  • Shackleton [2002]Shackleton | DVD | (14/04/2003) from £6.99   |  Saving you £3.00 (42.92%)   |  RRP £9.99

Shackleton is not a biopic of the great Anglo-Irish explorer but a dramatisation of the failed trans-Antarctic expedition of 1914-16. As written and directed by Charles (Longtitude) Sturridge the production, filmed on real ice floes in Greenland, stays remarkably close to the facts, capturing the look of the surviving expedition photos of Frank Hurley (collected in the book South With Endurance) with great fidelity. Kenneth Branagh makes no attempt at an authentic accent but otherwise gives a powerful impression of a most commanding personality. When the expedition ship Endurance became locked in the Antarctic ice Shackleton vowed to bring every man home alive, and against virtually impossible odds, including a 700-mile journey in an open boat through some of the worst seas in the world, he did just that. This superlative mini-series realises the story with production values and cinematography which would not disgrace a big-budget feature (Hurley's own 1919 documentary film can be seen on video in South). Intense physical drama, strong performances and Adrian Johnston's fine score combine here to deeply moving effect, marred only a little by a rushed conclusion. With Roland Huntford, author of the definitive Shackleton biography, as production advisor, this easily stands as the benchmark for all future comparable films. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Simon Schama - A History of Britain : The Complete Series [2000]Simon Schama - A History of Britain : The Complete Series | DVD | (18/11/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £59.99

Stretching from the Stone Age to the year 2000, Simon Schama's Complete History of Britain does not pretend to be a definitive chronicle of the turbulent events which buffeted and shaped the British Isles. What Schama does do, however, is tell the story in vivid and gripping narrative terms, free of the fustiness of traditional academe, personalising key historical events by examining the major characters at the centre of them. Not all historians would approve of the history depicted here as shaped principally by the actions of great men and women rather than by more abstract developments, but Schama's way of telling it is a good deal more enthralling as a result. Schama successfully gives lie to the idea that the history of Britain has been moderate and temperate, passing down the generations as stately as a galleon, taking on board sensible ideas but steering clear of sillier, revolutionary ones. Nonsense. Schama retells British history the way it was--as bloody, convulsive, precarious, hot-blooded and several times within an inch of haring off onto an entirely different course. Schama seems almost to delight in the goriness of history. Themes returned to repeatedly include the wars between the Scots and the Irish and the Catholic/Protestant conflicts--only the Irish question remains unresolved by the new millennium. As Britain becomes a constitutional monarchy, Schama talks less of Kings and Queens but of poets and idea-makers like Orwell. Still, with his pungent, direct manner and against an evocative visual and aural backdrop, Schama makes history seem as though it happened yesterday, the bloodstains not yet dry. On the DVD: The Complete History of Britain extras are generously packaged on a separate disc and include the original score and a Simon Schama biography. There's an interesting "promotional message" to camera in which Schama explains the role of a cab driver, Wally, in inspiring the series, along with an interview with Mark Lawson in which Schama stresses the deliberate subjectivity of these programmes and an inaugural BBC History lecture in which he defends TV's ability to transpose history to camera. --David Stubbs

Journalist, screenwriter, novelist, soldier, filmmaker Samuel Fuller was one of American cinema's most prolific and multi-faceted talents. However, the films based on Fuller's early work as a screenwriter remain under appreciated. It Happened in Hollywood: Regarded by Fuller as his ˜first real Hollywood credit', the film has a now-familiar premise: the silent film star who finds they are unable to make the transition to talkies. Blending comedy, romance, action, and a playful self-reflexive streak, the film established Fuller in Hollywood. Adventure in Sahara: Fuller takes full story credit on this rip-roaring adventure yarn inspired he claimed by Victor Hugo, Beau Geste, and Mutiny on the Bounty. Power of the Press: Drawing on Fuller's own experiences as young newspaperman and journalist, this crime drama is a passionate cry for freedom of speech and expression. The film also features Fuller's first fully formed and vital female heroine in the shape of the impassioned Edwina (Gloria Dickson). Special Features: High Definition remasters of all three films Original mono audio It Happened in Hollywood (1937, 68 mins): Richard Dix and Fay Wray star as big-screen actors adapting to the coming of sound in this witty exposé of Tinseltown, directed by Harry Lachman from a screenplay co-written by Samuel Fuller Adventure in Sahara (1938, 57 mins): action-packed drama of revenge and honour, starring Paul Kelly and Lorna Gray, directed by D Ross Lederman from a story by Fuller Power of the Press (1943, 64 mins): Lew Landers directs this hard-edged drama about corruption within the newspaper industry, based on a story by Fuller and starring Guy Kibbee, Lee Tracy and Gloria Dickson All-Star Party (2018, 6 mins): who's who of the ˜stars' and their impersonators in the climactic party scene from It Happened in Hollywood Sam Fuller's Search for Truth with Tim Robbins (2009, 7 mins): the celebrated actor explores Fuller's time as a reporter Image gallery: publicity photography and promotional material for all three films New and improved English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing

  • Devil's Own [1997]Devil's Own | DVD | (01/10/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Any movie starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford has got to be worth seeing, right? That's as close to a guarantee as this well-meaning thriller ever gets, however, and the talents of Pitt and Ford are absolutely vital in making any sense out of this dramatically muddled scenario. Ostensibly the movie's about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) who escapes from British troops in Belfast and travels to New York City, where he stays in the home of a seasoned cop (Ford) who has no idea of the terrorist's true identity. (Why a veteran cop would host a complete stranger in his home is one of those shaky details you're better off not thinking about.) But while Pitt's passionate character waits to make an arms deal for his IRA compatriots back in Ireland, The Devil's Own conveniently avoids any detailed understanding of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing instead on the cop's moral dilemma when he discovers that his young guest is a terrorist. The film is superbly acted, and overall it's quite worthwhile, but don't look to it for an abundance of plot logic or an in-depth understanding of Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland. (For that, take a look at In the Name of the Father or the underrated historical biopic Michael Collins.) --Jeff Shannon.
