When Harry (Anthony Edwards, Zodiac, ER) meets Julie (Mare Winningham, Turner & Hooch) at the La Brea Tar Pits, it s love at first sight. But when Harry s alarm clock fails to go off, he misses their scheduled date by several hours. Alone on a street corner at four in the morning, he answers a ringing pay phone and picks up a garbled message that all-out nuclear war is set to begin in an hour s time. With the clock ticking and the city spiralling into chaos, can Harry somehow track down Julie and get them both to safety before Armageddon? In 1983, American Film magazine called Miracle Mile one of the ten best unproduced screenplays, though Hollywood baulked at its idiosyncratic mix of black comedy, romance and nuclear holocaust. Years later, writer Steve De Jarnatt (Cherry 2000) bought back the rights to his own script and in 1988 made the film on his own terms. • Desert Fox, The / The Desert Rats [1951]Desert Fox, The / The Desert Rats | DVD | (02/06/2003) from £14.35   |  Saving you £0.64 (4.46%)   |  RRP £14.99

James Mason plays Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in both The Desert Fox (1951) and The Desert Rats (1953), a WWII double-bill on DVD. The Desert Fox, released six years after the end of the War, is a solemnly respectful tribute to Erwin Rommel, Germany's most celebrated military genius. James Mason's portrayal of this gallant warrior became a highlight of his career iconography. The film itself is oddly disjointed, though: a pre-credit commando raid to liquidate Rommel is followed by a flashback to the field-marshal's lightning successes commanding the Afrika Korps--a compressed account via documentary footage and copious narration (spoken by Michael Rennie, who also dubs Desmond Young, the Rommel biographer and one-time British POW appearing briefly as himself). The dramatic core is Rommel's growing disenchantment with Hitler (Luther Adler), his involvement in the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer, and his subsequent martyrdom. The Desert Rats stars Richard Burton in only his second Hollywood role (between Oscar-nominated turns in My Cousin Rachel and The Robe), as a Scottish commando put in charge of a battalion of the 9th Australian Division defending Tobruk. The Aussies don't like him, and with a year of grim North African duty already under his belt, he's not too crazy about his new responsibilities either. The outfit is charged with staving off the battering assaults of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel for two months, to give the British Army time to regroup in Cairo and prepare for a counterattack. In the end, the "desert rats" play hell with the Desert Fox for 242 days, during which time they and their commander develop some mutual respect. This is a solid, workmanlike World War II picture that, having been made in 1953 rather than 1943, can acknowledge a degree of eccentric humanity and soldierly professionalism in the enemy. Featured guest star James Mason reprises his Rommel from The Desert Fox, playing all his scenes in German except for a scene of ironical repartee with Burton. Another distinguished Brit, Robert Newton, gets costar billing as a boozy, self-confessed coward who used to be Burton's schoolmaster. However, a goodly number of Australians--including Chips Rafferty and Charles "Bud" Tingwell rate at least as much screen time. Robert Wise directed, with a trimness that reminds us he started out as an editor, and the pungent black-and-white cinematography is by Lucien Ballard. --Richard T. Jameson

  • Immortals [Blu-ray]Immortals | Blu Ray | (05/03/2012) from £9.86   |  Saving you £15.13 (153.45%)   |  RRP £24.99

Director Tarsem Singh never, ever, shortchanges you on his visuals. Presented in razor-sharp 1080p, and in 3D too, Immortals is a busy, dramatic and sparkling home cinema demonstration. It hardly skimps on the action, either. Said action kicks off as Mickey Rourke’s King Hyperion amasses an army, with the intention of waging war on humankind. This he does quite successfully, until the small matter of Henry Cavill’s Theseus interjects. It turns out that Theseus has been chosen by Zeus to do battle with Hyperion, and that’s pretty much all you need to know, before settling down to a couple of hours of medieval fantasy battling. Anyone familiar with 300 will know the score here. Story isn’t Immortals’ strength, instead giving way to wave after wave of blockbuster carnage. There’s some terrific CG work at play here, too, that makes good use of 3D. And rarely isn’t something of note happening on the screen. The extra features are good, with the Blu-ray boasting a pair of alternative endings, along with a different opening too. The ones chosen for the final cut edge them out, but it’s interesting to see what else was considered. There’s some more traditional deleted material, too, and some welcome insights courtesy of the behind the scenes footage. It all rounds off a strong package, for a relentlessly entertaining film, warts and all. --Jon Foster

The Charge of the Light Brigade was an infamous battle in the Crimean War considered one of the greatest military blunders in history and immortalized in the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The ill-conceived expedition to the Crimea was marked by an incredible lack of strategy and planning inadequate weapons camouflage food health care and communications. In the final battle all the soldiers had to protect them was their courage and blind faith. As Tennyson put it: Ours is not to question why/Ours is but to do and die. The film is a classic dissection of the pointlessness of war and the horrors inflicted on the common man who goes to fight in the name of his country. Directed by Tony Richardson and starring Trevor Howard Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement Howards End) and John Gielgud (Murder on the Orient Express Arthur The Charge of the Light Brigade was nominated for 6 BAFTAs.
