Shout At The Devil - (Full Theatrical Version) | DVD | (17/04/2019)

| RRP Shout at the Devil was Roger Moore's second starring role in an adaptation of one Wilbur Smith's bestselling African adventures (the first being 1974's Gold, also directed by Peter Hunt). Taking its mixture of comedy and drama, and part of its plot, from The African Queen the movie finds Moore's decent, upright Englishman teamed with Lee Marvin--in a variation on his Cat Ballou drunken brawler comedy persona--fighting the Germans in colonial East Africa at the beginning of the Great War. Moore plays it straight and makes a most heroic and handsome matinee idol hero. Produced between Moore's second and third outings as Bond, Shout at the Devil was staffed with various 007 regulars, including Hunt who was had edited the first three and directed On Her Majesty's Secret Service, title designer Maurice Binder and director John Glen. It even has a ticking clock-gigantic explosion finale. This is an exciting, beautifully shot escapade which deserves to be much better known. On the DVD: The original Panavision 2.35:1 image is incorrectly letterboxed at around 2:1, cropping so much picture information that the credits disappear at either side of the screen. The print used is of very variable quality, with some scenes looking fine, others washed out and lacking detail, with long shots often being slightly out of focus. Adding to the problems is the abysmal digital encoding which, despite anamorphic enhancement, has left many scenes swarming with compression artefacts. The sound is adequate mono. Unfortunately this disc uses a heavily re-edited and shortened version of the film--cut from 147 to 119 minutes following poor reviews--and the losses in continuity, especially in the early part of the film are very noticeable. The extras are the original trailer, which reveals the entire plot right up to and including the ending, comprehensive filmographies of Marvin, Moore and Hunt, and a seven-minute compilation of posters and publicity stills set to the main themes from Maurice Jarre's score. --Gary S Dalkin

Martin Scorsese Presents The Blues: A Musical Journey | DVD | (12/12/2008)
from £19.99
| Saving you £3.00 (15.01%)
| RRP It may have been underrated when first broadcast, but executive producer Martin Scorsese's homage to the blues is a truly significant, if imperfect, achievement. "Musical journey" is an apt description, as Scorsese and the six other directors responsible for these seven approximately 90-minute films follow the blues--the foundation of jazz, soul, R&B, and rock & roll--from its African roots to its Mississippi Delta origins, up the river to Memphis and Chicago, then to New York, the United Kingdom, and beyond. Some of the films (like Wim Wenders's The Soul of a Man and Charles Burnett's Warming by the Devil's Fire) use extensive fictional film sequences, generally to good effect. There's also plenty of documentary footage, interviews, and contemporary studio performances recorded especially for these films. The last are among the best aspects of the DVDs, as the bonus material features the set's only complete tunes. Lou Reed's "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean" and the ElektriK Mud Kats' (with Chuck D. of Public Enemy) hip-hop-cum-traditional updating of Muddy Waters's "Mannish Boy" are among the best of them; on the other hand, a rendition of "Cry Me a River" by Lulu (?!) is a curious choice, even with Jeff Beck on hand. The absence of lengthier vintage clips, meanwhile, is the principal drawback. For that reason alone, Clint Eastwood's Piano Blues is the best of the lot; a musician himself, Eastwood simply lets the players play, which means we get extensive file footage of the likes of Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, and Nat "King" Cole, as well as new performances by Ray Charles, Dr. John, and others. Overall, this is a set to savor, a worthwhile investment guaranteed to grow on you over the course of repeated viewings. --Sam Graham

| RRP This unprecedented collaboration between the BBC and the Royal Navy gripped the nation with a fascinating insight into the lives of seamen on tour across the globe. From hot shot new Commander Glenn (Bryan Marshall) right down to the lower decks, the series follows the personal and professional lives of all the crewmembers as they sail across the world tackling dangerous sea-faring missions. Real Royal Marine Commandos mix with a cast that includes James Cosmo (Game of Thrones, Braveheart) and Andrew Burt (Emmerdale) as the series, shot on location aboard the HMS Phoebe, blurs the lines between drama and documentary. Scottish Naval Officer and screenwriter Ian Mackintosh MBE teamed up with producer Anthony Coburn who wanted to create a series ‘that would do for the Navy what Z-Cars had done for the police.’ In this series the HMS Hero’s new captain is tested when he must navigate an Arctic ice field, Commander Glenn must choose between doing his duty or repaying a debt, Commander Nialls returns to the Hero and a court martial seems imminent when a cruiser suffers friendly fire from a naval jet.

from £20.00
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Yep, that ugly toy with the killer's instinct is back for a fifth round of irreverent bloodshed in Seed of Chucky. Chucky and his plastic partner Tiffany are reanimated by their child, a gentle doll of indeterminate gender who'd prefer that his parents stopped their knife-wielding ways. No such luck. In an attempt at irony that also includes John Waters as a tabloid reporter, Jennifer Tilly (who also voices Tiffany) is asked to play herself, a B-grade actress tired of being stuck in a movie filled with murderous dolls. She courts rap star Redman, playing himself, when she hears he's looking for someone to play the mother of Jesus in a new film. Chuck, Tiffany, and spawn naturally interrupt such ridiculous plans. Writer/director Don Mancini has the trio doing things you have to see to believe, including a vivid disembowelment and a human impregnation featuring a turkey baster filled with, you guessed it, the seed of Chucky. It's junk, sure, and tension-free, but Tilly's willing self-debasement is fairly jaw-dropping. If you're so inclined, her shameless decision to play along may be reason enough to suffer the consequences. --Steve Wiecking, Amazon.com

from £18.97
| Saving you £1.02 (5.38%)
| RRP Kids will love this sweeping story of two brothers whose plane crashes on a mysterious island called Dinotopia, where human beings live in harmony with dinosaurs--the herbivores, anyway. The carnivores present a problem, as the humans' defences against them--a mystical power source called sunstones--are losing strength. As they try to save the island, Carl and David (Tyron Leitso and Wentworth Miller) struggle not only with tyrannosaurs and prehistoric crocodiles, but also with repressive Dinotopian traditions and a scheming malcontent (David Thewlis) who stirs up all kinds of trouble. Meanwhile, they also wrestle with each other over the lovely daughter of the mayor of Waterfall City (Katie Carr). The pacifist ideals of Dinotopia are refreshing, but it's the special effects that will hook viewers: riding on the backs of brachiosaurs, flying atop pteranadons, arguing in court with triceratops and ankylosaurs. Anyone fascinated with dinosaurs (and who isn't?) will enjoy this whimsical fantasy. A host of British character actors also helps keep the human side of this four-hour mini-series lively; Alice Krige (also known as the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact) gets a much more benevolent role here. --Bret Fetzer
