Gregory Peck stars as a Scottish priest who is sent to work in China in this Oscar-nominated drama adapted from A.J. Cronin's novel by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Nunnally Johnson. Father Francis Chisholm (Peck), a young man struggling to find his way in life, is assigned the challenging task of setting up a Catholic church in a non-Christian Chinese community. In the process, the priest faces a number of difficulties including poverty, famine and civil war but over a number of years he gradually becomes closer to completing his mission.
