Another pop band, another set of female celebrities, another fitness title, and this is all beginning to sound bland and forgettable. But The Girls from Liberty X--Toned is a cool surprise. With a beach location, a night setting, and club beats by Liberty X producers Gold Dust this dance-led workout has a lot going for it. Choreographer Kardy Laguda kicks straight into a funky warm up, while the three Liberty X girls concentrate on the moves rather than distracting with the usual inane celebrity comment. Dressed simply in trainers, shorts and tank tops, with hair pulled back (as it turns out to avoid going frizzy from the sea water splashes), they are perfect showcases for a workout that is more of a coordination challenge than a fitness marathon. The warm up builds up the sexy moves in preparation for the main workout. The pace ups significantly for the core session and, as Laguna throws in more and more moves and details, the non-dance literate could get lost. The final cool down is a chilled-out wind down with some good leg stretches. Whilst this isn't pitched at the serious fitness fanatic, it's certainly not one for the calorie counters lacking in body confidence. Enjoyable if you've got attitude. On the DVD: The Girls from Liberty X--Toned DVD features a behind-the-scenes extra that, in contrast to the cool, measured, funky night workout, reveals a down-to-earth working day. It's a chance to see the stunning Marbella location, the stage being built on the beach, and the girls taking the waves and the prospect of being soaked in their stride. You'll appreciate the workout more if you watch this first. --Lorna V

  • Transformers [DVD]Transformers | DVD | (19/06/2017) from £4.50   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

How do you like your blockbuster movies? If the answer’s loud, fast and full of big robots fighting, then you’re well and truly in luck. For director Michael Bay’s take on Transformers, based on the toys of the same name, delivers just that. And with some style. The film stars the fast-rising Shia LaBeouf (Disturbia) as Sam, who discovers that his first car has a little more to it when it transforms into an Autobot robot called Bumblebee. Fortunately, the Autobots are the good guys, and following not far behind are a good number more, headed up by Optimus Prime. Against them are the less friendly Decepticons, with Megatron at the helm, and the two sides are set for a frenetic battle right in the middle of Planet Earth. There’s a plot sitting underneath all of this, but it’s pretty much given with the Transformers movie that it’s just a vehicle to get the film from one set piece to another. And there’s little denying that the action sequences are spectacular. Boasting quite staggering special effects, the on-screen action moves with a pace and ferocity that sometimes makes it hard just to keep up with it all, as mighty robots engage is some quite staggering fights. It’s quite an achievement. Paving the way for an already-in-production sequel, Transformers has little pretensions about what it’s going to do, and is all the better for it. This is a film about big robots, big fights, big effects and, ultimately, big, dumb grin-inducing fun. What, really, is there not to like? --Jon Foster

Much as he loves his post-'Stones blues 'n' roots supergroup, the quiet bassist is content to remain just that in Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings, captured in the studios of the German TV music programme Ohne Filter--Musik Pur ("Unfiltered pure music"--snappy, or what?). The musicians give a good account of a selection from the band's recorded output; look out in particular for the excellent "Walking One and Only", "Anyway the Wind Blows" and the stonking workout at the end of the concert. BWRK includes Graham Bond, Gary Brooker, Georgie Fame, Albert Lee, Wyman's songwriting partner Terry Taylor plus various other players, all of whom clearly love what they're doing. Fame seems to be the frontman a lot of the time, a role which suits him, so it's too easy to forget that it's the little chap with the tiny hands somewhere behind him who's responsible for this classy little unit. On the DVD: Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings on disc offers standard TV 4:3 picture but a choice of sound formats (Dolby 5.1 or 2.0 and PCM Stereo) and has various extras including artist biographies, a self-congratulatory interview with the show's producer and a rather pompous account of the label's recording techniques. --Roger Thomas

It was in 1959 that ex-boxer and paratrooper turned screenwriter Rod Serling first opened the door to the "dimension of imagination" that is The Twilight Zone, a show quite unlike anything that had gone before, and better than much that has followed in its wake. This television series ran from 1959-1964 and it still looks fresh as ever, particularly on DVD. What distinguished the series (and still does) is the quality of the scripts, many of which were penned by Serling, but with significant contributions from veteran sci-fi authors and screenwriters such as Richard Matheson. Actors of the calibre of Robert Redford, Burgess Meredith, Lee Marvin and William Shatner gave some of their best small-screen performances, while an unforgettable main title theme by Bernard Herrmann and musical contributions from young turks such as Jerry Goldsmith underline the show's attraction for great creative talent both behind and in front of the cameras. There are four more selected episodes from the series on Volume 2. "Time Enough at Last" (episode 8) features Burgess Meredith in a heartbreaking role as the only survivor of nuclear holocaust whose dreams are (literally) shattered before his very eyes. "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" (episode 22) is Serling at his humanitarian best, issuing a plea against prejudice and intolerance and dissecting the mechanics of mob hysteria all in the space of a half-hour television show. "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (episode 123) is one of the Zone's most celebrated set pieces, featuring a pre-Star Trek William Shatner as the paranoid passenger who sees a gremlin on the plane's wing. Directed by Richard (Lethal Weapon) Donner from a script by Richard Matheson, this episode was one of those remade in the 1983 Twilight Zone film. There is more aircraft oddity in "The Odyssey of Flight 33" (episode 54), co-written by Serling with technical dialogue assistance from a TWA pilot, giving the crew's conversation the stamp of authenticity as they plunge back and then forward in time.On the DVD: A neat animated menu with a winking eye guides the viewer "Inside the Twilight Zone", which consists of digests of background information on the individual episodes, as well as a general history of the show, season-by-season breakdown and a potted biography of Serling. --Mark Walker

  • Jacknife [1989]Jacknife | DVD | (27/08/2001) from £14.45   |  Saving you £-8.46 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Made in 1989 and set 15 years after the end of the Vietnam War, Jacknife tells the story of alcoholic trucker Dave (Ed Harris) who lives with his sister Martha (Kathy Baker). Robert De Niro is Megs, Dave's ex-'Nam sidekick who re-enters his life on the promise of a fishing trip. Megs and Martha embark on a tentative courtship to the seething fury of Dave, who considers Megs "bad news". However, through wartime flashbacks it soon becomes clear that his hitting the bottle is a means of bottling up his feelings about Vietnam, Megs and their mutual buddy Bobby, killed in action. Ruminative and romantic, Jacknife slow-burns its predictable though satisfying way to its resolution, the three main players carrying the burdens of their roles with admirable restraint, especially Ed Harris, whose rage is internalised at the expense of his liver. There are echoes of The Deerhunter but this is not a film of that order or scale, as its low-budget synthesiser soundtrack signifies, feeling at times like a superior made-for-TV affair. On the DVD: A full-screen version with a ratio of 4:3. Neither sound nor picture quality are exactly a showcase for DVD technology, both being a little fuzzy, while the dubbing goes noticeably awry on 42 minutes. Special features are decidedly un-special: the original, lugubrious trailer plus "talent profiles" which are merely lists of the main players' previous films. --David Stubbs
