| RRP Journalist, screenwriter, novelist, soldier, filmmaker Samuel Fuller was one of American cinema's most prolific and multi-faceted talents. However, the films based on Fuller's early work as a screenwriter remain under appreciated. It Happened in Hollywood: Regarded by Fuller as his first real Hollywood credit', the film has a now-familiar premise: the silent film star who finds they are unable to make the transition to talkies. Blending comedy, romance, action, and a playful self-reflexive streak, the film established Fuller in Hollywood. Adventure in Sahara: Fuller takes full story credit on this rip-roaring adventure yarn inspired he claimed by Victor Hugo, Beau Geste, and Mutiny on the Bounty. Power of the Press: Drawing on Fuller's own experiences as young newspaperman and journalist, this crime drama is a passionate cry for freedom of speech and expression. The film also features Fuller's first fully formed and vital female heroine in the shape of the impassioned Edwina (Gloria Dickson). The Sons Of Katie Elder | DVD | (06/06/2005)
from £4.96
| Saving you £8.03 (161.90%)
| RRP John Wayne recovered from his first bout of cancer to appear in 1965's The Sons of Katie Elder as the brother of Dean Martin, Earl Holliman and Michael Anderson Jr. All four characters are wandering souls prone to trouble, but after the funeral of their frontier mother, they set out to avenge her death. Directed by Henry Hathaway (Wayne's director on True Grit), the film moves like a conventional, latter-day Western, with good performances from Wayne and Martin, who'd already costarred with the Duke in Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo. There's also nice support from Dennis Hopper (who had a legendary conflict with Hathaway on this film), Strother Martin and George Kennedy. --Tom Keogh

| RRP The third film from Claude Chabrol and his first in colour Double Tour is both a characteristically suspenseful thriller and a cruel portrait of bourgeois life. His wife the redoubtable Thrse Marcoux (Madeleine Robinson) is determined to avoid a scandal at any price even to the extent of breaking off her daughter's engagement when she learns that her future son-in-law Laszlo (Belmondo) has been sympathising with her husband. Then the unthinkable happens - Lda is found dead. But who is the killer? Devil's Own | DVD | (01/10/1999)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Any movie starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford has got to be worth seeing, right? That's as close to a guarantee as this well-meaning thriller ever gets, however, and the talents of Pitt and Ford are absolutely vital in making any sense out of this dramatically muddled scenario. Ostensibly the movie's about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) who escapes from British troops in Belfast and travels to New York City, where he stays in the home of a seasoned cop (Ford) who has no idea of the terrorist's true identity. (Why a veteran cop would host a complete stranger in his home is one of those shaky details you're better off not thinking about.) But while Pitt's passionate character waits to make an arms deal for his IRA compatriots back in Ireland, The Devil's Own conveniently avoids any detailed understanding of the Northern Ireland conflict, focusing instead on the cop's moral dilemma when he discovers that his young guest is a terrorist. The film is superbly acted, and overall it's quite worthwhile, but don't look to it for an abundance of plot logic or an in-depth understanding of Protestant-Catholic tensions in Northern Ireland. (For that, take a look at In the Name of the Father or the underrated historical biopic Michael Collins.) --Jeff Shannon.
