The Best Of Smack The Pony | DVD | (21/01/2002)

| RRP Take the banal, the irrelevant and the downright silly, add a female perspective, pour in a hefty dose of comic timing, stir well, and what do you get? Two series of Smack the Pony, the highlights of which are found here. So many of the sketches are very short that watching this in one go might induce epilepsy, but regular doses, little and often, can only prove beneficial. The team of Sally Phillips, Doon MacKichan and Fiona Allen play on women's neuroses (snogging, pubic hair and size of boobs, not necessarily in that order), their preoccupations (finding a man, finding a man and finding a man), their weaknesses (Marks & Spencer, fashion and men) and their competitiveness (more covert than that of the male of the species, and therefore far more deadly). The spoof dating agency clips take in the full range of stereotypes and unfailingly hit the spot. And the prize for the most surreal sketch goes to the one which sets that most bourgeois of institutions--the wedding list--in a sex shop, with the coup de grace: "Two butt plugs ... with love from Kathy and Edward". Not a compilation to give your grannie for her birthday but to be enjoyed in the company of like-minded people (men included). On the DVD: The one failing here is that the DVD disappointingly adds nothing to the VHS format. Shame!--Harriet Smith
Romance Collection (How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Failure To Launch, Just Like Heaven, Forces of Nature) | DVD | (24/11/2008)
from £20.98
| Saving you £-0.99 (-5.00%)
| RRP How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (2003): Andie needs to prove she can dump a guy in 10 days. Ben needs to prove he can win a girl in 10 days. Now the clock is ticking-and the year's most wildly entertaining comedy smash is off and running in this irresistible tale of sex lies and outrageous romantic fireworks! Failure To Launch (2006): Matthew McConaughey is Tripp a 35 year old who still lives with his parents. And who can blame him? It's free he's got a great room and mom (Kathy Bates) does the laundry. Desperate to get him out of the house his parents hire a gorgeous woman Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) to give him a little...push. They just didn't expect Tripp would push back! Just Like Heaven (2005): When David (Mark Ruffalo) rented his quaint San Francisco apartment the last thing he expected - or wanted - was a roommate. He had only begun to make a complete mess of the place when a pretty but decidedly controlling young woman names Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) suddenly shows up adamantly insisting the apartment is hers. David assumes there's been a giant misunderstanding...until Elizabeth disappears as mysteriously as she appeared. Changing the locks does nothing to deter Elizabeth who begins to appear and disappear at will - mostly to rebuke David for his personal living habits in her apartment. Convinced she is a ghost David tries to help Elizabeth cross over to the 'other side'. But when Elizabeth discovers she does have a distinctly ethereal quality - she can walk through walls - she is equally convinced that she is somehow still alive and isn't crossing over anywhere. As Elizabeth and David search for the truth about who Elizabeth is and how she came to be in her present state their relationship deepens into love. Unfortunately they have very little time before their prospects for a future together permanently fade away. Forces Of Nature (1999): It's only two days before his wedding when Ben's (Ben Affleck) plane skids out of control leaving him stranded in New York with no way home to his nervous fianc''e in Savannah. Against his better judgment the reliable groom-to-be hitches a ride with free spirited traveler Sarah (Sandra Bullock) - setting off the year's most riotous road trip. At first these two opposites attract nothing but trouble in a sidesplitting series of comic mishap as and unnatural disasters. But an irresistible attraction and the forces of nature threaten to detour them forever in this sexy whirlwind adventure Jeffrey Lyons (WNBC-TV) declared a fun hip ride - one you'll never forget.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Complete Season 5 | DVD | (18/10/2004)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is about illusions and the truth that they often reveal; suddenly Buffy has a younger sister, has always had a younger sister. Michelle Trachtenberg as the moody, gawky Dawn achieves the considerable triumph of walking into an established stock company of well-known characters--Xander, Willow, Giles and so on--with the perfect assurance of a long-term member of the cast. Of course, nothing is as it seems; even Glory, the mad brain-sucking beauty in a red dress who is the villain of the year, turns out to be even more than she seems. Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy manages to convey heartbreak, self-involvement and real heroism as her relationship with her emotionally dense soldier boyfriend Riley hits the shoals and the blonde vampire Spike starts to show an altogether inappropriate interest. This season is also about the hard truth that there are some enemies it is impossible to fight. Even being around Buffy and Dawn is dangerous for their friends, as Glory and her minions proceed by a process of elimination. The eventual confrontation, when it comes, is genuinely shocking. Meanwhile, the vampire Spike's obsessed desire for Buffy takes them both to some very strange places and Willow and Tara have their love tested in the most gruelling of ways. And in the quietly upsetting episode "The Body", the cast produce their most impressive performances yet as they have to deal with another enemy they cannot fight. --Roz Kaveney

Sex and the City: Series 3 | DVD | (18/11/2002)
from £17.98
| Saving you £19.00 (118.82%)
| RRP The Sex and the City phenomenon continues in Series 3 of this outrageously addictive cult show. The four highly sexed thirtysomethings share their hopes, fears and even boyfriends (when Charlotte decides to throw a "used boyfriend party") in a New York where you can buy Manolo Blahniks on the proceeds of one article a week and eat mountains of junk food yet stay as thin as a pencil. But if the peripheral details remain somewhat fantastical, the searing honesty of the main storyline takes this third season to dramatic heights only suggested by the previous seasons. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) falls head-over-heels for chunky furniture designer Aidan Joff (John Corbett) but still embarks on a disastrous affair with her newlywed ex, Mr Big (Chris Noth). The resulting triangle, set against the background of Charlotte's outwardly perfect marriage to Trey (Kyle MacLachlan), proves to be electrifying viewing. But the humour is as sharp as ever too: Samantha's run-in with her drag-queen prostitute neighbours, Miranda pretending to be an air stewardess so as not to frighten men away and one of Charlotte's boyfriends talking dirty to her in bed are all moments of great high comedy. It just gets better and better. --Warwick Thompson

from £19.29

| RRP The sixth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer followed the logic of plot and character development into some gloomy places. The year begins with Buffy being raised from the dead by the friends who miss her, but who fail to understand that a sacrifice taken back is a sacrifice negated. Dragged out of what she believes to have been heavenly bliss, she finds herself "going through the motions" and entering into a relationship with the evil, besotted vampire Spike just to force her emotions. Willow becomes ever more caught up in the temptations of magic; Xander and Anya move towards marriage without ever discussing their reservations; Giles feels he is standing in the way of Buffy's adult independence; Dawn feels neglected. What none of them need is a menace that is, at this point, simply annoying--three high school contemporaries who have turned their hand to magical and high-tech villainy. Added to this is a hungry ghost, an invisibility ray, an amnesia spell and a song-and-dance demon (who acts as rationale for the incomparable musical episode "Once More, with Feeling"). This is a year in which chickens come home to roost: everything from the villainy of the three geeks to Xander's doubts about marriage come to a head, often--as in the case of the impressive wedding episode--through wildly dark humour. The estrangement of the characters from each other--a well-observed portrait of what happens to college pals in their early 20s--comes to a shocking head with the death of a major character and that death's apocalyptic consequences. The series ends on a consoling note which it has, by that point and in spite of imperfections, entirely earned. --Roz Kaveney
