  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation [1989]National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation | DVD | (24/11/2003) from £7.55   |  Saving you £-4.04 (N/A%)   |  RRP £3.51

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation is the third instalment of the Griswold family saga and a significant improvement over their previous European Vacation. Disaster-prone dad (Chevy Chase) discovers just how dangerous the Christmas season really is as the Griswolds' old-fashioned holiday celebration turns out to be more "Bah! Humbug!" than Christmas cheer. Chase is right at home with the outrageous slapstick and often cheerfully tasteless humour, and John Hughes's script is stuffed full of classic Christmas movie references, but Randy Quaid practically steals the film as the unemployed relative with his malicious grin and mooching lifestyle. Not exactly a holiday classic and a bit spotty, this gag-filled comedy is just obnoxious enough for the Scrooge lurking inside everyone. And fear not, a happy ending awaits all. Watch for future star Juliette Lewis as Chase's teenage daughter. --Sean Axmaker

A key film of the British New Wave Saturday Night And Sunday Morning was a great box-office success - audiences were thrilled by its anti-establishment energy the gritty realism of its setting and most of all by a working-class hero of a fresh and outspoken kind. Based on Alan Sillitoe's largely autobiographical novel the film is set in the grim industrial streets and factories of Nottingham where Arthur Seaton spends his days at a factory bench his Saturday evenings in the local pubs and his Saturday nights with Brenda (Rachel Roberts) wife of a fellow factory worker. Played by Albert Finney with an irresistable animal vitality Arthur is anti-authority (Don't let the bastards grind you down) and unashamedly amoral (What I'm out for is a good time. All the rest is propoganda). With powerful central performances cracking dialogue by Sillitoe and a superb jazz score by Johnny Dankworth Saturday Night And Sunday Morning still stands as a vibrant modern classic.

In 1996, a Doctor Who TV movie starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, was envisioned to launch the franchise into an exciting new chapter. But whilst the film found success in the UK, attempts to freshen up established lore resulted in a decidedly frosty reception from transatlantic audiences. Now, a quarter of a century later, screenwriter Matthew Jacobs prepares to venture back into the legendary sci-fi universe, to reassess his relationship with the franchise and the American fandom who vilified him. Featuring original cast of the controversial movie, including Paul McGann (The Three Musketeers, Queen of the Damned), Eric Roberts (Inherent Vice, The Dark Knight, The Expendables), and Daphne Ashbrook (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), this funny and emotionally perilous documentary not only revisits a pivotal moment in Doctor Who history, but highlights the unity and creative freedom within the fandom, as Jacobs ultimately, and unexpectedly, finds himself a kindred part of this close-knit, yet vast, family of fans.

Dr Alice Roberts (Coast Don't Die Young) travels to the ends of the earth to trace the extraordinary beginnings of the human story in The Human Journey a landmark series for BBC Two. Using the latest genetic climate and archaeological evidence she will discover the five epic routes our ancestors took across the globe and the obstacles and brutal challenges they encountered along the way. She will discover where we came from how our ancestors colonised the world and how their journeys changed us. Today's global population is extraordinarily diverse; yet we all share one thing in common: DNA that tells us one astonishing message - we are all closely related. In this series Alice Roberts will show how most of us descend from a tiny group of men and women who left Africa in a perilous crossing - and then went on to colonise the rest of the world. She will explain how all Europeans living today are descended from just a handful of women why different ethnic groups look the way they do what makes some of us able to tolerate milk and alcohol and why others are great at conserving heat. Alice Roberts will interrogate the evidence to address mysteries including how our ancestors reached Australia without boats and what happened when they came face-to-face with other human species like Homo erectus. She will also explore how they overcame extraordinary challenges - from supervolcanoes to climatic disaster - to become the people we are today.

  • Mexican, The [DVD] [2001]Mexican, The | DVD | (02/07/2006) from £4.97   |  Saving you £15.02 (302.21%)   |  RRP £19.99

Part road film, part romantic comedy, part thriller, and a whole lotta fun, The Mexican could get by on star power alone, but it offers Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and a clever plot full of delightful surprises. It's a thoroughly enjoyable shaggy-dog story in which the downtrodden Jerry Welbach (Pitt) copes with a dual dilemma: his girlfriend Samantha (Roberts) has just dumped him to pursue solo ambitions in Las Vegas, and a manipulative mobster has ordered Jerry to Mexico to retrieve a coveted antique pistol (the "Mexican" of the title) that carries a legacy of legend, death and danger. Jerry soon has his hands full with bandits, bloodshed and a grizzly hound dog that vanishes and reappears with amusing regularity. En route to Vegas, Samantha's taken hostage by a burly assassin (James Gandolfini) who's attached to the gun-fetching scheme and is, in more ways than one, not who he seems to be. Like a good magic act, JH Wyman's original screenplay distracts you from its gaps of logic using unexpected revelations to fuel its strategic vitality. It also provides a wealth of character development, director Gore Verbinski (Mouse Hunt) giving his stellar cast equal time to shine. It hardly matters that Pitt and Roberts spend most of the film apart; their time together is worth waiting for, and the machinations that separate them play out like a cross between vintage Peckinpah and Romancing the Stone. And why is the accursed pistola so valuable? That's just another surprise, setting the stage for the arrival of yet another big-name star, whose motivations are pure in a film full of double-crosses and darkly shaded humour. With a giddy plot such as this, star power is just icing on the cake. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.co.uk

  • The Last Valley [1970]The Last Valley | DVD | (02/04/2001) from £14.24   |  Saving you £-8.25 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

James Clavell's The Last Valley is a heartfelt film of paradise found and lost in the midst of the bloody Thirty Years War, a senseless religious conflict long since degenerated into a rabble of looters preying on peasants. It's also a triumph of passion over style. Michael Caine stars as the Captain, a happily tolerant leader whose army of mercenaries--a mix of Protestants and Catholics--murders, pillages and rapes side by side for whichever faction is paying more at the time. Omar Sharif is Vogel, a lone refugee whose flight from the marauding band leads them all to a beautiful village in the mountains. The Captain and Vogel make an unlikely pair: the shrewd mercenary with the dream of peace, and the philosopher-peasant hanging on to his own life in the face of certain death--and their alliance to preserve this Eden and her people stands in contrast to the soldiers who soon become splintered by greed, lust and religious zealotry. Clavell isn't exactly subtle, but his sense of irony is biting: one Christian soldier is ready to lead a mob in righteous battle after a perceived blaspheme, and in the next scene attacks and rapes an innocent Christian maiden he's sworn to protect. The film falters in clumsy battle scenes and awkward dramatic staging, but Caine's complex characterisation of the guarded Captain and Sharif's haunted performance keep the story alive, and the beautiful photography fixes the film like a jewel into its setting. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com
