  The first time that the opening episode of Slim Shady Version II was shown to the public as a prelude to Eminem's live set on the Anger Management tour in America, it received critical acclaim. The point was clear, ran the consensus: by juxtaposing cartoon images of his split personality alongside South Park characters, Marshall Mathers was querying why their anti-social behaviour is satire and his is offensive. More episodes then turned up on the Web leading MTV to commission these nine five-minute shorts in which Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers run around taking drugs, swearing, attempting to have sex and beating up pop stars such as N'Stink and Pristina Gagulera. Sadly, those kind of lame puns are about as funny as it gets. A typical scene runs like this: the boys spot Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and they beat them up. That's it. Worse still, any sense of characterisation that places in context the anger and prejudice of Eminem's recorded work is lost here, leaving dumb and rather ugly misogyny to stand alone. A brief documentary about the making of the shorts is equally as grim and proves that cartoons really shouldn't be made by people with no sense of humour.--Ian Watson

  Small quirky comedy thrillers such as Drowning Mona are one of the things that American cinema does best and far too rarely. Peter Steinfeld's appealing script attracted a solid cast of stars under the direction of newcomer Nick Gomez (whose previous work includes episodes of The Sopranos). It seems that someone has cut Mona's brake cables and she drove to her death by drowning. Bette Midler's Mona manages to make it entirely plausible that almost everyone might have wanted to kill her: from her son's business partner Eddie (Casey Affleck) to her husband's mistress Rona (Jamie Lee Curtis). The local police chief (Danny DeVito), already burdened with subordinates who refer to running away from danger as "securing the perimeter" and the impending marriage of his daughter (Neve Campbell) to the sweet but unreliable Eddie, has to make sense of the farrago of lies and half-truths which is all anyone will tell him. This is an ingenious tightly plotted film which is never too busy to scatter odd little gags at its margins; it's a tall tale, whose complicated telling is half the fun. On the DVD The DVD comes with the theatrical trailer, a director's commentary, interviews with the stars and four deleted scenes. The picture is 1.85:1 anamorphic and the sound is Dolby Surround. --Roz Kaveney

M is an important piece of cinema's past along with a number of Lang's early German works, including Metropolis and Spies. (Lang eventually brought his influence directly to the American cinema in such films as Fury, They Clash by Night and The Big Heat.) M shouldn't be missed. Across a canvas lasting almost three hours director Paul Verhoeven unfolds a saga of friendship, espionage and romance with almost documentary realism--though not as graphically violent as his later American films the torture scenes are intense--crafting a deeply affecting film widely regarded as the greatest ever made in Holland. Comparable recent films such as Enigma (2001) and Charlotte Gray (2002) do not come close. Hauer is brilliant at the heart of what is a detailed and thoughtful drama made with integrity and passion. Co-star Jeroen Krabbé has gone onto a notable career in Hollywood, while Edward Fox and Susan Penhaligon provide more familiar faces for British audiences. The film is shot in Dutch, German and English and subtitled as necessary.   The last film directed by John Cassavetes, Big Trouble reteamed some of the creators of the much funnier The In-laws. But despite another script by Andrew Bergman, and a cast that reunited Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, this comedy doesn't live up to its predecessor. A spoof of Double Indemnity, the film casts Arkin as a nervous insurance agent faced with huge college tuition bills for a trio of sons headed for Yale. To make extra money, he gets involved in a scheme with a woman (Beverly D'Angelo) trying to kill her husband (Falk). That the whole thing turns out to be an adventure in insurance fraud shouldn't come as a surprise. Despite an inconsistent script, the chemistry between Arkin and Falk can still produce the occasional laugh. --Marshall Fine

  Kiss: The Second Coming is a band-sanctioned hagiography focusing on the profit-minded 1996 tour that found the 70s heavy-metal icons back in full-bore makeup and costumes for a time-trip back to their Alive II heyday. At 122 minutes, Second Coming is an hour too long for all but die-hard devotees, and peaks with its opening recap of the band's early fire-breathing years. After that, it's a quick run-through of good-days-gone-bad clichés before the long haul of backstage shots and gee-it's-great-to-be-back-on-the-playground testimonials takes over. Little insight is present, though there is a bit of comic myth-mocking during a sequence demonstrating the inflation of the stage show's gargantuan inflatable figures of Gene, Paul, Peter, and Ace.
