When Raoul starts demanding a share of Mary as well, Paul has to take drastic steps. Pleasure Party (1975): Phillipe and Esther live an apparently idyllic life with their daughter Elise. In an attempt to preserve this bliss Phillipe decides that he and Esther should each have affairs being sure to tell each other openly about them. The plan backfires with tragic results as Phillipe becomes engulfed in jealously. The Break Up (1970): Helene Regnier's husband Charles who is mentally ill injures their son Michel in a rage. Charles moves back in with his wealthy and manipulative parents who blame Helene for their son's condition and vow to win custody of Michel. While the boy is in hospital Helene rents a room in a boarding house nearby. The Regniers hire Paul Thomas a family acquaintance who needs money to find dirt on Helene before the court hearing on custody. Paul moves into the boarding house and with the help of his girlfriend Sonia who rarely wears clothes plots to ruin Helene's reputation and then her very life. Cop Au Vin (1985): Based on a novel by Dominique Roulet introduces the character of Inspecteur Lavardin a loner detective whose affable exterior hides a man willing to go to any lengths to find the truth though his tactics are sometimes questionable. A small French town experiences a spate of murders and Lavardin is called in to investigate. He meets withdrawn teenager Louis Cuno a postman who uses his position to gather information to stop a plot to take over his family's property. Louis lives with his overbearing crippled mother whose cruelty spurs Louis to take his amateur sleuth work a bit too far.

  The dominant themes of director Sidney Lumet's distinguished career are in full force in Night Falls on Manhattan, a moral melodrama involving a young district attorney (Andy Garcia) who takes on a career-making case only to uncover his father's possible involvement in pervasive police corruption. Balancing personal ethics and political compromise in a high-wire act of power and its abuse, Lumet relies on dialogue and superb performances (including those by Ron Leibman, Richard Dreyfuss and Lena Olin) to achieve a devastating impact. The script (based on the novel Tainted Evidence by Robert Daley) is too smart and Lumet's direction too sure-footed to fall back on the black-and-white exploits of conventional criminals and their crimes. The movie's moral framework (like that of Lumet's earlier film Q&A) is more realistic, dealing in the grey areas between right and wrong where misdeeds can arise from the best intentions. At the centre of Garcia's dilemma is his father, a seasoned New York cop played so convincingly by Ian Holm that you'd never guess the actor was British. Although it received mixed reviews when released in 1997, Night Falls on Manhattan ranks among Lumet's finest films. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  In Price of Glory a promising young boxer is knocked out of contention thanks to a sleazy manager who cashed out on his potential by pushing him into a big-money fight before he was ready. Thirteen years later that very same boxer, Arturo Ortega (Jimmy Smits), has three sons whom he's training to be boxers too. His schoolteacher wife wants to make sure they get good grades, but Arturo is sure that boxing is their best chance to get out of the barrio. Flash-forward another 10 years, and the training is paying off. The three boys, Jimmy (Clifton Collins Jr.), Sonny (Jon Seda), and especially Johnny (Ernesto Hernández) have grown into smart and talented boxers. Obviously, Arturo is a good and a tough trainer, but the question of whether he's got his own or his sons' best interests at heart arises when a slick promoter (Ron Perlman) offers him big money first for his sons' contracts and then for a series of title fights. Price of Glory does an admirable job of riding that conundrum throughout, offering no easy answers. There is solid acting throughout and it's nice to see such a Latino-heavy cast, but at just over two hours the pace lags and the central themes are repeated one or two too many times. Aside from a late subplot about corruption and violence that comes across as a bit contrived, this is a good family film about boxing. --Andy Spletzer, Amazon.com

  Previously unavailable in its full uncut length, Rainbow Bridge mixes the psychedelia of late 60s counterculture with its foremost musical hero, Jimi Hendrix. Shot a mere three months before the guitar god's untimely death in 1970, the story is built around Hendrix's final live performance at the Rainbow Bridge Occult Meditation Center on Maui. Straddling concert footage of Hendrix (backed by drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Billy Cox) is the story of actress Pat Hartley, as she travels to Hawaii and meets a group trying to establish a new alternative community. What should be immediately noted is that the actual footage of The Jimi Hendrix Experience fills only a fraction of the running time. That said, Hendrix and co deliver suitably exciting renditions of such classics as "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Chile", which will more than satiate passionate Hendrix fans. Elsewhere, there's a plethora of trippy visuals and lots of hippie's droning on about higher consciousness while smoking marijuana (funnily enough). Still, the DVD version has the helpful option of excising all that nonsense. Otherwise, this is a satisfying if unfortunately padded glimpse of a true musical icon. --Danny Graydon
