Jerry Lee Lewis caught live in concert
New !!! Neuf !!! Neu !!! Nuovo !!! Nuevo !!!
It's 1971 and The Killer is hot. Jerry Lee Lewis is in the middle of the most creative consistent and successful period of his career. Since 1968 when Eddy Kilroy convinced him to cut Another Place Another Time the country hits have just kept coming. The midas touch has returned and Jerry Lee is the Hit Machine as those early days at Sun promised. Ironically the hits are coming from both new Mercury Smash releases and vintage material from the last two Sun Record Sessions at 639 Madison in Memphis.THE JERRY LEE LEWS SHOW was shot in Nashville in the summer of '71 under the direction of Rita Gillespie of Oh Boy and Shindig fame and represents a tentative pitch at the television market. Intended as a pilot to tempt the networks to a weekly show it was neither picked up or even shown. The failure was perhaps bound up in two issues - the ever present lack of strong management direction and the dilemma of the rock and country markets. The finished product simply sits on the fence. The guest stars feel the lack of clear market definition for whilst both Carl Perkins and Jackie Wilson give vintage performances they are not potent rock forces. The networks then as now like clean straightforward material to fit their categories. Thirty years on this DVD provides a unique opportunity to view The Killer in his country prime working with probably the best Memphis-Beats line-up including Eddie Debruhl Buddy Church Charlie Owen and Jerry Lee's best friend Jackie and sister Linda Gail Lewis plus fascinating location material shot in Florida Louisiana and Natchez Mississippi. As such it is a must for any rock and country collection and a chance to relish Jerry Lee Lewis at his best.Tracks include: Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On / Autumn Leaves / Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson / Honey Don't - Carl Perkins
People come. People go. Nothing ever happens, one world-weary patron (Lewis Stone) of Berlin's finest hotel comments. Movie audiences knew better. They were witnessing the glorious comings, goings and intersecting stories of a starry array billed as the greatest cast in stage or screen history! Ruined aristocrat John Barrymore. Terminally ill clerk Lionel Barrymore. Ruthless tycoon Wallace Beery. Scheming stenographer Joan Crawford. And disillusioned ballerina Greta Garbo. Teaming them was a masterstroke whose success fostered more star-packed extravaganzas. The radiant film captured the 1931-32 Best Picture Academy Award. What a grand showcase of the allure and style of classic movie-making! Special Features: Commentary by Jeffrey Vance and Mark A. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis star in their first film together directed by Hal Walker a hilarious slapstick comedy about two buddies' mishaps at an army training camp during world war II. After stealing the shows with their supporting roles in 'My Friend Irma' and its sequel 'My Friend Irma Goes West' Paramount decided to build an entire film around their popular contract play comedy duo Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. This 1950 release was a huge hit that would inspire numerous other successful teamings before they split up in 1956. Placing the two of them on an army base and getting them involved in all sorts of crazy situations on and off the front lines adds up to some sheer hilarity and one of their best teamings. Dean Martin is Vic Puccinelli a newly promoted sergeant who finds himself head over heels in love with pretty Polly Bergen. Desperate Martin enlists the aid of his bumbling pal Private Alvin Corwin (Jerry Lewis) to help him win her over.
And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python's first feature, is a reworking of their best skits from the first two seasons of the TV series. Originally made for the US market (where the show had yet to be aired), it was shot on film outside the usual studio sets ("Nudge Nudge", for example, is set in a tavern filled with passers-by). The writing and performances are fine and the film is packed with some of their best bits: "How to Avoid Being Seen", " Hell's Grannies", "Blackmail", "The Lumberjack Song" and "The Upper Class Twit of the Year", among others. Many of the sketches have been shortened, however, and the loss of the overly bright video sheen (the film has a muddy, dull look to it) and the invigorating presence of a live audience leaves the film sluggish at times. They're still feeling out the possibilities of the feature length, which they conquered with their next movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974). --Sean Axmaker
