For his first unsuccessful foray in drift racing Shaun unknowingly takes on D.K. the ""Drift King "" with ties to the Yakuza the Japanese crime machine.   Fast & Furious feels like something of a reunion for the popular franchise. After neither filled out the starring roles in the third film, Tokyo Drift, both Vin Diesel and Paul Walker returned to the franchise for this fourth, and between them managed to power it to become the most successful in the series to date. With Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster also returning, Fast & Furious goes back to the streets where the series started, as once-rivals Diesel and Walker face, for the first time, a shared enemy. This, of course, is just the necessary groundwork before all concerned can jump into a series of impressive vehicles and drive them really, really quickly. Which, of course, they do. It’s brilliantly shot, too, with razor-sharp editing, fast pacing and some outstanding camerawork that leaves you feeling at the very heart of the action. There’s not a great script underpinning it all, and a few more action sequences wouldn’t hurt, but the slower moments are ably carried by the returning cast. It’s hard to work out whether Fast & Furious needed Diesel and Walker the most, or whether the actors themselves needed the film, but marrying them all together really does pay dividends. Naturally enough, there’s scope left behind for a fifth film, which given the major success that Fast & Furious deservedly enjoyed is no threat whatsoever. It might not be anywhere near the most intelligent film you’ll see in your life, but it’s a movie that knows what it wants to do, and has a great deal of fun doing it. More, please… --Jon Foster

  Reputedly based on an incident in the life of its screenwriter, Ingmar Bergman, Faithless is a powerful film that investigates the consequences of adultery, betrayal and grief and the long-term implications for everyone involved. Directed by Bergman's former muse and actress-turned-director, Liv Ullman, the story begins when an old man who lives by the sea, just like Bergman himself, ransacks his memories for material for his writing. He conjures up the beautiful Marianne (Lena Endre) who recounts a major turning point in her life: her affair with her husband's best friend. Her story is captured both in flashback and through Marianne's dialogue, as the camera lingers on her expressive face and his rapt, silent countenance. Not surprisingly the story is an intense and convoluted one and what ensues is a tale of guilt, pain and enduring damage as "simple things become complicated". The remote shore-side confessional location adds to the mystery: just what is their relationship? Is Marianne a figment of his imagination? As the film progresses, the truth begins to dawn. Lena Endre gives a vividly emotional performance, particularly during the poignant scenes concerning her beautiful but increasingly withdrawn daughter (luminescently acted by Michelle Gylemo). Without seeming to judge her, Endre brilliantly portrays a woman who knows that what she is doing is wrong, but does it all the same. The rawness of the erupting emotions is reinforced by an almost total lack of background music and the film becomes ever more involving to watch, even if the key characters seem to have brought about their misfortune themselves. If there is a weakness here it is that the performances of the men are somewhat overshadowed. Lover David, enigmatically portrayed by Krister Henrekssen, looks older than his allocated years and his motivations are unclear; Thomas Hanzon, playing Markus the charismatic husband, seems too restrained in his role and the viewer longs for him to do something wrong to justify his wife's affair. When he eventually does, the ramifications are enormous. Faithless is riveting and very much in keeping with the Bergman oeuvre, here expressed through the sensitive, restrained direction of Liv Ullman. --Christina McLoughlin

  Fallen Angels was originally planned as one section of director Wong Kar-Wai's best-known film, Chungking Express, but eventually it grew into its own distinct and delirious shape. In many ways, it may be the better film, a dark, frantic fun-house ride through Hong Kong's night-time world. Part of the film is a love story between two people who have barely met: a young, ultra-hip hit man (Leon Lai) and the dreamy operative (Michele Reis) who plans his jobs. Much of the movie is given over to a very strange subplot about a manic mute (Takeshi Kaneshiro) who goes on bizarre nocturnal prowls through a closed food market--like almost everything else in Wong's films, this is antic, stylish and oddly touching, all at the same time. It must be said that, also like Wong's other work, Fallen Angels is fragmented and oblique to the point of occasional incomprehensibility, but then suddenly something wild or wonderful happens, such as the moment when the killer leaves the scene of a spectacular shooting and is promptly waylaid by a cheerful old school chum on a public bus. These coups--whether lyrical, violent or simply "how on earth did they get that shot?"--are tossed off by Wong and cinematographer Christopher Doyle with all the cool of the hired killer, as though the movie were a cigarette dangling from a pair of oh-so-casual lips. This is exactly why so many otherwise calm critics fell all over themselves in hailing Wong Kar-Wai as one of the most exciting filmmakers of his generation. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com
