It's your life. Make every shot count. When Seattle filmmaker Ward Serrill met Bill Resler a college tax professor who moonlights as a girls' basketball coach he didn't realize that he was about to embark on an incredible seven-year journey. Serrill camera in hand followed Resler - who looks more like Santa Claus in sandles than a whistle-blasting high school coach - into the Roosevelt High School gym and soon discovered a group of girls whose unbridled toughness passion and energy he came to call The Heart of the Game. Then one day onto the Roughriders' court (and into the film) walked Darnellia Russell - a tough inner-city girl whose off-court struggles would eventually threaten to crash the star athlete's plans to play college ball and be the first person in her family to get a college education. At the center of The Heart of the Game is Darnellia's unforgettable true story - the loss of her eligibility and her legal battle to get back on court to play the game that means everything to her. With Coach Resler her team and her family standing by her side she takes on enormous personal obstacles as well as the ruling body of high school sports in Washington State. Directed by Serrill this in-depth documentary not only illustrates the hard-charging energy and excitement of the game but also captures the fiercely competitive and extraordinary spirit of a winning team. Featuring narration by multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning artist and actor Chris ""Ludacris"" Bridges (Crash)

A slow burning, yet entirely gripping, mobster film, American Gangster pits Denzel Washington’s Frank Lucas against Russell Crowe’s law enforcer Richie Roberts. Spread over a necessarily prolonged running time, their story is then brutally, expertly, told. And while American Gangster isn’t in the league of prime Scorsese and Coppolla classics (such as Goodfellas and The Godfather), it’s the nearest we’ve come in quite some time to something of that ilk. It’s all based on a true story, which does mean you need to forgive it some of its obvious narrative conventions, yet this also lends it a gravitas that the film eagerly makes the most of. It’s great too to see British director Ridley Scott tackling meatier material again. This is the man, after all, who gave us Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator, and he duly delivers with American Gangster. His finest work it isn’t, but an engrossing, explosive and hard-as-nails drama it absolutely is. What’s more, American Gangster is powered by two of the finest leading men working in Hollywood right now, and it’s terrific to see Washington and Crowe on top form here. And while in cinematic terms it’s hardly a film that treads new ground, it’s nonetheless a proper, grown-up and engrossing movie, and a very good one at that. --Jon Foster

The publicity campaign surrounding The Outlaw's release was a masterpiece. Armed with stills of 19-year-old Jane Russell revealing a remarkable dcolletage (while stopping to pick up a pair of milk pails!) Producer/Director Howard Hughes spent tens of thousands of dollars purposely to agitate the censors and arouse public indignation. He released the film independently in San Francisco in 1943 after United Artists refused to distribute it; it was quickly closed down by civic groups.
