A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to Deep Impact, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may be the most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little girl won't realise that he's been struck blind. Deep Impact stars Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute

Leonardo (Franco Nero, The Day of the Owl) is a celebrated artist plagued by nightmares which stop him from completing his work. His agent and sometime lover, Flavia (Vanessa Redgrave, The Devils), encourages him to relax, so he buys a country villa. Once there he begins tracing the story of the previous owner while Flavia's presence in the house seems to awaken something as she encounters one mysterious accident after another. Part ghost story, part meditation on the creative process told through the excesses of the 1960s. Elio Petri (The Working Class Goes to Heaven) brilliantly fuses these ideas in ways that are at times shocking, yet thought-provoking in their investigation of art, sex and madness, set to an eerie score by Ennio Morricone.BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURESHigh-Definition digital transfer, presented with optional English and Italian audio tracksUncompressed mono PCM audioNew interview on the film by author Stephen ThrowerArchival interview with actor Franco NeroInterview with make-up artist Pierantonio MecacciSelect-scene commentary by critic and filmmaker Kat Ellinger on the theme of masculinity in the film and Petri's workTrailerNew and improved English subtitle translation for Italian audio and English SDH for English audio

The Little Polar Bear is a wonderfully sweet movie adaptation of the bestselling children's book by Dutch author and illustrator Hans de Beer. Lars--the bear of the title--lives in the North Pole with his father Mika, who warns him that he should not mix with any walruses. Unfortunately, Lars is already best friends with Robby. The two of them just can't understand what all the fuss is about, raising issues of tolerance and understanding to viewers of all ages. This isn't to say the film heavy-handedly throws messages at its young viewers. Subtle points made about society and environment are there to be interpreted, but it's the friendship tale that's at the heart of the movie. Along the pair encounter four hilariously depressed lemmings, the happy snow goose Pieps, Lena the Arctic hare, Caruso the singing penguin and the pretty bear Greta, to whom Lars finds himself curiously attracted. No violence. No pessimism. --Paul Tonks

Directed by Bafta award winner Pete Travis. One of the most influential British novels of the 20th Century, THE GO-BETWEEN is a story of forbidden love, Edwardian strictures, betrayal and tragic naivety. Told from the perspective of Leo Colston, a callow twelve year old middle class boy, the story starts when he is invited by upper class school friend Marcus Maudsley to stay at his elegant family home for the blazing hot summer of 1900. Leo is instantly enthralled by Marcus's family and most especially his beautiful and wilful older sister Marian. When Marcus is taken ill, Leo is left to his own devices, but finds himself alone and adrift in a world of alien social mores and adult concerns. Gauche and anxious to please, Leo is slowly and unwittingly drawn into a web of deceit as Marian pursues an illicit and passionate affair with tenant farmer Ted Burgess, a man of much inferior social position whom she can never marry. Marian and Ted befriend the lonely and easily influenced Leo and use him to carry secret messages between them. Leo quickly grows friendly with Ted and worships Marian with a mixture of innocent love and incipient sexuality he barely understands. Only when he meets Hugh Trimingham, the kind, but war wounded aristocrat to whom Marian is promised, does Leo start to question his role as intermediary. As Leo s thirteenth birthday approaches, Marian s moods fluctuate and the summer heat becomes more oppressive. Wholly unable to comprehend the true implications of the adult emotions seething around him, Leo sets in motion a chain of events that ultimately prove the catalyst for a shocking tragedy that will haunt him forever.

Bill Douglas’ beautiful film Comrades tells the epic story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, six Dorset labourers deported to Australia in the 1830s for forming a trade union. Unfolding in the pastoral haze of Dorset and the blinding light of Australia, Douglas has created a film rich with carefully layered visual illusions and nuances. With lovely, profound performances throughout, the story – a compelling account of struggle and injustice – becomes an epic tale about history, storytelling and the way we see our world. This three disc set from a director of singular vision – better known for his autobiographical Trilogy (My Childhood (1972), My Ain Folk (1973), My Way Home (1978) is presented in a new HD restoration on DVD and Blu-ray, with a wealth of special features.
