  • Hot Tub Time Machine [DVD] [2010] Hot Tub Time Machine | DVD | (30/08/2010) from £3.79  |  Saving you £16.20 (81.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Hot Tub Time Machine hits the bull's-eye: it's a rude, crude comedy with enough smarts and emotional sweetness to make it completely entertaining. Seeking to bring some youthful optimism back to their failed, miserable lives, three middle-aged guys--Adam (John Cusack), Nick (Craig Robinson), and Lou (Rob Corddry)--go to a mountain resort where they spent some of their wildest days (reluctantly dragging along Adam's nephew, Jacob, played by newcomer Clark Duke). A drunken accident in the titular hot tub sends them swirling back to 1986, where each of them decides to risk changing the future (and possibly erasing Jacob from existence) by doing things just a little differently. A plot summary doesn't capture the movie's rambunctious, daffy spirit as much as… well, the ridiculous title: this is a movie called Hot Tub Time Machine! Any expectation you may have will be met and surpassed. John Cusack delivers another underplayed yet marvellously funny performance, his best since High Fidelity; Clark Duke, from the TV show Greek, proves a promising young comic talent. But the movie really belongs to Robinson and Corddry, who've been floating around the edges of tons of comedies--some have been good, some have been bad, but they've both been consistently funny even in crappy movies. Hot Tub Time Machine gives them centre stage and lets them reveal the comic chaos they can deliver. It helps, but is not necessary, to have lived through the '80s to find Hot Tub Time Machine exquisitely silly. --Bret Fetzer

  • 127 Hours [DVD] 127 Hours | DVD | (06/06/2011) from £4.09  |  Saving you £15.90 (79.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Aron Ralston (played by James Franco) is traipsing alone through Utah's Canyonlands National Park, minding his own sweet-natured, loosey-goosey business, when an errant step drops him into a crevasse. That in itself wouldn't be so bad if he hadn't managed to get his right hand stuck between a heavy boulder and the side of the cavern--a cavern that will be his grave, if he doesn't figure out how to get himself out. Danny Boyle's film of this real-life 2003 incident builds up to what we all know is going to happen: Ralston must sever his arm between his elbow and wrist, after a few long, lonely days of avoiding the idea. (Superb casual line delivery by Franco: "So I found this great tourniquet….") Because this is a film by the director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, we can expect a barrage of visual high jinks, despite the fact that this story would seem to be a simple tale of a man stuck in the desert. Boyle deploys flashbacks and fantasies to fill up the screen, plus he gets some mileage out of Ralston's video camera--and, of course, this director can't resist juicing the soundtrack with pop tunes, from Sigur Rós to Edith Piaf to Slumdog composer A.R. Rahman. Maybe Boyle is simply hyperactive, or maybe he's really onto something about what would happen inside the mind of a man left in extremis for an extended period (who wouldn't have a few Boyle-esque hallucinations, under the circumstances?). The cumulative effect is overbearing, but Franco's performance is spirited and endearing--he makes Ralston sufficiently "of life" that you definitely don't want to see this goofball soul be lost. --Robert Horton

  • Cloverfield [Blu-ray] [2007] Cloverfield | Blu Ray | (08/09/2008) from £4.99  |  Saving you £20.00 (80.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Cloverfield is one of the most exciting and frightening sci-fi horrors of the last decade. A wobbly-rollercoaster ride that weaves its rickety way through darkened subways and exploding skyscrapers to avoid the powerful terrifying and destructive force that has New York City under attack. Matt Reeves' monster-horror combines suspense terror and explosions within its sudden claustrophobic and tension-filled scenes of desperate New Yorkers struggling to stay alive. Rob's (Michael Stahl-David) impending trip to Tokyo is put on hold when during his going away party a devastating and frightening presence starts to destroy the city. As the explosions screams and devastation increase Rob his brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and their group of friends face the most difficult decision of their lives. As Rob's long-term friend and current love interest Beth (Odette Yustman) is trapped alone in her apartment on the other side of the city do they attempt to save themselves and flee the city to safety or head further in to the ruin and save Beth? Cloverfield is a fantastically wrought film where The Blair Witch Project style of using a handheld home video camera throughout adds tension and captures the chilling realism of the situation in which the city and group have found themselves in. With stylistic flourishes and inventive shocks director Matt Reeves and visionary producer J. J. Abrams (Lost) have delivered on their 'documentary-style' monster attack concept and produced an enjoyable exhilarating and downright scary monster movie.
