Excellent sound effects greatly enhance the film and Dvorak's New World Symphony played by the London Symphony Orchestra makes a pleasant change from films' current dependence on pop hits. Hugo the mighty dragon, Otto the nasty ferret and the sword fight between the feuding kings will hold the attention of those brothers of Barbie fans who are less than enthusiastic about watching this film, but essentially this is a little girl's film and the outrageously pink castle, the magical fashion show before the masked ball and the fairytale wedding will make it a firm favourite for its intended audience. --Tracey Hogan.

It could be that the notional subject matter--the psychological collapse of George III, later attributed to the neurological disease porphyria--implies a profound, analytical approach of the kind associated with Oliver Sachs. However, as the screenplay was written by Alan Bennett, based upon his stage play The Madness of George III, what we have here is a typically shrewd, elegant and poignant depiction of how the world seems when viewed by someone who sees things in their own unique way. And as it is by Bennett, who allows himself a brief, bumbling cameo appearance, the dialogue is of course scalpel-sharp throughout and often extremely moving.The historical accuracy is strong on detail, but there's an element of artistic license, such as the depiction of HRH's apparent partial recovery at the close of the film (although the scene itself, in which Hawthorne's befuddled monarch rallies himself to address his subjects, is a joy). It turns out, however, that a geek among them is in fact a high priest of an ancient Aztec religion, who wishes to resurrect the mummy in order to punish his peers for years of social neglect. Such a synopsis might conceal what this film actually is: a mummy waddling around what looks like a villa (presumably the producer's house) and killing the few so-called characters to whom we have been introduced. The six murders are directed without any suspense or shock factor and, more criminally for a low-budget horror film, there is not even any tongue-in-cheek humour or over-the-top gore. Admittedly, the mummy itself is very entertaining: portly, and with a fluffy, Jack Charlton side-parting, it looks like someone has buried a close friend's dad and dug them up two weeks later.
