At the height of his fame in the 1950s he was Britain's most popular film star and had appeared in a string of box office hits including Genevieve (1953) Doctor in the House (1954) Reach for the Sky (1956) and A Night to Remember (1958). Like many British actors he commuted between film and theatre and steadily became of or Britain's most treasured actors. This 8 disc collection celebrates some of his greatest work. Films include: Chance of a Lifetime (1950): The workers in a small plough factory take over the firm but when a large order falls through the old management come back to help out. Genevieve (1953): Two friends race their vintage cars on the annual London to Brighton rally. But once they place a 'friendly' wager on who will win the race the competitive juices start flowing! Genevieve is the name of one of the cars which like her competitor runs into one problem after another. A Night to Remember (1958): Based on the best selling book by Walter Lord this is the true story of the R.M.S. Titanic which struck an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Europe to New York in 1912. The Galloping Major (1951): An elderly pet shop owner who sets up a scheme to buy ""Montana Mist "" a race horse who promises to finish in the money. When the animals are switched at an auction his lifelong dream comes crashing down - unless the old glue horse he has purchased turns out to be more than meets the eye. North West Frontier (1959): Captain Scott (More) is sent by the British Governor in India to rescue a five year old Hindu prince and his American governess (Bacall) when a rebellion breaks out among the tribesmen. Pursued by the abductors the trio commandeer a derelict steam train to take them 300 miles through the mountains to safety... Reach for the Sky (1956): A story of one man's indomitable courage and endurance. As a young sports-loving Pilot Officer Douglas Bader loses both legs in a flying accident. Not only does he overcome his devastating disability; he goes on to become a Battle of Britain ace. Eventually Bader is shot down and imprisoned in Germany. Outbreak | DVD | (11/05/1998)
from £13.56
| Saving you £0.43 (3.17%)
| RRP When Warner Brothers was unable to secure the rights to Richard Preston's terrifying non-fiction book The Hot Zone (purchased by a rival studio), they took the basic idea of a fatal virus on the loose in the US, added Dustin Hoffman and director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) and produced an unusual thriller--a surprise hit--called Outbreak. The other picture, slated to star Robert Redford and Jodie Foster, fell through. The premise of Outbreak, which owes something to Elia Kazan's 1950 plague-scare movie, Panic in the Streets, is as terrifying as it is timely. As developers slash their way deeper into the previously unexplored tropical rainforests, they are exposed to radically new forms of life, including diseases, that in these days of commonplace international travel could turn into deadly epidemics almost before we know it. Hoffman's character and his estranged wife (Rene Russo) are disease experts called in to identify the unknown killer, which was carried into the country by an illegally smuggled monkey. The best sequence shows the disease spreading--through recycled air on a passenger jet or a sneeze in a crowded cinema. The final chase is pretty conventional but the cast is terrific, including Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Cuba Gooding Jr., J.T. Walsh and Zakes Mokae. --Jim Emerson

Fierce Creatures | DVD | (14/04/2003)
from £6.24
| Saving you £3.75 (60.10%)
| RRP In an attempt to catch lightning in a bottle, John Cleese wrote Fierce Creatures with the purpose of reuniting the comedic cast of A Fish Called Wanda. Media mogul (Kevin Kline) owns a London zoo. He demands that the park raise more profit, so the new zoo director (Cleese) orders that only dangerous animals be displayed in order to maximize ticket sales. In a dual role, Kline also plays the mogul's son, who plans to run the zoo with the help of displaced employees (including Michael Palin) and zoo programmer Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis). The situation lends itself to comedic confusion and split-second timing, and for a few good laughs the film is a pretty safe bet. It's not as hilarious as A Fish Called Wanda (that's a pretty tall order), but Cleese knows comedy, and his efforts are worth a look. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
Savage Garden - Superstars And Cannonballs: Live On Tour In Australia | DVD | (13/12/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Savage Garden, Australia's hottest export of recent years, are captured here in all their live glory as they hit their hometown of Brisbane in a triumphant sell-out homecoming gig. There is a fair amount of behind-the-scenes footage which serves to back up the roles that the two members of the band have adopted: singer Darren is the outgoing excitable one, attracted like a moth to a flame by the trappings of celebrity, whereas guitarist Daniel is the private and shy one, preferring to stay out of the limelight and just write songs. But with millions of records sold all around the world, sell-out tours, hysterical fans and a string of chart-topping singles, this unlikely pairing proves the old adage that opposites attract. All the hits are here--"To the Moon and Back", "Affirmation", "Truly, Madly Deeply", "The Animal Song" and others--but after a while the visuals do become very samey: with only two of them to look at, and one of them tending to stray away from the spotlight at every available opportunity, the poor cameramen don't have many options. The backdrop to the concert is a huge wall of multi-coloured blocks of lights, apparently based on memories of a trip to Blackpool (but without the rain, chip wrappers and drunken brawls, sadly). It's all very polished, and just a little bit sterile as it fails to recreate the atmosphere of the live experience. However, for those who were there it's a great lasting reminder. The DVD menu allows the viewer to choose multiple camera angles on a select number of tracks. --Helen Marquis
