Wonders Of The Universe Professor Brian Cox is back with another mind-blowing exploration of the cosmos. This time he shows us our universe as we've never seen it before. With the most profound and elegant scientific ideas at its heart, Wonders Of The Universe reveals how the story of humanity is intimately entwined with the epic story of the universe. 13.7 billion years old, 93 billion light years across, more than 100 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars. This almost infinite, vast and complex universe has been the subject of human fascination and scientific exploration for thousands of years. The wonders of the universe might seem alien to us and impossible to understand, but Professor Brian Cox uses the evidence found in the natural world around us to explain its simple truths. Brian visits some of the most dramatic locations on the planet to explain the fundamental principles that underpin the laws of nature – light, gravity, matter and time. He shows us how the water of Victoria Falls in Zambia behaves exactly as light does around a black hole and how the same laws that govern our lives here on Earth apply across the entire universe. Using 3D CGI imagery, his expert knowledge and his infectious enthusiasm, Professor Cox shows us that by understanding the laws that govern the universe we end up answering the deepest question about our own existence; who we are? Where do we come from? And what will happen to us? Wonders Of The Solar System Professor Brian Cox takes another giant leap for humankind as images of distant alien worlds are brought into breathtaking focus. Giant ice fountains rising over 100km high; an ocean hidden beneath a frozen crust of ice; storms three times the size of Earth coloured blood red by a vortex of dust and gases; immense volcanoes that would put Mount Everest in the shade – this amazing DVD reveals the true and awesome beauty of our solar system. It's an epic journey of discovery, where bizarre worlds become real places we can see, feel and visit. Travelling from the Sun to the far-out reaches of Neptune, Wonders Of The Solar System has at its heart the latest scientific knowledge beamed back from the fleet of probes, rovers and telescopes currently in space. Using the very latest images sent direct from space, and spectacular CGI, the series presents a spellbinding voyage around the natural wonders of the solar system, capturing explosive phenomena in minute detail. Alongside these startlingly authentic images, some of the most spectacular, extreme locations on Earth help to reveal wonders never thought possible. Wonders Of The World explores how these previously unseen phenomena have dramatically expanded our horizons, revealing more about the planets, their moons and how they came to be the way they are. The series also looks at the big picture – how the forces of nature carved out beauty and order from the chaos of space; how our home planet doesn’t sit in magnificent isolation but is intimately connected with the rest of the Solar System; and how these connections have created the haven we call Earth.

Jean-Claude Van Damme, aka "the Muscles from Brussels", has sought to revitalise his flagging career by working with the most adrenalised directors from Hong Kong action films. His first such effort was this, the umpteenth remake of The Most Dangerous Game, which teamed him with Hong Kong's most fluid action poet, John Woo (director of M:I2). Woo does what he can but, as much magic as he injects into the action, he can't turn Van Damme into an actor. Still, this is above-average fare for the wooden Belgian, in which he plays a guy trying to bust a ring of hunters who pay for the right to track and kill human quarry. And Woo has the ever-reliable Lance Henriksen as the chief bad guy, always a plus. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Amid the cultural chaos of 1968 and armed with a budget of only $70,000, producer/director/cinematographer Russ Meyer transcended sexploitation by crafting this bosomacious melodrama (Time Magazine) about racism, communism, bush pilots, draft dodgers, and a ferociously free-spirited wife named Vixen (the incredible Erica Gavin of BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and CAGED HEAT). Despite attempts at censorship that included one of the first-ever X ratings and 23 separate U.S. prosecutions for obscenity, it became one of the year's top-grossing movies, forever transformed independent film, and remains the creative template for Meyer's unapologetic vision of American cinema. VIXEN! is now scanned in 4K from the original negative restored by The Museum of Modern Art with 3+ hours of new and archival Special Features curated by Severin Films in conjunction with The Russ Meyer Trust.

She acts like a female James Bond, vanquishing evil in the forms of robots and monsters. She also rewards, in an uninhibited manner, the handsome men who assist her in the adventure. What if we are living in a simulation, and the world as we know it is not real? To tackle this mind-bending idea, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Rodney Ascher (Sundance selections Room 237, The Nightmare) uses a noted speech from Philip K. Dick to dive down the rabbit hole of science, philosophy, and conspiracy theory. Leaving no stone unturned in exploring the unprovable, the film uses contemporary cultural touchstones like The Matrix, interviews with real people shrouded in digital avatars, and a wide array of voices, expert and amateur alike. If simulation theory is not science fiction but fact, and life is a video game being played by some unknowable entity, then who are we, really?

  • Benedetta [Blu-ray]Benedetta | Blu Ray | (29/08/2022) from £9.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

From renowned provocateur Paul Verhoeven (Elle, Basic Instinct), Benedetta is a subversive erotic drama based on the true story of a 17th century nun entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair. Virginie Efira stars as the titular Benedetta, a nun whose religious fervor begins to manifest in increasingly sensual and violent visions of Jesus. These hallucinations arouse the suspicions of Charlotte Rampling's shrewd abbess, Sister Felicita, whose distrust grows when a farm girl called Bartolomea (Daphné Patakia) enters the convent seeking refuge, and quickly develops an attraction to Benedetta. Premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Verhoeven's intoxicating latest is a transgressive and alluring look at faith, power and religion, and is every bit as scandalous as you would expect from the controversial filmmaker.
