  The first of what would be a series, 1985's American Ninja is a martial-arts thriller. Michael Dudikoff plays Joe, a sullen young GI who turns up at American airbase Fort Sonora and immediately makes himself unpopular. Even when he single-handedly saves the Commanding Officer's daughter (Judie Aronson, whose function is to scream a lot and get her clothes very wet), from a ninja ambush, he's still ostracised. It turns out that Joe is actually a highly skilled ninja warrior, but he's an amnesiac with no idea how he acquired his abilities. Eventually, having bonded with fellow GI Steve James, he helps foil criminal arms-dealer Ortega, whose morals are as dubious as his accent, which veers from French to Hispanic. American Ninja is essentially an excuse for a series of martial arts set pieces, though these seem a little lumbering by the standards later set by Jackie Chan and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The soundtrack and overall feel is clearly influenced by the classic A-Team. The plot is well signposted at every turn and the dialogue makes you think of an American film that has been badly dubbed. However, the film will work as kitsch, for idle comfort-viewing or for small boys.   Broadcast between 1991 and 1997, The Brittas Empire is a sitcom set in Whitbury New Town Leisure Centre. It stars Chris Barrie as Gordon Brittas, the prattish, blazered manager who remains loudly oblivious to the fact that his high-handed efforts at running the place result in utter calamity. As his gin-supping, nervous wreck of a wife observes, he thinks he's the oil that lubricates the machine but in reality he's "a bag of grit". This first series introduces Brittas, whose arrival at the new Centre prompts a rash of resignations as his petty and pedantic managerial methods constantly rebound on him. Mishaps in these episodes include a malfunctioning set of automatic doors, a disastrous wedding in the pool and a lost baby. Somehow, however, Brittas' strange sense of idealism keeps him bobbing up as all others sink into despair. The Brittas Empire could either be seen as a satire on the new tier of superfluous middle-management types who flourished in Tory Britain, or a 90s update of the old stereotype of the bureaucratic buffoon. Compared to, say, Alan Partridge, Brittas seems a bit broad and one-dimensional, a sketch-show character stretched beyond its limits. The rest of the cast don't offer much in the way of resistance or support and Brittas very swiftly becomes very annoying. Despite all problems, however, The Brittas Empire was an immense success, attracting over eight-million viewers at its peak. An attache case filled with fake notes and a radio transmitter is handed over and a furious chase ensues when the kidnapper escape with Elizabeth and Amy ending in a collision with a petrol tanker. The kidnappers' car bursts into flames and plunges into the river apparantly killing Michael's beloved wife and daughter. Sixteen years later Michael and La Salle go to Florence on a business trip. Michael can't resist revisiting the cathedral where he met Elizabeth and it is here that he meets a young Italian woman called Sandra who bears a striking resemblance to his late wife. Sandra (also played by Genevieve Bujold) and Michael fall in love and return to the States and Sandra develops a fascination for Elizabeth even wearing her jewellry and styling her hair in the same way. However Michael's new found happiness is short-lived. During their wedding night Sandra disappears and Michael awakes to find a ransom note.... The haunting music was scored by Bernard Hermann and was nominated for an Oscar for 'Best Original Score' in 1977. Hermann also composed the music for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo which inspired De Palma to write Obsession.
