With a title like Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, you'd be excused from any great expectations here--but you'd also be missing out on one of trash-cinema's great pleasures: catching one of Hollywoood's A-list in their pre-fame days. In this case, the catch is Billy Bob Thornton, in a brief appearance as one of the Chopper Chicks' ex-husbands. It may be a guilty pleasure, but seeing this good 'ol boy playing dumb-as-a-doorknob long before Sling Blade (or A Simple Plan) and paying his dues is still, however strangely, gratifying. As for the film itself, Chopper Chicks is no Hell Comes to Frogtown, but it comes with all of the Troma hallmarks. The requisite beheadings and low-grade effects are all present and correct, along with the so-bad-it's-really-bad dialogue (except for the occasional so-bad-it's-good one-liner). The acting is wooden, the story negligible (cycle sluts come to town, kill zombies, save a schoolbus full of blind kids), and even the appearances by Thornton and original MTV (US) VJ Martha Quinn provide only occasional relief. The DVD extras include a photo gallery of screen-stills and the original trailer. --Randy Silver
Steamboat Bill Jr dates from 1928 and is the last great film Buster Keaton made before he gave up his independence and signed for MGM. Buster is the rather fey son of an elderly steamboat owner who is being driven out of business by a wealthy competitor. More by accident than intention Buster turns things around and gets the girl as well. The last 15 minutes are truly astonishing: a storm sequence in which a whole town is blown apart, with Buster experiencing a series of amazing escapes as buildings fall down around his ears. On the DVD: The print is a good one, best seen in the 4:3 ration, with unobtrusive organ music added. As a nautical extra there's The Boat, a 1921 short (the print not in such a good state as the feature), in which in the course of launching his newly built craft Buster manages to wreck his house, tip his car into the river and sink the boat. And that's only the beginning. --Ed Buscombe
1971 British gangster drama VILLAIN is directed by Michael Tuchner, his feature film debut. Starring Richard Burton (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf) as a sadistic London gang leader inspired by Ronnie Kray, the film is based on James Barlow's 1968 book Burden of Proof. East end gang chief Vic Dakin is a violent psychopath who lives with his mother (Cathleen Nesbitt, An Affair to Remember) whilst making a living by running a prosperous protection racket. After a tip off for a potential payroll heist opportunity, Dakin starts planning the job, bringing in a gang from the criminal underworld alongside associate Wolfe Lissner (Ian McShane, John Wick). Detective Inspector Robert Matthews (Nigel Davenport, Chariots of Fire) has been tasked to arrest Dakin when he makes his first mistake and is watching his every move, determined to catch him in the act. When a gang member is hospitalised and Matthews is closing in, can Dakin silence him before he confesses all? An obsessively punctual comprehensive school headmaster sets out to give an important speech at the annual Headmasters' Conference.
Box set featuring all three 'From Dusk Till Dawn' movies. In the first Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney play Richard and Seth Gecko, a pair of brothers on the run together after a prison break. The brothers have kidnapped a preacher (Harvey Keitel) and his children and hidden out in an isolated nightclub. However, the club is full of bloodthirsty types, and the captors and convicts soon team up to preserve their skins. In 'From Dusk Till Dawn 2' a gang of murderous bank-robbers head down to Mexico with the plans for the perfect heist. Unfortunately, en route, they stop at the wrong bar, and end up confronted by a host of vampires. As the robbers begin to develop a strong taste for blood, it is up to the last human gang member (Robert Patrick) and a Texan sheriff (Bo Hopkins) to thwart their vampiric desires and escape. Finally, 'From Dusk Till Dawn 3 - The Hangman's Daughter' goes back to the time when the whole saga began. Johnny Madrid, on the run after kidnapping the beautiful Esmeralda, daughter of the man who tried to hang him, takes shelter in an isolated inn. Unfortunately however, the inn is run by vampires and Esmeralda is in fact their long-awaited princess, the legendary half-human, half-vampire Santanico Pandemonium. This means it will probably be a sleepless night for most concerned.
