When Carry On Teacher was released in 1959, the series was still in its infancy but all the familiar constituent parts were already in place. Innuendo, naturally, reigns supreme and on the brink of the permissive 1960s it's surprising what Peter Rodgers and the gang were able to get away with. "Are you satisfied with your equipment, Miss Allcock?", child psychologist Leslie Phillips asks gym mistress Joan Sims. Naturally, it isn't five minutes before Miss Allcock's shorts have split, leading to a series of pants gags. And we're off. For Carry On fans, Teacher contains many of the funniest lines and certainly some of the best performances from the whole series. Kenneth Williams is still acting rather than giving his mannerisms a good work out. Hattie Jacques is establishing her gorgon-with-a-soft-centre-for-the-right-man persona and Charles Hawtrey's birdlike twitching makes him ideal as the precious music teacher. A youthful Carol White and Richard O'Sullivan are among the scheming pupils. But you don't have to be a diehard Carry On fan to appreciate the boisterous, sub-St Trinians comedy. And thanks to Ted Ray's poignant acting as the headmaster, there's a real moment of Mr Chips-style bathos at the very end. On the DVD: Carry On Teacher doesn't gain much from being presented in widescreen. Much of its appeal lies in its familiarity. All we ask for is a clear print--and in black and white this is diamond sharp--and decent sound quality. The whole thing fits like a comfortable old shoe. But apart from the scene index there are no extras on the disc. Given the cult status of the Carry On films, and the wealth of documentary material which has been made about them and their stars, you'd think something extra could have been offered with the DVD releases to make them a more worthwhile alternative to the video. --Piers Ford
The sole survivor of a mining accident who was confined in a mental institution after the ordeal returns to get revenge...
A show within a show along the lines of iCarly, Sonny with a Chance is a funny Disney Channel TV sitcom about friendship, pursuing one's dreams, and doing what's right. When country girl Sonny Munroe (Demi Lovato) from Wisconsin gets a chance to star in the Hollywood teen television comedy So Random!, moving to Hollywood is a no-brainer. Full of enthusiasm and great ideas for the show, Sonny hits her first roadblock immediately upon arriving on the set in "Sketchy Beginning." It seems her self-absorbed costar Tawni (Tiffany Thornton) doesn't want Sonny sharing her dressing room or the spotlight, and she's certainly not quiet about her displeasure. When Sonny's idea for a new sketch excites producer Marshall Pikes (Michael Kostroff) and the rest of the cast, Tawni is furious, and her bad attitude winds up getting her pulled from that week's show. On the plus side, Sonny's costars Zora (Allisyn Ashley Arm), Nico (Brandon Smith), and Grady (Doug Brochu) are quickly gaining an appreciation for Sonny and her sense of humor. "West Coast Story" introduces the So Random! cast's nemesis Chad Dylan Cooper (Sterling Knight), star of the competing teen drama McKenzie Falls. Sonny unwittingly stirs up a hornet's nest of trouble when she swoons over Chad and winds up losing the So Random! parking spot. Sonny tries to smooth things over with a peace picnic, but she quickly discovers that just because a concept works in Wisconsin, that doesn't mean it will work in Hollywood. In "Cheater Girls" it looks like Tawni and Sonny are finally starting to get along and work collaboratively, but geometry threatens the girls' friendship as well as their participation in that week's show. "Sonny at the Falls" is all about friendship, and when Sonny doesn't receive the support she needs from her fellow So Random! stars, she decides to find out what it's like to be a part of the McKenzie Falls gang. Regardless of your opinion on the topic, If These Walls Could Talk is a bold and provocative examination of how the laws and attitudes about abortion in the United States have both changed drastically and remained so much the same. Three women, three time periods, one house: each finds herself in trouble and must face the overwhelming decision about what to do with the unwanted pregnancy. The first segment is the most powerful, featuring Demi Moore as a young, recently widowed nurse in 1952. With no-one to turn to and with limited financial means, her options are few. Catherine Keener costars as her harshly judgmental sister-in-law. The next piece occurs in 1974 as Sissy Spacek, a mother of four trying to earn a college degree, discovers she's pregnant with her fifth child. Her utterly modern feminist daughter encourages Spacek to get a newly legal abortion, but it's a complex decision. In the final segment, college student Anne Heche becomes pregnant by her married professor. Her best friend, played by Jada Pinkett, is resolutely against abortion and the two wrangle over right and wrong. As the young woman tries to learn about her options, she finds herself enmeshed in the pro-life demonstrations outside the abortion clinic. Cher, who directs this segment (the other two are directed by Nancy Savoca), costars as a doctor at the clinic. While trying to be even-handed and demonstrating the different choices different women make, the film does have a decidedly pro-choice leaning. Yet the power of the movie is undeniable and it raises significant questions on both sides of the abortion debate, making it an important film for women (and men) everywhere to watch and talk about. --Jenny Brown

Alexandre Dumas' classic tale of fraternal squabbling makes a more than satisfactory transition to celluloid with this 1976 made-for-television swashbuckler. Viewers familiar with the more recent Leonardo DiCaprio version may be stymied at first by the non-MTV pace and the rather unhip presence of Richard Chamberlain in the lead role(s). This well-lensed action film overcomes a somewhat poky first half to emerge as a terrific adventure, complete with plenty of derring-do, some sharply pointed dialogue, and a wonderful performance by the incomparably malevolent Patrick McGoohan. Rousing fun for burgeoning rapscallions of all ages. Director Mike Newell would later find success in a different genre with Four Weddings and a Funeral. Ian Holm, Louis Jordan, and Ralph Richardson round out the embarrassingly rich supporting cast. --Andrew Wright
