| RRP Mutant X takes the useful SF trope of the mutant minority persecuted by the state and adds potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 3 contains the following episodes: "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Adam's invisible ex-lover Danielle needs stabilising by a gene resequencer which has been stolen from him by Eckhart's agents. "Double Vision". New mutant Maddie splits Emma into two--one Emma is completely ruthless and prepared to destroy Eckhart and the GSA at huge cost in life. "Blood Ties". Jesse meets his father again and is recruited by him to a vengeance crusade that may be a cover for industrial espionage. "Altered Ego". A mutant's power changes Adam into a ruthless villain determined to destroy his friends. The DVDs also contain trailers, a file on Genomex, interviews with the makeup artists and with Lauren Lee Smith (Emma). --Roz Kaveney

from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Treasure Planet, a pet project of Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules codirectors Ron Clements and John Musker, is an ambitious animation hybrid (traditional animation combined with elaborate CGI backgrounds). It was the subject of numerous in-studio battles, but Disney office politics and a poor public reception shouldn't distract one from its many admirable qualities, not the least being its overall fidelity to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island. Curiously revamped as a sci-fi adventure with space-faring galleons, flintlock ray guns and extreme-sports attitude, it caters to a young audience for whom Stevenson's adventure is an undiscovered treasure, revving up the material with arcade-game excitements. It's entertaining, for what it is, and kids will surely enjoy it. Maybe next time, however, Disney will follow its own legacy and properly adapt Stevenson (as they did with their 1950 live-action classic) for a new, and hopefully receptive, generation. --Jeff Shannon

Edvard Grieg - What Price Immortality ? | DVD | (28/09/2001)
from £9.88
| Saving you £11.37 (131.90%)
| RRP A 70-minute co-production between various European TV companies Edvard Grieg: What Price Immortality? seeks to reveal the man behind the iconic image of Norway's great national composer. Death in Venice (1971) is immediately called to mind as the narrative unfolds through the memories of an elderly Grieg sitting alone on the deck of a boat, particularly in sequences which suggest a more-than-platonic love for fellow composer Rikard Nordraak. The memory structure likewise suggests the Proust adaptation Time Regained, from the same year, while comparison can also be drawn with Ken Russell's TV composer biopics, particularly the elegiac Song of Summer (1968). Set around performances of two of Grieg's most personal works, the piano Ballade and the String Quartet, director Thomas Olofsson effectively creates a "silent movie" where the storytelling is predominantly visual, eloquently assisted by Derek Jacobi as the voice of the composer. Grieg is played by various actors at different ages, most notably by the distinguished pianist Staffan Scheja, while even without uttering a word Claudia Z makes a charismatic impression as Grieg's wife, Nina. Elegantly composed and lit, this beautiful, resolutely middle-brow film is ultimately far too derivative of previous art films to achieve artistic greatness of its own. On the DVD: the stereo sound and anamorphically enhanced 1.77:1 image are both very good, with the latter showing just occasional grain. Colours and detail levels are excellent. There are no extras, only Spanish subtitles and a choice of English, French and German voiceovers. Trailers for a further five Arthaus DVDs are included. --Gary S Dalkin
