  • Waxwork [1986]Waxwork | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

In Waxwork a waxwork museum appears overnight in an American small town and sinister showman David Warner invites a group of typical teens to a midnight party. However, as expected, the place is home to nasty secrets, and the blundering kids find themselves transported via the exhibits into the presence of "the 18 most evil men in history". What this means is that the film gets to trot out gory vignettes featuring such horror staples as Count Dracula (played inaptly with designer stubble and a Clint croak by ex-Tarzan Miles O'Keefe), the Marquis de Sade, an anonymous werewolf with floppy bunny ears (John Rhys-Davies in human form) and the Mummy. Nerdy hero Zach Galligan appeals to wheelchair-bound monster fighter Patrick MacNee for help. Waxwork is strictly a film buff's movie--with Warner and MacNee turning in knowingly camp performances, and references to everything from Crimes of Passion to Little Shop of Horrors cluttering up its very straggly story line. It's not without ragged charms, though the tone veers between comic and sick (the de Sade scene, although inexplicit, features some lurid dialogue) more or less at random. The effects are likewise variable, and in any case rather fudged by direction, which frequently fails to point up the gags properly. It winds up with a scrappy Blazing Saddles-style fight between the forces of Good and a whole pack of monsters, and the budget runs out before the climactic burning-down-the-waxworks scene. The episodic approach echoes the old Amicus omnibus horrors (Dr Terror's House of Horrors, The House that Dripped Blood etc.), and various cameos allow director Anthony Hickox to parody/emulate the styles of Hammer films, Night of the Living Dead and Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. On the DVD: It's a nice-looking and sounding print, but fullscreen format. The only extras are filmographies taken from the IMDB and the trailer.--Kim Newman

  • The Girls From Liberty X - TonedThe Girls From Liberty X - Toned | DVD | (24/11/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Another pop band, another set of female celebrities, another fitness title, and this is all beginning to sound bland and forgettable. But The Girls from Liberty X--Toned is a cool surprise. With a beach location, a night setting, and club beats by Liberty X producers Gold Dust this dance-led workout has a lot going for it. Choreographer Kardy Laguda kicks straight into a funky warm up, while the three Liberty X girls concentrate on the moves rather than distracting with the usual inane celebrity comment. Dressed simply in trainers, shorts and tank tops, with hair pulled back (as it turns out to avoid going frizzy from the sea water splashes), they are perfect showcases for a workout that is more of a coordination challenge than a fitness marathon. The warm up builds up the sexy moves in preparation for the main workout. The pace ups significantly for the core session and, as Laguna throws in more and more moves and details, the non-dance literate could get lost. The final cool down is a chilled-out wind down with some good leg stretches. Whilst this isn't pitched at the serious fitness fanatic, it's certainly not one for the calorie counters lacking in body confidence. Enjoyable if you've got attitude. On the DVD: The Girls from Liberty X--Toned DVD features a behind-the-scenes extra that, in contrast to the cool, measured, funky night workout, reveals a down-to-earth working day. It's a chance to see the stunning Marbella location, the stage being built on the beach, and the girls taking the waves and the prospect of being soaked in their stride. You'll appreciate the workout more if you watch this first. --Lorna V

Smoke (Dir. Wayne Wang 1995): Departing from the conventions of Hollywood story-telling Smoke is constructed like an emotional jigsaw puzzle: pieces interweave and interconnect to form an intricate whole. Unrelated characters - a cigar store manager (Harvey Keitel) who has taken photographs in front of his store at the same hour every day for 14 years; a novelist (William Hurt) unable to go on writing after his wife is killed in a random act of street violence; a man (Forest Whitaker) who ran away from his past and tries to start over after accidentally killing his wife. These characters amongst others making their way through the lonely urban landscape might seem to have little in common. But in the couse of this motion picture they cross paths by chance and end up changing each other's lives in indelible ways. Blue in the Face (Dir. Wayne Wang & Paul Auster 1995): The companion film to Smoke Blue In The Face is about a motley crew of characters whose lives intersect and collide at a corner cigar shop in Brooklyn managed by Augie Wren (Harvey Keitel). More of a neighbourhood institution then a money-making proposition the shop may soon be a memory as the owner is thinking of selling it to a health food chain. The neighbourhood is on hand to give their say - in a series of hilarious situations they talk until they are blue in the face in this movie about relationships the city and sex.

Howard Hawks 1932): Generally regarded to be the best - and most brutal - of the classic gangster films the original Scarface tells the story of orginised crime's pinch on the city of Chicago during prohibition. Paul Muni plays Tony Carmonte an ambitious hood with a Napoleonic urge to fight his way to number one gang boss. When the last of the old-style crime bosses is brutally slain down the finger is pointed at Tony and Johnny Loro a rival gangster. However Tony's desire to move up the ladder is about to put him in the firing line of his peers and the police. Produced and directed by the mercurial Howard Hawks Scarface is the movie which established both Paul Muri and his coin flipping aide George Raft as major Hollywood stars. Scarface (Dir. Brian De Palma 1983): Al Pacino gives an unforgettable performance as Tony Montana one of the most ruthless gangsters ever depicted on film in this gripping cult crime epic inspired by the 1932 classic of the same title.
