A forged banknote leads to a tragic chain of events that culminates in murder, in Robert Bresson's superb swansong. Based on a short story by Tolstoy, L'Argent is Bresson's uncompromising last word on sin, chance and salvation, themes that he explored with such power and force throughout his 40-year career. Shot in the director's imitable austere style, the film won the Best Director prize at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival and is widely regarded as one of his great masterpieces.

  • The Agitator: Three Provocations from the Wild World of Jean-Pierre Mocky (Limited Editon) [Blu-ray] [Region A & B & C]The Agitator: Three Provocations from the Wild World of Jean-Pierre Mocky (Limited Editon) | Blu Ray | (01/07/2024) from £38.38   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Jean-Pierre Mocky was a prolific icon in French cinema. Actor, director, novelist, and in-demand raconteur, Mocky made mainstream films with an independent spirit, even owning a cinema to help the distribution of his films. Yet those films had a specific style, unmistakably his, often with controversial and outlandish themes, and he came to be known as a wild and untameable force, acting as an uncompromising agitator within the French film industry for over six decades. Three of his wild cinematic adventures from the 1980s are collected in this new boxset. Cult horror sensation Litan, hooligan horror Kill the Referee and Hitchcockian mystery Agent Trouble are presented from new 4K restorations on Blu-ray for the first time outside of France. Worried by a disturbing dream, Nora wakes to find her husband missing during a trip to Litan. She goes out to find him but encounters one bizarre event after another taking place at the village festival, including uncanny acts and a masked marching band. As Nora and Jock attempt to escape the village, a series of strange murders take place against the backdrop of a mad doctor performing experiments on the recently deceased. Jean-Pierre Mocky's Litan is a classic cult Euro-horror and a Kafkaesque fever dream of surrealist imagery, arrestingly shot by Edmond Richard (The Trial, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie). When a referee calls a penalty that causes a French football team to crash out of the championship, their ultra-dedicated hooligan fans vow to track him down and murder him by the end of the evening, as Inspector Granowski (played by director Jean-Pierre Mocky) attempts to stem the carnage. With an unrelenting one-night narrative recalling After Hours and Green Room, Kill the Referee mixes black humour with horror as its escalating sense of dread builds toward a shattering climax. A bus of fifty French tourists lay dead. While the driver makes a call, a wanderer, Victorien (Tom Novembre, Denti), boards the bus and robs all the passengers. Returning home he visits his aunt Amanda (Catherine Deneuve, The Hunger), and lets her in on his secret, unwittingly bringing her to the attention of icy hitman Alex (Richard Bohringer, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover). A conspiracy thriller reminiscent of Hitchcock, Jean-Pierre Mocky's wonderfully eccentric mystery has a light comic touch that carefully balances its grotesque flourishes. Featuring a wonderful cast including Cesar-nominated Dominique Lavant, Pierre Arditi and Kristin Scott Thomas in only her second screen appearance.LIMITED EDITION BOX SET SPECIAL FEATURES: New 4K restorations of each film presented on three discs, made available on Blu-ray (1080p) for the first time outside of France Uncompressed mono PCM audio Archival interview with Jean-Pierre Mocky about his relationship to the fantastic (1982, 12 mins) Archival ˜Making of Litan' documentary from French television (1982, 26 mins) Newly filmed interview with journalist and broadcaster Philippe Auclair on Kill the Referee (2024) Interview with Mocky's assistant Eric Leroy on Kill the Referee (2022, 13 mins) Television reportage from the set of Kill the Referee (1983, 5 mins) Archival French TV interview with Jean-Pierre Mocky (1987, 18 mins) Archival interview with Catherine Deneuve on Agent Trouble (1987, 5 mins) Archival interview with Richard Bohringer on Agent Trouble (1987, 5 mins) Interview with Eric Leroy on Agent Trouble (2022, 13 mins) Interview with Olivia Mokiejewski on Agent Trouble (2022, 4 mins) New and improved optional English subtitles Reversible sleeves featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Time Tomorrow Limited edition 80-page book featuring new writing by Roberto Curti, Nathaniel Thompson and Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, and newly translated archival interviews including Serge Toubiana on Jean-Pierre Mocky, and Oliver Assayas on Michel Serrault, as well as an on-set report of Kill the Referee Limited Edition of 3000 copies, presented in a rigid box with full-height Scanavo cases and removable OBI strip leaving packaging free of certificates and markings

Masculine/Feminine was Jean-Luc Godard's first (but not the last) foray into the burgeoning Children of the Sixties generationor, as Godard described it, the children of Marx and Coca-Cola . Impressionable teenager Jean-Pierre Leaud tries to make sense of the world by working as an interviewer for a research firm. Meanwhile, Leaud cohabits with aspiring singer Chantal Goya, with two additional young ladies joining the nocturnal festivities. Leaud jumps or is pushed from a window, leaving a pregnant Goya to move on to the next aimless youth she meets. While the nominal hero has failed to find fulfillment in personal relations, another male protagonist (Micheal Deborb), a political activist, is luckier an indication that the director favored revolutionary politics over simple emotionalism at this point in his career. Though Godard's free-form style is usually opposed to linear storytelling, Masculine Feminine has solid literary roots, having been inspired by two Guy de Maupassant.

  • Jean Michel Jarre - Jarre In China (2 DVDs and Live CD Album)Jean Michel Jarre - Jarre In China (2 DVDs and Live CD Album) | DVD | (06/06/2005) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £24.99

In 1981 Jean Michel Jarre was invited by the Chinese government to become the first western musician to perform in the People’s Republic of China. Performing 5 concerts in Beijing and Shanghai the tour encountered numerous problems including arriving at an arena to find only one power socket and having to buy back concert tickets from stone-faced VIPs and redistribute them free to the Chinese public. October 2004 and Jarre returns to Beijing with 70 tonnes of equipment to open China’s "Year of France" cultural exchange with an outdoor concert. Choosing a picturesque location at Wumen Gate in the Forbidden City, Jarre performed with both modern and traditional Chinese Orchestras, choir, opera singers, and several guest musicians including Chen Lin, and guitarist Patrick Rondat. Jarre was prevented from performing with China’s Cui Jian whose songs were sung by student demonstrators in 1989. Filmed in high definition and presented in 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound (both at the concert and on DVD) the complete concert is presented. It looks and sounds fantastic, in no small part due to the THX mastering, a first for a music DVD. Jarre makes extensive use of new photographic projections on giant 3D inflatable screens, the laser harp, Theremin, and midi flute. The music is varied but would have benefited from band musicians on stage as the music sounds all too similar to the recent "Aero" album apart from some Chinese instrumentation. Jarre looks lonely on stage and recounts a similar track listing from the last 8 years. Highlights include "Voyage to Beijing" as well as the essential "Souvenir of China" and a highly orchestrated "Rendez Vous 2." Straight after the concert in the Forbidden City, Jarre travels by motorbike through the audience to Tian’anmen Sqaure where he played a small number of songs to the expectant Chinese crowd. A great idea to play a second concert, but a missed opportunity to play some better tracks like "Eldorado" or "Chronologie 4." Instead of remaking Edith Piaf’s "La Foule" in Chinese, a better choice might have an adaptation of Jarre’s own "C’est La Vie." The package includes a photo gallery and commentary from the composer. The making-of documentary is the icing on the cake, showing how hands-on Jarre is with all aspects of production, from trimming some trees to the lighting design. The included live CD album doesn’t add anything for those who have already bought the Aero album. Jarre’s work deserves to be on the DVD format and this is a highly presented premiere from a special event. --Colin Neal

  • Lies and Deceit - Five Films by Claude Chabrol [Limited Edition] [Blu-ray] [Region Free]Lies and Deceit - Five Films by Claude Chabrol | Blu Ray | (21/02/2022) from £50.98   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Too often overlooked and undervalued, Claude Chabrol was the first of the Cahiers du Cinema critics to release a feature film and would be among the most prolific. The sneaky anarchist of the French New Wave, he embraced genre as a means of lifting the lid on human nature. Nothing is sacred and nothing is certain in the films of Claude Chabrol: anything can be corrupted, and usually will be. The hidden meaness of provincial life is at the heart of Cop Au Vin (Poulet au vinaigre), as deaths and disappearances intersect around the attempt by a corrupt syndicate of property developers to force a disabled woman and her son from their home. Actor Jean Poiret would prove so compelling as the laconic Detective Inspector Lavardin good cop/bad cop all in one that the sequel would be titled after him. Inspector Lavardin sees the titular detective investigating the murder of a wealthy and respected catholic author, renowned for his outspoken views against indecency, whose body is found naked and dead on the beach. In Madame Bovary, Chabrol directs one of his greatest collaborators, actress Isabelle Huppert, in perhaps the definitive depiction of Flaubert's classic heroine. Meanwhile Betty, adapted from the novel of the same name by Maigret author Georges Simenon, is a scathing attack on the uppermiddle classes, featuring an extraordinary performance by Marie Trintignant as a woman spiraling into alcoholism, but fighting to redefine herself. Finally, in Torment (L'enfer) Chabrol picks up a project abandoned by Henri Georges Clouzot, in which a husband's jealousy and suspicion of his wife drive him to appalling extremes. Francois Cluzet and Emmanuelle Beart give career best performances as the husband and wife tearing each other apart. With brand new digital restorations, this inaugural Arrow Video collection of Claude Chabrol on Bluray brings together a wealth of passionate contributors and archival extras to shed fresh light on the films and the filmmaker. Dark, witty, ruthless, mischievous: if you've never seen Chabrol before, you're in for a treat. If you have, they've never looked better.
