This is a dramatic exploration of the life and works of Franz Schubert. Featuring excerpts from many of his compositions the central narrative occurs during Schubert''s hospitalization for syphilis the contraction of which was both a consequence of his darker inclinations and a spur to some of his greatest work. As the doctors diagnose Schubert''s symptoms identify their cause and administer treatment the composer conducts his own internal imaginative examination a sometimes delirious and dreamlike evocation of the moments and music from his past life. The characters he recalls are his maverick friend and 'Svengali'' Franz von Schober his authoritarian father his illustrious but conformist patron Michael Vogl and his unfulfilled love Karoline Esterhazy.

  • Callan - Series 1 - Part 3 Of 3 - Episodes 7 - 9 [1970]Callan - Series 1 - Part 3 Of 3 - Episodes 7 - 9 | DVD | (03/09/2001) from £11.92   |  Saving you £4.07 (34.14%)   |  RRP £15.99

Introduced in "A Magnum for Schneider", the hour-long 1967 Armchair Theatre episode written by James Mitchell about a disillusioned British secret agent Callan (Edward Woodward), went on to offer four popular (if downbeat) series, a spin-off movie remaking the original story and a some-years-later wrap-up play "Wet Job". Remembered for its very distinctive opening titles, with a swinging broken light bulb and a memorable theme tune, the series adopted a Deighton-LeCarré approach to the grim, treacherous, grubby business of Cold War espionage and made a TV star of the intense Woodward as the sweaty, sometimes conscience-stricken, sometimes robotic Callan. Even in the 21st century this still seems a strong show, its complex stories and impressive performances outweighing a low-budget mix of video and film in the production that makes it seem less "professional" than other shows of the time. In a dramatic device that has long since fallen out of fashion in television, Callan episodes tend to wind up by leaving the audience to work out all the connections of the plot while Callan himself sits gloomily and ponders the wretchedness of his squalid world. --Kim Newman

When Ambition Meets Faith A brutal bloody and gripping saga of obsession corruption and poisonous greed; Paul Thomas Anderson's Award Winning There Will Be Blood is a masterly unwavering inspection of a consummately evil man whose trailblazing spirit is equalled only by his murderous ambition. In the dying years of the nineteenth century Daniel Plainview (Daniel Day-Lewis) a struggling silver miner realises that true wealth lies in oil extraction. Driven by a passionate hatred for others and an intense psychological need to see competitors fail he heads for the oil-rich land of California in a bid to manipulate and exploit the landowners of dust-worn Little Boston in to selling him their properties. Forefront of the town is self-styled 'faith healer' Eli Sunday (Paul Dano) who is structuring his own sinister plan to funnel the residents' impending wealth into his self-founded church. As Plainview's empire expands so does his obsession with the intrinsic value of power and he becomes increasingly irascible and paranoid along the way. What follows is a vindictive ruthless and violent chain of events as Plainview fails to deliver on promises as he pits himself against the town's perturbed and unstable charismatic teenage preacher. In addition to stunning visuals and an exceptional captivating score from accomplished composer (and Radiohead guitarist) Jonny Greenwood director Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia) owes his best work to date to the incredible Academy Award winning performance as Plainview by Daniel Day-Lewis and the staggering portrayal of Eli Sunday by Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine). Bearing similarities to Citizen Kane and Giant There Will Be Blood is an intelligent thought-provoking and powerfully-eccentric epic masterpiece that is as enchanting as it is timeless.
