  Set around a London bus depot, On the Buses starred Reg Varney as Stan, an ageing bachelor and driver of the No.11 bus who still lives with his Mum (Doris Hare), his plain sister Olive (Anna Karen) and disgruntled brother-in-law Arthur (Michael Robbins). At work, he fraternises with the laddish and lecherous Jack (Bob Grant), with whom he pursues innumerable (and improbable) giggly, mini-skirted "clippies" (conductors) and cheeks the beady-eyed and punctilious bus inspector, Blakey (Steven Lewis) Despite its immense popularity, On the Buses hasn't dated well. Like the buses themselves, the jokes don't arrive very often and when they do, they're visible a long way off. The studio audience whoops cathartically at anything remotely alluding to sex--even a bared male nipple--making you wonder at the repressed nature of British society in 1969. In later decades it would come to be treasured as somewhat creaky kitsch by audiences nostalgic for an age of politically incorrect innocence. On the DVD: On the Buses has no extra features here. The original black and white versions have scrubbed up reasonably well, although defects such as fading sound and poor dubbing have proven beyond amendment. --David Stubbs

When a scheming mission controller (Hal Holbrook) plots to kill the astronauts in a staged capsule fire, the trio embarks on a dangerous mission to expose the truth. Elliott Gould costars as the journalist determined to crack the conspiracy, and director Peter Hyams turns up the tension with an exciting chase sequence involving Telly Savalas as an eccentric barnstormer who comes to Gould's aid in his attempt rescue the hoax mission's sole survivor. --Jeff Shannon

  Mutant X takes the useful SF trope of the mutant minority persecuted by the state and adds potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 2 contains the following episodes: "The Meaning of Death". A plague that kills mutants forces Adam to work with Mason Eckhart and the invulnerable mercenary Marlowe in the knowledge that any cure he comes up with will lead to a double-cross. "Lit Fuse". Brennan is attracted to energy-absorbing Ashley, who is being set up for betrayal by bounty-hunter Cross. When she absorbs Brennan, things get really complicated. "In the Presence of Mine Enemies". Jesse's hacker girlfriend Toni is forced by Eckhart to betray Adam's hideout Sanctuary and the computerised journalist Proxy Blue. Can the tables be turned? "Crime of the New Century". Youthful mutant firestarter Joshua is kidnapped, rescued and then turned over to the GSA by a renegade FBI agent. "Dark Star Rising". The survivors of a commando team have been altered into mutancy by scientists and want vengeance for their dead squad members. Mutant X helps them stop Eckhart getting the secret serum.   Sex so hot, it's deadly", announces the tagline for Sexual Malice. Originally screened in 1994, this is a quintessential late-night TV movie. The well-worn plot concerns relationships inside and outside of marriage, with a twist obvious enough for the non-rocket scientists among us to have twigged well before the denouement. As for the sex scenes--there's little here that errs on the outré side of Dirty Dancing (interestingly enough, there's a secondary role for one Don Swayze), and the visuals are stylishly, almost tastefully done--Ashley Irwin's coffee-table funk adding the right musical enhancement. As the upwardly mobile accountant Christine Chandler, Diane Barton gives a creditable portrayal of a woman caught between the routine of marriage to the predictable Richard (stolidly dependable Edward Albert) and the excitement of an illicit affair with the passably seductive Quinn, played with a certain edge by Doug Jeffrey. The two subplots are wafer thin in narrative terms, but those who enjoy bump-and-grind under piers and in changing rooms will certainly stay the course. On the DVD: Sexual Malice comes to DVD in a 4:3 full frame print that's nonetheless a classy looking effort, and the stereo soundtrack is similarly pristine. There are detailed filmographies, a well-reproduced but oddly random photo gallery, and a trailer that manages to summarise a completely different scenario. As its closing voice-over proclaims, "Caught between a boring husband and a dangerous lover, a passionate woman can commit just about anything". Now you know.--Richard Whitehouse
