When it comes to Mississippi-rooted blues delivered with pure passion and grit no living performer equaled Robert Lee Burnside. Born near Oxford Mississippi in 1926 he moved around and finally settled in Holly Springs making a living on the farm as a sharecropper. At the age of seventeen he took up singing and playing guitar. One of his teachers is former next-door neighbour Mississippi Fred McDowell one of the most influential bottleneck players ever. With its roots in the rough hills of North-Eastern Mississippi: a blend of hypnotic almost mantra-like chords with the rhythm of the local Fife And Drum bands which has its source in Africa and goes back to the 19th century. Of this music - rarely heard nowadays - R.L. Burnside was one of the last and foremost protagonists. It's not until 1968 that he made his recording debut at the instigation of writer and folklore specialist George Mitchell. In 1996 R.L . recorded A Ass Pocket Of Whiskey with Jon Spencer and became suddenly known worldwide. In 2005 R.L. died. Johnny Woods also a Mississippi man was born in 1917 in a small town called Looxahoma. His delightful harmonica playing is as much rooted in the single note of North- Mississippi Fife And Drum band tradition as it is in the multi-faceted music of blues legends like Sonny Boy John Lee Williamson. Sad to say he didn't immediately receive the credit that his artistic achievements deserved. Like so many bluesmen he had to wait for a breakthrough until his early fifties when he was discovered by the same man who had given Burnside a break in the sixties: George Mitchell. The registrations on this DVD wer recorded some twenty years ago in the back of the Swingmaster record shop. It captures the unique collaboration of two legends in their own right who keep the heritage of their North-Mississippi roots alive. The informal atmosphere during the session adds an extra dimension to the music which is nothing short of superb. It's all about doing comfortably what they always regarded as being a natural part of their lives. That particular afternoon the air was filled with magic. The smile on Mr. Burnside's face says it all. Tracklist: 1. Poor Black Mattie 2. Rolling & Tumbling 3. Peach Tree Blues 4. Skinny Woman 5. Going Down South 7. I Believe My Time Ain't Long 8. For director Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich it all began with The Blue Angel, one of the masterpieces of Germany's Weimar cinema. This landmark film thrust the sultry and unrestrained Dietrich on an unsuspecting international film audience. She plays the prototypical role of Lola, the singer who tempts repressed professor Emil Jannings (the king of expressionist actors) into complete submission night after night at the Blue Angel night-club. The film perfectly captures the masochism and degradation of the Weimar Republic, just before the rise of Adolf Hitler. And yet the moral confusion exhibited by Jannings is really due to his own torment. Dietrich is merely an instrument of his innermost desires, standing on stage in top hat, stockings and bare thighs singing "Falling in Love Again". --Bill Desowitz, Amazon.com

The new production in June 2004 was a huge success in Paris because of the illustrious cast especially Renee Fleming in the role of countess. She sung this part for the first time and impressed the audience with her exceptional voice and stage presence. She will sing the role also at the Met in 2006/07.The other singers Anne Sofie von Otter Rainer Trost Gerald Finley Dietrich Henschel and Franz Hawlata are all idiomatic and beautifully singing so that the performance was regarded as an ideal interpretation of Richard Strauss' last opera by the French press. Ulf Schirmer is a German conductor who is regularly appearing at the Paris Opera the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Vienna State Opera and recorded the same opera with Kiri Te Kanawa on Decca. Despite being directed by Roger Vadim, this And God Created Woman is not the 1956 classic but a loose remake from some 30 years later (1987) which attempts to update the original's themes. Rebecca De Mornay takes the central role, this time as Robin, a woman released from jail on parole due to her recent marriage to Billy (Vincent Spano). Once on the outside, she pursues her dreams of rock stardom and enters into a love triangle with state governor elect, James Tiernan (Frank Langella). Whereas Vadim's own original film may have exuded unspoken sexual tension (in no small part due to its star, Brigette Bardot), any pretence of subtlety here is lost as De Mornay sheds her clothes at every possible opportunity in the film's series of soft porn sex scenes, all accompanied--as indeed is virtually every moment of the film--by an appalling 80s rock soundtrack. The acting is uniformly awful, with De Mornay taking the prize for the worst performance of all, fighting a losing battle for the viewer's attention with her seemingly ever-growing hair. Indeed, And God Created Woman is best recommended to those who gleefully indulge in the worst that the cinematic arts have to offer and it would easily feature in a top ten of most awful films of recent years. On the DVD: Alongside the chapter selection facility, the various filmographies point to what a waste of potential talent this film is. With the picture quality unable to improve on the TV-movie feel of the whole project, the audio presents the horrible American rock backing in all its glory--despite that fact the music sequences are amongst the most laughingly unconvincing ever committed to celluloid. --Phil Udell
