All nine series of the popular US sitcom about a beleaguered courier driver and his family. Doug and Carrie Heffernan are a young Queens couple who should be sitting pretty. Doug (Kevin James) is a courier driver with a cheeky, playful nature who, given a choice, almost always chooses what's most likely to rile his wife's fiery temper. Carrie (Leah Remini) is a legal assistant, vivacious, wise, and, on the face of it, way too good for Doug - a fact that informs much of the comedy here. In the first flush of their married life together, however, Carrie's parents' house burns down. Her mum dies, and dad Arthur needs a place to stay. Arthur (Jerry Stiller) is an oddball, hilariously volatile old man who never says anything that isn't in anger or indignation. An ensemble of Doug's quirky friends, who constantly dispense advice he takes to heart but which is utterly, disastrously wrong, round out the cast in this long-running family comedy.

The long-awaited DVD premiere of this influential science-fiction series which was first broadcast on BBC1 in early 1975. Well remembered for its unsettling depiction of a society in meltdown The Changes paved the way for the likes of Survivors and Day of the Triffids. When a strange noise is emitted from machinery and electricity pylons previously placid and easy-going folk turn violently against the technology that surrounds them - ruthlessly attacking radios TVs and other domestic appliances. In the devastating aftermath young Nicky Gore (Victoria Williams) is separated from her parents but finds a surrogate home with a group of Sikhs. But they soon are dubbed 'The Devil's Children' by superstitious locals and Nicky is accused of sorcery by a witchfinder. In grave danger she is forced to find a way to escape find her parents and uncover what caused the world to become so unbalanced. This highly acclaimed series was adapted from Peter Dickinson's best-selling trilogy by Anna Home (who would later become chief executive of the Children's Film and Television Foundation) and features music by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Paddy Kingsland (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy). Its gritty depiction of a near-apocalyptic world and its integration of Sikh characters make it as progressive and fascinating now as it was when it was first broadcast. The final season of The King of Queens sends this under-appreciated sitcom out with a bang. The season begins with several strong stand-alone episodes, including ones in which Doug (Kevin James) uses a tax refund to buy an ice cream truck; Carrie (Leah Remini) suspects that their best friends have managed to buy a vacation home by sponging off of her and Doug; Doug, after rescuing a chicken from being killed, becomes a vegetarian; Arthur (Jerry Stiller), eternally resplendent in argyle sweaters, asks Doug and Carrie for the money to get braces; and Adam Sandler (Punch Drunk Love) plays a high school friend of Doug's with a lot of repressed anger. But the season crescendos in a three-episode story that begins with Arthur preparing to get married again while Doug and Carrie's marriage crumbles when Carrie wants to move to an apartment in Manhattan. From there, the Heffernans' worst impulses run comically amok, demonstrating this show's long-standing strengths: The cheerful exploitation of all the character's bad behaviour, be it Doug's selfishness, Carrie's envy, or Arthur's raging egomania; snowballing storylines that routinely end in entertaining disaster and humiliation; and the skilfully-honed interplay of the three leads. The supporting cast--including Doug's best friend Deacon (Victor Williams), the emotionally enmeshed roommates Spence (Patton Oswalt) and Danny (Gary Valentine), and needy dog-walker Holly (Nicole Sullivan)--all have their moments, but James, Remini, and Stiller are the show's engine, and it runs like a Maserati. The Complete 9th Season lacks any extras, which is disappointing considering that it's also a short season of only 12 episodes; but the satisfying comic crunch of each episode makes this box set still a must-have for any fan of the show. --Bret Fetzer

  • The Square Peg [1958]The Square Peg | DVD | (05/11/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The Square Peg marks a slight departure for Norman Wisdom, being his first comedy to be set, however recently, in the past. He plays one of a pair of council workmen, who while repairing the road outside an army base come to illustrate the oxymoronic nature of the phrase "military intelligence". Finding themselves drafted, the workmen are sent to repair the roads ahead of the Allied advance through war-torn Europe by the sergeant they previously embarrassed. Norman finds himself behind the German lines, joins-up with French Resistance, gets captured then sets out to rescue British prisoners from a German military HQ by impersonating General Schreiber. Of course Wisdom plays Schreiber too, offering the sort of comedy stereotyping which Basil Fawlty in best "Don't mention the war" mode would appreciate. The Square Peg is the film which introduced Norman Wisdom's famous catch-phrase, "Mr. Grimsdale!" for whenever disaster struck. The long suffering Mr Grimsdale is played by Edward Chapman, who would reprise the role in Wisdom's A Stitch in Time (1963) and The Early Bird (1965), as well as playing Mr Philpots in The Bulldog Breed (1960). Hattie Jacques gets to sing a remarkable duet with Wisdom, and a pre-Goldfinger (1964) Honor Blackman provides the love interest.--Gary S. Dalkin
