  • Hoffman [1969]Hoffman | DVD | (08/07/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Hoffman is an odd cross between There's a Girl in My Soup and The Collector and is clearly one of the few film projects Peter Sellers took seriously enough to work hard on, rather than one of the many he breezed through on a talent for funny voices and unleashed chaos. The set-up is that secretary Miss Smith (Sinead Cusack) is blackmailed by meek, middle-aged Mr Hoffman (Sellers) into spending a week of domesticity with him in his flat, while she tells her fiance (Jeremy "Boba Fett" Bulloch) that she's with her gran in Scarborough. At first, the tone is creepy as Cusack dreads the terrors of sharing a bed with Sellers and he mutters darkly about an absent wife in terms that recall Crippen and the brides-in-the-bath murderer, but it becomes more poignant as both characters learn to see each other as people. The worst Sellers does in bed is snore loudly, while the unattainably glamorous young woman suffers from minor ailments like a bruised heel and night-time constipation, and the at-first simple relationship between them deepens as the girl comes to understand the half-life Hoffman has been leading. The script gives Sellers a lot of funny business, acid lines and whimsical turns, but he plays Hoffman as a repressed soul half-ashamed of his attempts to be funny, telling genuinely good jokes as if he expects no one will laugh. Cusack, more interesting than the expected dolly bird, keeps up with her co-star, and almost makes the strangely upbeat last reel believable. On the DVD: Hoffman comes to disc in a nice widescreen print. Otherwise, nada. The film is also available as part of the four-disc Peter Sellers Collection.--Kim Newman

  • The Perfect Storm [2000]The Perfect Storm | DVD | (25/11/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £20.99

In October 1991 the fishing community of Gloucester Massachusetts experienced the full wrath of Mother Nature when a freak meteorological event produced the fiercest storm in modern history. Director Wolfgang Petersen has fashioned this heroic true story (as chronicled in Sebastian Junger's bestseller) into a star-laden blockbuster employing computer power to whip up the terrifying titular storm. George Clooney plays Billy Tyne captain of the Andrea Gail who has been plagued by bad luck at sea and is on a poor run of catches. Frustrated by the huge hauls of the Hannah Boden captained by Linda Greenlaw (Mary Ann Mastrantonio) Tyne decides to head back out to sea for the Flemish Cap a remote area renowned for its rich fishing prospects. He is joined by a number of his regular crew including Billy Shatford (Mark Wahlberg) Dale Murphy (John C Reilly) David Sullivan (William Fichtner) Alfred Pierre (Allen Payne) and Michael Moran (John Hawkes). Sure enough Tyne's luck changes for the better at the Flemish Cap and the Andrea Gail catches a full haul. Buoyed by the money that awaits them back home the crew sets off back to Gloucester but disturbing weather patterns hamper their progress and they soon find themselves battling against 100ft waves and 120mph winds that threaten to tear the boat apart. Includes the Novel and the HBO 20 minute documentary 'Creating the Storm' highlighting the groundbreaking special effects and story behind the movie.

  • Tucker & Dale Vs Evil [Blu-ray] [2011] [Region Free]Tucker & Dale Vs Evil | Blu Ray | (07/03/2016) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

A confident mix of comedy and horror, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil brings together Firefly star Alan Tudyk and Reaper’s Tyler Labine as a pair of hillbillies. More to the point, they’re a pair of hillbillies who have bought themselves a secluded cabin in the middle of the woods. Anyone who’s seen even a handful of horror movies will have be more than familiar with the conventions that are being set up, and might just be settling back for a dose of the familiar. But they don’t really get it. Instead, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil chooses to play up the comedy, thanks to writer-director Eli Craig’s very good script. It’s a screenplay that accepts and warms to the trappings of a horror movie, and then has a great deal of fun playing with them. Thus, when a bunch of students turn up in the middle of the woods, things don’t quite go the way that many will be expecting. It’s odd that Tucker & Dale Vs Evil never really secured itself the broader theatrical exposure it deserves, because it’s a really smart film. Granted, it’s bereft of outright movie stars, but the pairing of Tudyk and Labine proves inspired, and Craig is wise enough to keep his running time nice and tight. Don’t let the relatively low budget of the production lead you to think you’re not getting good value from a Blu-ray upgrade, mind. In terms of picture quality in particular, you get a really sharp transfer here, and the audio mix is no slouch either. Given that most people never got to enjoy the film in cinemas, it seems right to make the most of it in the home. Tucker & Dale Vs Evil is far from the most ambitious film of recent times. But it’s certainly one of the funniest. It throws in the necessary gore quotient expected by fans of the horror genre, but delivers far more solid laughs that its relative anonymity might lead you to expect. It’s pretty much the epitome, then, of an undercover gem. --Jon Foster

  • Brotherhood Of Murder [1999]Brotherhood Of Murder | DVD | (04/02/2002) from £5.99   |  Saving you £-2.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £3.99

Based on a true story, Brotherhood of Murder is the sorry tale of Tony Martinez, an army dropout who becomes convinced that the downturn his life has taken is attributable to the fact that America's ethnic minorities are getting a better deal than he is. There's a ghastly inevitability to what follows as he joins a group of white supremacists who are funding a survivalist community largely through criminal activities. Eventually it's more than even he can bear, so he betrays the group to the FBI. Along the way, there are a few extraordinary scenes, such as when the group cleans out the cash register of a porno video store, leaving the proprietor unharmed but demanding that he remove from his shelves any material depicting interracial sex. This low-key but compelling production gives an insight into how such a strange and very ugly culture can arise out of ignorance and blunted perception. The disc also includes a trailer and a Synergy showcase. --Roger Thomas
