An atmospheric adaptation of The Ringer - the play that earned global fame for English master of suspense Edgar Wallace and remains his best-known story - this classic whodunit combines taut direction and inspired characterisation, with Patrick Barr starring as a beleaguered Scotland Yard investigator, John Longdon his hawkish superior and, in an early film role as a particularly haughty secretary, Patricia Roc. Also notable as the first film produced at Ealing by Michael Balcon, The Gaunt St...

Both visually and psychologically, Marnie is crass in comparison with Hitchcock's peak achievement in Vertigo--although it shares some of that film's characteristic obsessive themes. Sean Connery, fresh from From Russia with Love, is a Philadelphia playboy who begins to fall for Tippi Hedren's blonde ice goddess only when he realises that she's a professional thief (she's come to work in his upper-crust insurance office in order to embezzle mass quantities). His patient programme of investigation and surveillance has a creepy, voyeuristic quality that's pure Hitchcock, but all's lost when it emerges that the root of Marnie's problem is phobic sexual frigidity, induced by a childhood trauma. Luckily, Sean is up to the challenge, as it were. Not even DH Lawrence believed as fervently as Hitchcock in the curative properties of sexual release. --David Chute

The sunny streets of Brooklyn, just after World War II. A young would-be writer named Stingo (Peter MacNicol) shares a boarding house with beautiful Polish immigrant Sophie (Meryl Streep) and her tempestuous lover, Nathan (Kevin Kline); their friendship changes his life. This adaptation of the bestselling novel by William Styron is faithful to the point of being reverential, which is not always the right way to make a film come to life. But director Alan J. Pakula (All the President's Men) provides a steady, intelligent path into the harrowing story of Sophie, whose flashback memories of the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp form the backbone of the movie. Streep's exceptional performance--flawless Polish accent and all--won her an Oscar, and effectively raised the standard for American actresses of her generation. No less impressive is Kevin Kline, in his movie debut, capturing the mercurial moods of the dangerously attractive Nathan. The two worlds of Sophie's Choice, nostalgic Brooklyn and monstrous Europe, are beautifully captured by the gifted cinematographer Néstor Almendros, whose work was Oscar-nominated but didn't win. It should have. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com

One of the areas of human knowledge which has expanded fastest over the last few decades is our awareness of the complexities of human evolution. Ape·Man is a useful summary of the current state of play dealing with such important questions as the divergence of early hominids from the other apes and the final confrontation of modern humans and their Neanderthal cousins. It is a fair-minded handling of some of the crucial debates--at what point, say, is it legitimate to talk of humans and human ancestors starting to decorate their possessions, say, and when did language and the complex innovations in hunting it makes possible start to be a factor? Inventive portrayals of the life of early humans as they wander out of the mists of time alternate with coherent and accessible accounts of fossil evidence, DNA studies and archaeology; this is both an intellectually satisfying series and an emotionally charged one. --Roz Kaveney
