Sit-com favourites John Alderton and Robin Nedwell share the role of a homeless writer with a highly appropriate pen-name. Along with his many pseudonyms the roguishly charming Mike Upchat has a rare ability to pass himself off as the character which best fits any given situation. And since Mike lives out of a left-luggage locker in Marylebone Station that situation will often require his equally amazing ability to chat his way in and out of any beautiful girl's life usually via the bedroom. But if Mike Upchat isn't the first Mike Upchat then he probably isn't the only Mike Upchat... A playful inventive sitcom penned by Billy Liar creator Keith Waterhouse The Upchat Line appeared in 1977 with its equally successful sequel airing the following year. In a twist ingeniously encompassing Alderton's departure Robin Nedwell plays the man who inherits the Upchat persona when Mike raffles the key to his left-luggage locker. Both series are included on this set.

Adapted from Arthur Pinero's relentlessly popular stage farce The Magistrate Those Were the Days was a perfect early vehicle for the comedic brilliance of Will Hay. Hay's feature-length debut is a typically entertaining study of the upstanding but ineffectual magistrate Mr Poskett while a youthful John Mills is the 20-year-old stepson who must pretend to be 15 to preserve the secret of his mother's falsified age; Angela Baddeley and veteran character-comedians Claude Allister H.F. Maltby and George Graves are among an impressive supporting cast. Presented in a brand-new digital transfer from the original film elements this rare cinematic gem - directed by former variety star Thomas Bentley - notably includes a wonderful evocation of the atmosphere of a 1890s music hall with Lily Morris and Harry Bedford among a number of leading acts featured. • Touch Of Evil [1958]Touch Of Evil | DVD | (10/11/2003) from £7.63   |  Saving you £2.36 (30.93%)   |  RRP £9.99

Considered by many to be the greatest B movie ever made, the original-release version of Orson Welles' film noir masterpiece Touch of Evil was, ironically, never intended as a B movie at all--it merely suffered that fate after it was taken away from writer-director Welles, then reedited and released in 1958 as the second half of a double feature. Time and critical acclaim would eventually elevate the film to classic status (and Welles' original vision was meticulously followed for the film's 1998 restoration), but for four decades this original version stood as a testament to Welles' directorial genius. From its astonishing, miraculously choreographed opening shot (lasting over three minutes) to Marlene Dietrich's classic final line of dialogue, this sordid tale of murder and police corruption is like a valentine for the cinematic medium, with Welles as its love-struck suitor. As the corpulent cop who may be involved in a border-town murder, Welles faces opposition from a narcotics officer (Charlton Heston) whose wife (Janet Leigh) is abducted and held as the pawn in a struggle between Heston's quest for truth and Welles' control of carefully hidden secrets. The twisting plot is wildly entertaining (even though it's harder to follow in this original version), but even greater pleasure is found in the pulpy dialogue and the sheer exuberance of the dazzling directorial style. --Jeff Shannon

  • Hetty Wainthropp Investigates - Series 1Hetty Wainthropp Investigates - Series 1 | DVD | (06/04/2009) from £13.89   |  Saving you £9.09 (83.39%)   |  RRP £19.99

Mystery buffs will find Hetty Wainthropp to be delightful and uniquely entertaining company. Hetty has just turned 60, but she is not about to "ride serene into the evening tide," as her doting husband so poetically puts it. "I'm not 60 and I never will be," Hetty proclaims. "I'm not a senior citizen." Hetty wants to matter, so she gets a job at her local Lancashire post office. But that wouldn't make for much of a miniseries. Before you can say "cheeky monkey," she has involved herself in a deadly case of pension-fund fraud, and made a splash on the front pages as a "Super Gran Sleuth." The redoubtable Patricia Routledge, best known as Hyacinth Bucket on the beloved Keeping Up Appearances), does lovely work as Hetty, who first appeared in David Cook's 1986 novel, Missing Persons (Cook co-wrote the six first-season episodes contained here). Hetty is not as quaint as Miss Marple, nor her cases as seamy as Jane Tennison's Prime Suspect mysteries. She is a formidable character in her own right, opening her own private detective agency, and recruiting a 17-year-old shoplifter (Dominic Monaghan from the Lord of the Rings trilogy) to be her "devoted sidekick." A rogue cop, a roving arsonist, and other unsavory characters are no match for the woman who won't rest until things add up. As one police inspector grudgingly admits, "She's an extraordinary woman. She's no Miss Marple, but..." But, indeed. --Donald Liebenson
