This John Irvin film is a small, hard-edged little gem, full of crisp action and tough-minded codes of honour. Harvey Keitel stars as a retired professional criminal whose younger brother (Timothy Hutton) lures him to Los Angeles for a can't-miss heist in Palm Springs. But Hutton hasn't picked his other partners very well, particularly wheelman Stephen Dorff: when it's time to divvy up the spoils, Dorff kills Hutton and a fourth partner and tries to rub out Keitel. Keitel escapes, however, and trails Dorff back to L.A., where he also figures out which Chinese mob he's tied in with. It's strictly revenge time from there on out, with Keitel as the one-man wrecking crew cutting a bloody swathe through the L.A. underworld. Keitel is grittily good, a man of few words and many bullets, while Dorff is an enjoyably sleazy psychopath. A violently propulsive little film noir. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

The Fast Runner turns the frozen landscape of northern Canada into the stage for an adventure as sweeping as The Odyssey or Beowulf. Adapted from an Inuit legend, The Fast Runner centres on Atanarjuat, a charismatic young hunter struggling for the affections of Atuat, who has already been promised to Oki, the son of the camp's leader. When Atuat chooses Atanarjuat, Oki seems to accept it, but later events turn his anger and hatred into a murderous spite. This story, as passionate and primal as any film noir, is framed by the daily lives of the Inuit--a struggle for survival that is both simple and vivid, foreign yet immediately understandable. No one in the cast is a professional actor, but the performances are direct and compelling, telling a story that is epic and intimate. --Bret Fetzer

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned! In part 1 of Quentin Tarantino's delirious revenge movie Uma Thurman plays 'The Bride' a woman seeking vengeance on those who massacred her wedding party... Inspired by countless Japanese swordplay actionfests (the classic Lady Snowblood among them) yakuza gangster thrillers (offering a cameo opportunity to genre icon Sonny Chiba) and Chinese martial arts movies (hence the knowing appearance of Jackie Chan contemporary Gordon Liu) Quentin Tarantino borrows from the best in order to shape his deliciously over the top cinematographic style into a simple but effective plot. Look out too for 'Battle Royale' alumni Chiaki Kuriyama as Lucy Lui's weapon-wielding schoolgirl bodyguard and the gravel-voiced Shun Sugata (he of 'Ichi The Killer' fame who also appeared alongside Tom Cruise in 'The Last Samurai'). Homage? Pastiche? 'Kill Bill' is not just for movie anoraks complete with all the super-smooth tunes that you'd expect from a Tarantino soundtrack it's definitely the most outrageously entertaining film yet from cinema's king of cool!
