1966 time was running out for Norman's style of big-screen comedy. Perhaps a sign of his growing frustration with the formulaic nature of his pictures was that he stretched himself to play not just his usual underdog hero, but also his own mother and his grandfather, the Prime Minister. Wisdom also cowrote the movie in which, as a reporter in a small seaside town, he causes chaos for the council, organises a beauty parade and dresses as a suffragette. Though now nearing the end of his years as a movie star, Wisdom shows himself to still be as polished as ever at his own brand of good-natured slapstick. --Gary S Dalkin
